What is dark humor, really ?
I've been thinking about this for a while.
A lot of people use "it's just dark humor" to defend almost anything they say, but what actually makes a joke dark?
Is dark humor supposed to:
- expose an uncomfortable truth or hypocrisy?
- be a coping mechanism for difficult experiences?
- satirize harmful beliefs or absurd situations?
- intentionally normalize taboo ideas?
- or is it sometimes just repeating offensive opinions and hiding behind the label of "dark humor"?
Another thing I'm curious about is the target of the joke.
When people laugh at dark humor, are they laughing at the mindset being portrayed, or are they laughing with it? In other words, is the joke criticizing the idea, or reinforcing it?
Where do you personally draw the line between clever dark humor, satire, shock humor, and simply using "it's a joke" as an excuse to say something offensive?
Interested to hear different perspectives.
