Successful Polish private farmer, 1980

Agriculture was never collectivized in communist Poland, so private farms could exist. Those lucky enough to have fertile soil and good market connections could earn very good money through hard work and smart investment decisions. This farmer owns a house, a car, a dishwasher, and a color TV, and could even afford vacations in Hungary.

Why did societies in North America and Africa not progress technologically like Europe or Asia before the 1400s?

For example, why did technologies not spread north from the Aztecs, or why did inventions from the Muslim world not spread deep into Africa?

Coca-Cola, fast food, and sugary drinks have been easily accessible since the 1960s, if not earlier, yet skyrocketing obesity rates—especially among children—are a recent phenomenon. Why is that?

Faraon (1965), first Polish film on BD4K

Watching this classic film again is an outstanding experience. The colors are rich and the details are sharp—I can relive Ancient Egypt by admiring the intricate jewelry, the texture of the sand, and the sweat on the actors' faces. Mind-blowing. I hope more Polish classics get digitally restored and rescanned in 4K! Lack of HDR does not take away from the overall good experience.

Unfortunately, I can't take screenshots on my PS5, but I found some links from someone else:

18-year old murdered protester during 1970 Protests in Poland

The protests were sparked by a sudden increase in the prices of food and other everyday items while already low wages remained stagnant. Strikes were put down by the Polish People's Army and the Citizen's Militia(Communist Police), resulting in at least 44 people killed and more than 1,000 wounded.

"Star Wars" film poster, Poland 1979

Poland was one of the first communist countries to officially release Star Wars in March 1979, followed closely by Hungary in August of the same year. Most other Eastern Bloc nations had to wait until the late 1980s or even 1990 to see the movie in theaters. This delayed rollout highlighted the shifting landscape of cultural influences behind the Iron Curtain.
