bloomberg.comAmmonia Gas Leak at the Southern Fertiliser Company in Basra Iraq (September 13, 2026) Two workers dead, up to 114 injured
On Sunday, September 13, 2026, an accidental ammonia gas leak occurred at the State Company of Southern Fertilizers in the Khor Al-Zubair industrial area of Basra Province, Iraq. Civil Defense teams — including a CBRN response unit — rescued 10 employees trapped inside the facility and recovered the bodies of two workers who died from severe gas exposure: one from the plant's precision-instruments department, the other from its compressor section. Both died in hospital despite resuscitation attempts.
The Ministry of Health reported the injury toll climbing through the day, ultimately reaching approximately 90-114 people.
Authorities confirmed the toxic plume extended beyond the facility boundary into nearby residential areas, affecting local residents alongside plant workers. The cause of the leak has not yet been determined. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19SnHjjMU3/
