How Can We Improve our Steam Page

How Can We Improve our Steam Page

We made the Steam page for our first commercial release public about 2 months ago now, and so far things have been going alright, but we get the since there's quite a few improvements we could make.

We're already planning on updating the description images and the screenshots once we have more assets ready, but we didn't have much else planned besides an updated trailer down the line. We've been on the fence about updating the capsule art as well.

Is there anything else you think we should work on?

Faction Insignias for each of the 4 factions in our strategy game

We made some pretty neat looking iconography for the 4 playable factions in our game. From left to right here's a little about them:

  1. Colombian Liberation Front - The umbrella term for interdependent resistance forces operating in Colombia who are attempting to overthrow the puppet government and their Self Defense Force army established by the United Nations of Earth and regain independence. Despite their humble origins, they are the first to deploy Tyrant combat mechs thanks to the connections of their wealthy and influential backers. Their banner features the 2 headed Condor, arrows a shield, a crown, and a banner reading "In Defense of Liberty"

  2. The United Nations of Earth - A supranational entity claiming authority over the entirety of Earth and the Moon. Founded by the 20 remaining members of the UN in the 2070s, the UNE utilized advanced technologies brought back to Earth by interstellar research and engineering teams to renew their influence and transform from a dying global bureaucracy to a true nation-state with NATO forming the backbone of its military forces that would terrorize the world into submission. Slow to adapt after resting on their laurels, they are the last faction to produce Tyrants. Its insignia features a globe within a NATO star and an inscription referencing the ancient Greek phrase (Friendship is Equality).

  3. Confederation of Free States - A military alliance and later rival supra-nation union to the UNE. It is formed by the Colombian Liberation Front in cooperation with the Federation of Brazil with the express purpose of evicting the UNE from South America and any other territory that wishes to join them. They are the first faction to begin wide-scale mass production of Tyrants. Their insignia features a crest in royal purple, red, and gold colors, a lion, an eagle, a wreath, and a crown with the inscription "Gloria Semper Victori" (Glory to the Victorious).

  4. The Self Defense Forces are national level guard forces. Originally, many of them were the primary armed forces of their home country prior to joining the UNE, after which international military affairs were placed under the control of the Armed Forces of the United Nations. However, some SDF armies were previously backed by the UNE as proxies against their home countries' government, and after the UNE's victory they have been tasked with overseeing and suppressing local populations and resistance. The SDF lacks their own R&D for Tyrants and as such they are forced to adopt early prototypes or discarded auxiliary machines. Their insignia features a rifleman with "Defending the Homeland" written in a number of NATO languages.

After 30 days on Steam We've Reached Nearly 800 Wishlists

It's been a little over a month since our steam page went live for Tyrant Tactics and so far we've managed to hit almost 800 wishlists! It's not the fastest wishlist growth posted here, but we're pretty proud of how it's gone so far.

As for how we managed to get this far here's the TLDR;

  1. Social Marketing - We pick up some wishlists here and there from Twitter, Bluesky, etc. weekly posting. Nothing viral though. Posting to various subreddits and discords relevant to indie games and the game content/genre resulted in ~100 or so wishlists. These numbers are a bit harder to gauge

  2. Content Creators - We reached out to a few YouTube channels that cover Indie content. So far only Indie Game Hub reposted us, but resulted in roughly 200 wishlists.

  3. Media Outreach - The biggest spikes came from an article on NoisyPixel and one on Turn Based Lovers. These resulted in over 400 wishlists in a few days. (Side Note: I also noticed these sites are 2 media outlets that appear in the Google Newsfeed tab on Android devices which I believe contributed to our exposure)

We're excited to see how things will grow once our playtest is available :)

Just Updated Our Text Font for Tyrant Tactics

It's looking much more legible now :) Do you think the style matches the characters and the new UI well?

The Tyrants stomping infantry units makes more sense, but just swinging a 5 meter long sword is funnier. Which do you prefer?

Our Announcement Trailer was Share by an Indie News YouTube. Gamers Roasted us Immediately

So, coming up on 3 weeks ago now we made the steam page for our upcoming Advance Wars inspired tactics game live. To help push some early wishlist numbers up while we still had the steam boost, I reached out to a couple of Indie gaming YouTube channels I saw recommended on Reddit to see if they would cover our announcement and trailer.

The trailer wasn't particularly amazing just some 45-ish seconds of gameplay footage we put together from the most complete looking assets so that we had something for the steam page, but we figured it was good enough for an announcement trailer.

It's been a little over a week since that Channel posted the announcement trailer, and it's received over 3k views at this point. However, most of the comments are us getting torn up about the art style even though there's text near the end stating graphics are still in the alpha phase. It seemed like such a stark change in opinion from the feedback we received marketing in Discord and Reddit. Overall though we did still managed to capture around 120~ new wishlists from the experience.

Perhaps the lesson here is to be mindful of the audience who'll see your content cause while it seems like developers appreciated the overall vision of the game even in the current state, regular players couldn't really connect with the unfinished looking graphics as well.
