[OC] Finished the cover. Now I just have to finish the book. 🥲
🎉 Welcome To The Archive!🎉
I made a gamebook! WOOO! 🥳
I posted about working on this a million years ago. Well, now it’s finally out! Or rather, it’s been out for a while, but self-promotion gives me hives, so I’ve put off making this post for way too long.
In the book, you will explore the titular Archive, a magical repository full of objects that have been destroyed in the real world. As you play, you will solve puzzles, avoid (or fail to avoid) dangers, and slowly uncover some of the events that led the player character to enter the Archive in the first place. It’s a CYOA style gamebook with some “Use thing A with location B to unlock story path C” mechanics layered on top. Each chapter has one true ending, but multiple paths that you can use to get there, and what you do on those paths can affect your options in later chapters. The mechanics will get a little more complicated as the story progresses, but they’re pretty straightforward for the first chapter. Chapter Two is tentatively set to come out around the end of July.

The deafening silence of online promotion.
Is anybody else struggling to find their audience online? I’ve had a little bit of luck with irl sales, and I’ve gotten overwhelmingly positive reactions from the people who have read my book, but I feel like I’m screaming into a void when I try to promote it online. I’ve been told it’s important to build an online following, but I’m not sure how best to go about it. I’m kinda shit at social media in general, to be honest. My book is also quite niche, which doesn’t help. It’s really best experienced as a physical object. So maybe I should just lean harder into selling at irl events and bookstores. Any advice is appreciated.
Are digital books worth it?
I’m in a somewhat unique position. My latest project is a sort of souped up choose your own adventure book at that needs to be formatted in a very specific way to be readable. This means a KDP version of the book would be difficult to impossible to make, and I’m not sure it’s worth the effort to try. I have a PDF version up on my Ko-fi for free (It’s the first in a series, and I’m trying to bring in new readers), but people don’t seem interested. So far It’s been easier to get people pay money for the physical book than read the digital version for FREE. It makes me wonder if it’s really worth it to put effort into putting out digital versions at all. I’m planning to put the PDF version up on itch.io. I think gamers might be more receptive to the PDF format. If don’t get any bites there, I might scrap the idea of digital versions all together, though.

He did not approve of the direction our D&D game was going.
I wish I’d known about r/BookCovers when I was designing this, but I didn’t, so here’s the finished product.
This cover is for the first installment of my series of interactive liminal space horror books. I know, not niche or difficult to market at all. 🥲 You can buy the physical book or download the free PDF version here: https://ko-fi.com/tintipping/shop
I’m finally promoting my very niche book here. Please tell me if I’m doing it right. Also, please download the book. It’s free.
So, I hate social media, and promoting my work makes me want to crawl out of my skin, but here we go.
The Archive Chapter One is an interactive horror novella in which you explore a sort of purgatory for destroyed objects called the Archive. You can buy the physical book or download the PDF version for free here: https://ko-fi.com/tintipping/shop#shareShopModal
It’s the first installment in a series that I plan to collect into one book once they’ve all been released. Chapter Two is on track to come out around early July.
I recommend The Archive if you enjoy playing narrative-focused horror games, have an appreciation of early horror and weird fiction writing, or if you just loved choose-your-own-adventure books as a kid and would like to see that experience recreated with adults in mind.
Thank you for reading this post. I’m having a hard time coming up with good book comps. Maybe Piranesi or A Short Stay in Hell? Please let me know if you think my description of the book is effective. I’d also appreciate any advice you have on self promotion and how to reach an audience.
