thoughts on my 16 day kayaking trip?

I have all my own gear. Is taking lessons the best way to explore new rivers as a beginner? It is my first season ww kayaking. I have already taken a handful of beginner/intermediate clinics with my local club but for sure could use more practice. instead of relying on local paddlers i figured taking lessons would be safer (although pricey..). im not expecting to paddle the entire ocoee or upper gualey. im okay with only class 3. the instructor for the ocoee sounded skeptical taking me there. they said based on my experience/progression they will decide where the lesson will be...but i still would like to paddle the ocoee .. are there easier sections of it? class2/3? ive taken 4 rolls classes w/ zoar and will work on rolling at the lessons, it's not reliable yet but im hoping to have a decent one by day 6

i know theres a few days spent only driving but i kinda hate driving more than 3 hours so i wanted to break it up a bit lol

Day 1

  • Start my drive to Poolsville Maryland

Day 2

  • calleva river store
  • gonna buy a half sliceeeee!!! 🤩

Day 3

  • Paddle the Potomac river and chutes with local guide hopefully
  • Start my drive to West Virginia

Day 4

  • Finish drive to West Virginia

Day 5

  • ACE adventure resort intermediate kayak lesson
  • Paddling the upper new river gorge and the gauley river

Day 6

  • LONG 5 hour drive from West Virginia to Ocoee Tennessee

Day 7

  • private ACE kayaking lesson
  • Hoping to have enough skill by now to convince the instructor to take me on the ococee lol

Day 8

  • LONG 5 hour drive from Tennessee to North Carolina

Day 9 and 10

  • White water kayak center! 😎

Day 11

  • Nantahala falls kayak lesson

Day 12

  • Start drive from North Carolina to Pennsylvania

Day 13

  • Finish drive from West Virginia to Pennsylvania

Day 14 S

  • Lower Yough private kayak lesson in Pennsylvania

Day 15 /Day 16

Conversation with older people...

I started a new hobby, white water kayaking. Its tons of fun and ive met people of all ages. One thing i noticed is when an older person (like 10 years older than me (im 31) asks me where im from and what i do for work they look uncomfortable when i ask them the same thing after my reply (i dont have a weird job or live somewhere strange either 😅)....whats up with that? Isn't that how small talk works? It's like they don't expect me to ask them the same thing? when i don't inquire about their life i feel self centered but the conversation goes much smoother...

Trip to Calleva River store

I set an appointment for the shop on 8/26, ill be driving 6 hours from upstate NY. What can I do near by for the next few days to make the long trip down there worth it? I was hoping to take lessons with the Calleva river school but theres nothing that falls around the dates after 8/26...i'll be in Poolesville, MD so anything 1-2ish hours from there would be ideal. anything white water related, a chance to paddle any popular rivers in that area is what i'd like to do with some sort of guide or instructor/lessons i'd like to check out something class 3 and for learning intermediates.

Light weight creekboat/river runner?

feels like im going to throw my back out carrying my LL RMX 76, what are some light weight option i can check out? i know halfslices would be lightest but i rather paddle a creeker/river runner. im 5'5" 125lbs size small in most boats...i was thinking about the jackson flow, are there any other kayaks i should look into?

Need Outfitting help

On my last paddle I noticed my heels got a bit sore. My Antix 1.0 is a pretty tight fit for me, I can only wear socks in it. Is there any reason I shouldn’t glue some foam on the bottom for my heels to sit? I don’t plan to readjust the foot block, it’s already pushed all the way to top and I’ll never need the bow for storage. Just thought I’d ask cause I couldn’t find any example or similar situations online.

Will a Werner DD with 45 degree feather give me trouble as a new paddler?

found a good deal on a werner double diamond bent shaft paddle in a fitting length but it has a 45degree feather. i have a play boat and river runner i want to use the paddle with both until i get my river running paddle fixed. im a new paddler and was previously paddling with a 2pc aquabound aerial with adjustable feather. i played with it a bit when i had it, setting it to 30-45 degrees..but mostly used it set to zero feather cause i was still working on proper stroke techniques...

going from 80mg to 60mg or 40mg?

i no longer have insurance and have around a 90 day supply of 40mg left and around 60 days supply of 20mg. any one go all the way down to 40mg from 80mg? how was it? this would allow me to make it last the longest.

Which 2pc bent shaft paddle should i get?

I was using an aqua bound aerial 2 pc bent shaft and really liked it. love the feather adjustability. need to send it in to get repaired and in the meantime would like to buy another paddle. something carbon that is a bit lighter than the FG. Would like to try a different brand from aqua bound too. this paddle will be for river running only up to class 3. no plans for big water anytime soon but maybe one day. order of importance to me: weight>durability>easy to roll with

Aquabound aerial 2pc paddle snapped on half 😬

I understand this damage is NOT covered under warranty but can I buy just one half of the paddle to replace it? I plan to give aquabound a call later today and I already sent an email but was curious if anyone here was able to do this? It snapped around/middle of the extension part so the side with the lock is totally fine.

is it okay to paddle without foam on the foot blocks?

the fit is much better without them. yesterday i demoed an antix 3.0 (not pictured) from a shop and they didn't have foam on the foot blocks and it was fine, i understand that if youre sitting in your boat for a few hours it may be uncomfortable but is there any other reason to have them if your feet still feels snug in a good locked in position without foam?

Is a JK Rockstar V too similar to a versus hellbender?

Can I justify having both of these in my quiver? I got the hellbender because I want to learn how to surf. I found a rockstar V at such a good price that I’m thinking of buying it but I have no interest in Ariel tricks…I would like to make class 2 and 3 rapids more
Challenging and fun but wouldnt a half slice be better for that? Would a rockstar be good for just downriver play and maybe some surfing or could my full slice handle downriver stuff too? Playboat vs full slice?

What exactly is this and how can I replace it?

The rubber seal has been pealing and breaking over the last few years. Is this keeping water out of something important?
