Help me get to 100! “A Canadian Canon (or Counter Canon)”

It’s hard to define what makes something an ”important Canadian film” but I tried to come up with a list of 50 of the most important ones, including lots of outsider picks (I.e. Indigenous, queer, documentaries, animated shorts, etc.). My only rules were that they had to be Canadian productions and I could only include one film by any one director.

With the help of a bunch of redditors, I’m now at 70 films, so I’ve decided to aim for a list of 100 instead. Any suggestions of things to add?

I need help removing a couple films from this list

I made a list of 30 important Canadian films that I’ve seen, in order of how much I liked them. I couldn’t narrow it down to 30 though… I’m stuck at 32. I know it’s arbitrary and I could just make it a list of 32, but I like round numbers. Please help me decide which films to remove from this list.

I’m trying to remove ones that aren’t necessarily the worst on the list, but that aren’t “important Canadian films”… whatever that means. Thankyou!!

ETA: also, if you know of any other important Canadian films that you think ought to be on the list, let me know so I can check them out and maybe add them. (I’m trying to only include one film by any director though.)

TDSB surplussed teachers - OT list?

Have any TDSB surplussed teachers heard back about being added to the OT list? I submitted that form at the beginning of July and have emailed a bunch of people at People and Culture but haven’t heard anything. (I did get an email back from one guy telling me that I am not on the OT list currently. He gave me another email to try sending a message to but they didn’t get back to me.) With LTO postings coming out now, I was hoping we would have heard something…

My Favourite Film for Every Year of my Life

38 years, 38 favourites, and I’m noticing some patterns: lots of dark comedies, social satire, queerness, class anxiety, cringe, absurdity, and deeply uncomfortable people.

The actors who show up most are Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Poehler; the directors who recur are Paul Thomas Anderson, David Wain, and Ruben Östlund.

Analyzing this list, I realized I’m drawn to auteur films, and a weird number of these are about performance, identity, and people performing versions of themselves. I like both “give me 85 minutes of absolute insanity” and “give me 2½ hours to contemplate the collapse of Western civilization.” And I have a particular weakness for critically divisive cult comedies that everyone else seems to like considerably less than I do.

TLDR — I like movies that make me laugh and then quietly ruin my day.

Partial solar eclipses are boring

I got to experience a full solar eclipse a couple years ago and it was one of the most surreal things I’ve ever witnessed. The whole city went dark in the middle of the afternoon. And while the sun is completely covered, you can stare right at it and it’s not there… but there’s a glowing halo with wispy streaks of light surrounding where the sun‘s supposed to be.

Partial solar eclipses though are super boring and anticlimactic. You look through some dark glasses as part of the sun gets covered. Cool? The saddest part is how much people anticipate them, lining up for hours to get the glasses. What a let down.

Slang help?

I'm making a trivia game for my partner's family in the UK and one of the categories is new slang. Earlier, I asked advice on some sentences that use lots of Gen Z/Gen Alpha slang that my partner's family will have to interpret and rewrite in standard English. Lots of you shared some great suggestions and I'm thinking of doing these five:

  1. "She kept yapping during the game, got cooked, then started crashing out.”
  2. “The fact that they are shipping Ariana Grande & Gordon Ramsay has me sent.”
  3. “tuff fit twin”
  4. “Some chud got rejected by the huzz in class today. Major aura loss.”
  5. “The most NPC interaction of all time and somehow bro was shocked. Fork found in kitchen.”

What do you think? Any suggestions for how I can edit them to make them more authentic?

TDSB Board Surplus — How to apply for an LTO?

I was 1.0 perm at a secondary TDSB school but got board surplussed. I submitted that Google Form to be added to the supply list well before the deadline so I can hopefully apply for LTOs. However, I haven’t heard anything. Did anyone who was in the same boat hear back after submitting that form? Are we just automatically added to the supply list? And can we now apply for LTOs when the first round of postings goes up in August? (I believe they’re out on Aug 10th.) I wish that info session had been more helpful. :(

Thanks for any guidance or help! (I’ve heard there‘s a private FB group but I’m not on FB.)

Looks like I’m going to have to buy some Dr. Bronner’s soap!

They just posted this to their socials:

“In June, Israeli newspaper Haaretz published a searing commentary from former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, titled: “Israel is Conducting a Systematic Campaign of Ethnic Cleansing and Crimes Against Humanity in the West Bank.”

Regardless of your opinion of Olmert, his words should serve as a wake-up call — especially for those in the U.S. and Israel where many continue to deny the ongoing systemic and horrendous violence and displacement of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Since 2006, Dr. Bronner's has sourced about 90% of the olive oil in our castile soaps from Palestinian farmers in the West Bank through our fair trade and regenerative organic supplier, Canaan Palestine.

Dr. Nasser Abufarha is the founder of Canaan Palestine, a dear friend and business partner, and the subject of the powerful documentary, “Land of Canaan,” which follows Palestinian farmers in the West Bank and their ancestral relationship with the ancient olive trees they’ve tended for generations.

In support of the film, Dr. Bronner’s created a limited-edition soap label calling for peace in Palestine, available exclusively at select “Land of Canaan” screenings.

At a time when these communities face escalating violence and displacement, we hope more people will bear witness, engage in solidarity, and support those working to protect Palestinian lives and ancestral lands.

We call on all Jewish Americans and Israelis of conscience to acknowledge and confront the Jewish supremacy and lust for Palestinian land within Israel, and to not deny the reality of what lies at the center of Israeli power, politics, and policy.

We can look back to the Freedom Riders for inspiration—Black and white people, a quarter of whom were Jewish, united together against racism—who journeyed through the American South on buses and trains in the 1960s to help our country reckon with segregation and institutionalized white supremacy.”

How will my liberal Zionist family spin this one?

Just read that Israel bombed a funeral in Gaza, killing 7. My family claims to be against Netanyahu but whenever Israel bombs hospitals, schools, aid workers, journalists, etc., they blame Hamas. At a certain point though, the moral depravity of it all must be obvious. I’m trying to wrap my head around how they’re still pro-Israel at this point. Is their echo chamber so contained that they really believe Israel had to kill innocent civilians because Hamas forced their hand (human shields or misinformation or whatever they claim) or is it just that they can’t accept that Palestinians deserve the same human rights as Jewish Israelis? Or is there another way to understand things? It’s becoming harder and harder to believe that my family isn’t just racist. Anyone in a similar situation with insights that help you have some empathy for your Zionist family despite their lack of empathy for Palestinians? Or do I stop trying?

Are the rumours about Doug Ford true?

I keep hearing people blame Ford for the extreme wildfires this year. Is it true that he cut $42 million from the Ontario wildland firefighting budget? If so, why? Wouldn’t that be wildly unpopular, even with his base?

Looking for a Jewish, anti-Zionist illustrator for a “kids” book

I'm working on a kids picture book about Gaza, except I'm realizing it's not really a kids book. I still want to try to publish it as a kids book though... just probably not for a kid audience, haha.

I’m looking for someone who's part of the antizionist Jewish community who might want to illustrate something about a Jewish family coming to terms with what's happening in Palestine. I'd split the proceeds with the illustrator (50/50), or we could do it for a relevant charity. If you’re interested or know someone who might be, let me know and i can send you the latest draft.
