Kale is the best vegetable

Kale is hearty and easy to grow. It can be eaten raw or cooked. You can sautée it with some garlic and olive oil in just a couple minutes and it’s delicious! I also add it to soups and a lot of sauces, where it completely takes on all the other flavors.

I really can’t stand audiobooks with sound effects

I just returned a book to Libby after hearing a creaking door and footsteps in the snow. I don’t know why sound effects bother me so much, but they do.

Edited for typo

Freedom by Jonathan Franzen 2010 — Disturbing quote

Sorry, I listened to the audiobook, so no image. No one in this book is likable, but women are particularly egregious. They are written as emotionally damaged and passive as compared to the psychologically damaged men. The women are needy, and basically disappear without men to prop them up. The women are mostly needy, and on more than one occasion actually beg (no exaggeration) a man for sex or attention. Here’s a sample of a phone sex session between two teens:

“One afternoon, as Connie described it, her excited clitoris grew to be eight inches long, a protruding pencil or tenderness with which she parted the lips of his penis and drove herself down to the shaft…Another day, Joey described to her the sleek warm neatness of her turds as they slid from her anus and fell into his open mouth”

I will leave you to shower and gargle with a gallon of mouthwash now.

Incels want Lindsay Clancy to be let off scot free

It’s not about the children. Just like with abortion rights, it was never about the children. It’s about them making it look like women are evil and have no accountability.

The fact is, she won’t get off scot free. If the jury finds her not guilty, she’ll be locked up inside a mental institution.

Being committed to a mental institution for life is not getting away with murder

The verdict is still out in the Lindsay Clancy trial, but Redditors are acting like she will get away with murder, and that women are cheering for that outcome.

Acquittal isn’t even on the table. If the jury finds her not guilty for lack of criminal responsibility, she will spend the rest of her life in a psychiatric institution. That’s not getting away with murder.

People who become obsessed with their Myers-Briggs type

Myers-Briggs is a fun personality quiz, but its everyday use is scientifically questionable. Still, I see people here on Reddit defining themselves by their types the way some define themselves by their astrological signs. Can an ENFP date an INTJ? What kind of birthday gift should I give an IIFJ?

At best, the Myers-Briggs type is like viewing an outline of a person. Lived experiences fill in the rest. At worst, it's used to justify workplace discrimination.

Myers-Briggs is not who you are. There are way more than 16 types of people. Hell, even astrology acknowledges that once you get past just sun signs. Stop making your Myers-Briggs type your entire personality.

When The Traditional Breadwinner Role Starts To Flip

Stay-at-home dads and husbands are becoming increasingly common in the US, partly due to changes in the job market, where women now hold slightly more payroll positions than men. Pew Research reports that men represent around 18% of stay-at-home parents, nearly twice the percentage seen about 30 years ago.

Looking for new authors

I am a white woman who reads a lot and want to get out of my British mystery/suspense rut. That’s not entirely fair. I go through periods of attempting to expand my reading horizons. I read James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and Colson Whitehead, all of whom are (or were) brilliant storytellers. Of course, I’ve read other Black authors, but not surprisingly, those are the ones who have really resonated with me.

I would love to hear more recommendations.

When people say “the poorest American is better off than most of the world”

First off, this is blatantly untrue. The poorest Americans have no homes, limited access to food and healthcare, limited access to basic hygiene, etc. Sure, much of the world lives in dire poverty, but so do many Americans.

Beyond that, people use this race to the bottom statement to rationalize the massive wealth disparity in the US, as if it’s no big deal. It is a big deal. It used to be that parents could expect their children to be better off than they were. No more. Jobs are getting scarcer, homes more expensive, higher education is becoming out of reach, K-12 education is getting worse, and the best politicians want to do is cut the taxes that are being used to help people.

I hate the way women’s voices are stereotyped and nitpicked

I listen to a lot of audiobooks. My favorites are generally narrated by women, but if the r/audioboook sub is any indication, I am part of a tiny minority.

Not only are the most popular books in the sub narrated by men, but female narrators get a lot of hate. They are hated for having lilting voice. They are hated for the opposite, a vocal fry, in which the voice drops and becomes gravelly at the end of a sentence, like men’s often do.

Just another example of women never being able to win.

WARNING: This book may be triggering

The main character is a self proclaimed nice guy, but is anything but. Yes, it’s a thriller, but it’s also an insight into how these types of men control women.
