[Guide] How to Make the Decky Ludusavi Plugin Actually Auto-Backup Non-Steam Games

If you use the Decky Ludusavi plugin for automatic save backups on your Steam Deck, you've probably noticed it works out of the box for official Steam games, but silently fails for non-Steam shortcuts and repacks.

Here is how to set up Ludusavi end-to-end so your non-Steam saves auto-backup every time you exit a game.

1. Install Ludusavi in Desktop Mode

  • Switch to Desktop Mode on your Steam Deck.
  • Open the Discover Software Center, search for Ludusavi, and click Install (Flatpak ID: com.github.mtkennerly.ludasavi). Alternatively, grab the latest Linux release directly from the official Ludusavi GitHub repository.
  • Launch Ludusavi once from your applications menu so it creates its base config directory and backup folder (/home/deck/ludusavi-backup).
  • (Optional) Under the OTHER tab in Ludusavi, you can link Rclone to Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox if you want cloud offloading.

2. Add the Non-Steam Game Entry

Because non-Steam games don't have automatic cloud hooks, you must tell Ludusavi where the prefix saves live:

  • In Ludusavi, click the CUSTOM GAMES tab > Add game.
  • Set Integration to Override manifest.
  • Under Paths, click the + button and paste or browse to your game's Wine save directory. This is typically located inside the game's compatdata folder:/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/<APP_ID>/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/<Game_Name>/...
  • Click the folder checkmark to save the path, switch to the BACKUP MODE tab, and hit Preview to verify Ludusavi discovers your .dat or .sav files.

3. The Crucial Gotcha: Strict Case Sensitivity

When you close a game, Decky executes the CLI behind the scenes:

flatpak run com.github.mtkennerly.ludasavi backup --force "<Game Name>" --api

Ludusavi CLI is 100% case-sensitive. If your Steam shortcut is named Death Stranding 2 (Title Case) but you typed death stranding 2 (all lowercase) in Ludusavi's Custom Games tab, Ludusavi will throw an "unknownGames" error and abort the backup without alerting you.

You have two ways to solve this:

  • Option A (Match the Names Exactly): Ensure the title in Ludusavi's Custom Games tab matches your Steam library shortcut name character-for-character and case-for-case.
  • Option B (Use Decky Custom Game Alias): If your Steam shortcut is an executable name (e.g., DS2.exe) or has different capitalization than your Ludusavi entry:
    1. Return to Gaming Mode.
    2. Open the ... (Quick Access Menu) > Decky Ludusavi.
    3. Select your game from the dropdown.
    4. Click Set Custom Game Alias and type the exact string used in Ludusavi's Custom Games tab.

4. Required Settings in the Decky Plugin

In Gaming Mode, open the Quick Access menu (...) > Decky Ludusavi:

  • Under GAME CONFIG (Select your non-Steam game first):
    • Sync after closing game: ON (Crucial: triggers the auto-backup when you quit).
  • Under GLOBAL CONFIG:
    • Auto-Sync Feature Enabled: ON.
    • Auto-Sync Notifications: ON (Displays an on-screen Deck notification whenever a backup finishes).
    • Auto-Sync New Games: ON.

5. Verification & Cleaning Ghost Entries

  • Verify in Plugin Logs: Launch your non-Steam game, play for a moment to trigger a save, and exit. Open Decky Ludusavi > Plugin Logs. You should see: JSON"decision": "Processed", "change": "New" (or "Same") If you see "errors": {"unknownGames": [...] }, your casing or custom alias does not match.
  • Cleaning Up Ghost / Uninstalled Entries: If you rename a game or uninstall one, Decky will often keep orphaned titles in the dropdown. To wipe them, switch to Desktop Mode, open /home/deck/homebrew/settings/decky-ludusavi/settings.json in a text editor (enable hidden files with Ctrl+H), and delete the leftover blocks under "games".

Disclaimer : researched with Ai and then Summarized once i validated it working successfully on my deck

Fix for Death Stranding 2 (FitGirl Repack v1.0.43.0) on Steam Deck: Eliminating the 100% CPU Spinlock getting ~35–40 FPS

If you are running the FitGirl repack of Death Stranding 2 (v1.0.43.0) on the Steam Deck, the game suffers from severe engine-level stalls out of the box.

The Issues

  • 100% CPU Spinlock: The Decima engine worker threads aggressively poll in a tight spinlock on Linux, pinning all 8 threads at 100% (pulling 9.5W–10W) and starving the GPU down to ~400–600 MHz (0.5W–1W).
  • Hard 20 FPS Lock: Decima’s internal multi-buffered V-Sync snaps to sub-divisors of the 60 Hz screen, flatlining the frametime graph at 50.8 ms.
  • Thermal & Fan Noise: APU runs at 82°C+ with fans pinned at an unbearable 6200+ RPM.

Tools Needed

  • Decky Loader: Needed to install and run plugins.
  • PowerTools (Decky Plugin): To manually balance the shared APU power rail between CPU and GPU.
  • Deck FrameGen / fgmod (OptiScaler): Located in ~/fgmod/fgmod to inject FSR 4.1.1 Frame Generation and upscale reconstruction.

The Launch String & Why We Ditched PROTON_LOG=1

Initially, turning on PROTON_LOG=1 fixed the CPU usage. This wasn't because of the log content—writing every Wine event creates a micro-delay (synchronous I/O yield) that physically breaks Decima's thread spinlock.

However, PROTON_LOG=1 dumps massive text files directly to your SSD, easily eating 12+ GB in a single session and crashing once storage fills up. Setting PROTON_LOG_DIR=/dev/null fails to boot because Proton expects a directory, not a character device.

The permanent fix is triggering Wine's debug thread timestamps while discarding standard output and error directly into /dev/null via a bash subshell. This gives you the exact same thread-yielding delay with zero bytes written to disk or RAM.

Paste this into your Steam Launch Options:

WINEDEBUG=+tid,+timestamp SteamDeck=1 http_proxy=http://127.0.0.1:0 https_proxy=http://127.0.0.1:0 ~/fgmod/fgmod bash -c 'exec "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1' -- %command%

(Note: If OptiScaler does not expose upscaler options in-game, change SteamDeck=1 to SteamDeck=0*).*

Required Settings

  1. SteamOS Performance Menu (**... Quick Access Button)
  • Disable Frame Limit: ON (Crucial: breaks the 20 FPS lock).
  • Allow Tearing: ON.

2. PowerTools Settings

  • SMT: ON (8 Threads).
  • Advanced (per-thread configuration): OFF (ensures clock caps apply across all cores).
  • CPU Frequency Limits: ON Maximum: 2700 MHz.
  • CPU Governor: performance.
  • GPU Frequency Limits: ON Minimum: 1300 MHz, Maximum: 1600 MHz.
  • PowerPlay Limits: OFF.

3. In-Game & OptiScaler Settings

  • Graphics Preset: Portable / Low.
  • In-Game V-Sync: OFF.
  • Upscale Method: FSR Balanced (4 1.1 via optiscaler).
  • Frame Generation: XeSS Frame Generation x2 (in-game option).

The Result

CPU power drops from 10W to ~5.4W (84% load), the GPU holds a steady 1300 MHz (4.5W), temperatures drop to ~77°C, fan noise calms down under 4500 RPM, and framerates jump from an unplayable 20 FPS to a rock-solid 35–40 FPS baseline with no storage bloat.

disclaimer : this post is researched with AI but it's a real problem i solved with AI help , constantly tweaking the settings back and forth and then i asked AI to summarize all my research , hope this helps someone

Where do I find datasets to train my own model ?

If today I want to train my own model / fine tune an existing one , where do I find the massive datasets that these large corps have used to train their models ? I'm trying to understand if those datasets were just meant for corporations or are there high sailing noblemen who are trying to ensure that peasants like us can still achieve somethin similar ?

I built a free API to detect Hinglish toxicity and abuse

Dealing with moderation in Indian communities is a nightmare because standard models fail at Hinglish (Romanized Hindi-English). Standard regex filters and Automod scripts can only catch so much before users just bypass them with creative slang.

To solve this, I fine-tuned a ModernBERT encoder (jhu-clsp/mmBERT-base) on ~245,000 comments from various Indian subreddits. It does multi-label classification across 7 categories: Profanity, Targeted Harassment, Hate Speech, Caste, Communal, Xenophobia, and Misogyny.

I’ve deployed it on Hugging Face Spaces using the free ZeroGPU tier. You can test it via the web UI here:https://huggingface.co/spaces/darelphilip/darel_Hinglish_toxicity_mmbert

You can also hit it directly as an API for free to test in your own bots or workflows:

Python:

from gradio_client import Client

client = Client("darelphilip/darel_Hinglish_toxicity_mmbert")

result = client.predict(

raw_text="kya bakwaas chal raha hai yahan",

threshold=0.50,

api_name="/predict"

)

print(result)

Standard REST:

curl -X POST https://darelphilip-darel-hinglish-toxicity-mmbert.hf.space/call/predict \

-H "Content-Type: application/json" \

-d '{"data": ["bhai tu pagal hai kya", 0.50]}'

Note: It runs on a free tier, so if the GPU is asleep, the first request might take ~10 seconds to cold start, but subsequent requests will be fast.

Would love for you guys to stress test it with some regional slang and let me know where it breaks! The model card and weights are open-source on my Hugging Face profile.

Built my first ML model to solve a real moderation problem (Hinglish Toxicity Classifier) looking forfeedback & advice!

As someone from a non-coding background, I’ve been trying to wrap my head around how modern NLP, fine-tuning, and model evaluation actually work .

Being a Reddit moderator, I kept running into a very specific headache: Romanized Hinglish (Hindi written in English script) toxicity constantly slips through standard platform filters and basic regex.

To see if I could build a practical tool for this use case while learning, I fine-tuned an XLM-RoBERTa encoder model on 116k+ labeled Romanized Hinglish comments for multi-label classification (toxicity, profanity, identity attacks, harassment).

You can test out the live deployment or inspect the model here:

Interactive Web Demo:

https://huggingface.co/spaces/darelphilip/hinglish\\\_toxicity

Model Card & Weights:

https://huggingface.co/darelphilip/hinglish-toxicity-classifier

What I’d love feedback on:

Stress-testing edge cases: Try throwing regional slang, passive-aggressive sarcasm (e.g., masking slurs with affectionate words), and weird phonetic spellings at it to see where it breaks.

Handling class imbalances & thresholds: Because rare, severe identity slurs appear far less often than casual swear words, the model currently struggles with mixed-intent sarcasm when using a static 0.5 sigmoid threshold. Would love advice on per-label threshold calibration, loss function tweaks (like Focal Loss), or hybrid architecture ideas.

Model architecture suggestions: Is an encoder-only approach hitting a hard ceiling here, or is pivoting to a compact decoder LLM (like Sarvam-1 or Qwen 2.5 1.5B/3B) the standard path for code-mixed nuanced moderation?

Also, if anyone here is from a non-tech/non-coding background and curious about how to get started with open-source datasets, Google Colab GPU training, and deploying on Hugging Face, feel free to ask in the comments or DM ,happy to share the exact workflow, free tools, and mistakes I made along the way.

Looking forward to your thoughts and constructive critiques!
