First timer question.

41/M Just received my first pair of readers. Never wore glasses before. +1.25 is the prescription.

Question: with the glasses on and looking at something close up (Book, Phone etc) everything seems clear, large and legible. However anything outside of that focus area (peripheral, things in the distance) seem disorienting.

For example, if I’m reading a book everything is fine, but as soon as I look up to talk to my wife across the room it feels disorientating.

Is this normal with readers or should I have my prescription adjusted.

Thanks for the help.

Want to share a negative experience with AAdvantage Hotels.

I wanted to share a recent negative experience I had with Advantage Hotels / AA Hotels as a cautionary tale for anyone booking through a third party travel portal.

I booked a week long stay at an Iberostar resort in Mexico through AA Hotels and received a confirmation email that included both an AA booking ID and a hotel confirmation number. Everything appeared legitimate, so I assumed the reservation was fully confirmed.

However, when I arrived at the resort in Mexico, I was told they had no record of my reservation in their system.

I immediately contacted AA Hotels customer service. After waiting on hold for 20 to 30 minutes, I was told it would take up to 24 hours to resolve the issue, essentially leaving me stranded without accommodations. Fortunately, the resort still had availability and allowed me to book a room directly with them. They also offered to refund that direct booking if the AA reservation was eventually sorted out.

Unfortunately, booking directly with the resort cost significantly more than the rate I originally secured through AA Hotels.

Over the next four days, I repeatedly contacted AA Hotels. Each time involved another long hold followed by vague responses about the issue being “escalated.” It felt like customer service representatives were simply following a script rather than actively resolving the problem.

Then, without any real discussion or attempt to make things right, I received an email stating that the reservation had been canceled and refunded. To their credit, they did refund my original payment, but that still left me paying the much higher resort rate out of pocket, and I also lost out on the loyalty points I expected to earn from the booking.

I’ve used AA Hotels many times in the past without issues, but this experience taught me an important lesson. Always contact the hotel directly before your trip to confirm they actually have your reservation in their system. And if something does go wrong, don’t expect much help from AA Hotels customer service.
