Sibling School Applications

Hi - I'm in the process of sorting out my second child's school application. We're relatively far from our eldest's school's catchment area, although not unreasonably, and we're a little concerned that the youngest won't get in for whatever reason.

Can anyone offer any advice? Should we list backup schools or just the one? Does anyone know of instances where siblings haven't gotten into the same school?

Part of our concern stems from the fact that our eldest didn't get into the school originally and did reception at a closer school, then moved in Year 1.

I finally watched Mando Vs Groglet and wanted to give my thoughts before listening to James & Mason's review

So first off, spoilers ahead.

I thought it was pretty disappointing to be honest. It felt like they took a 5-episode season of the show and turned it into a film. Sort of like Serenity, except worse.

Groglet was the main thing that saved the film. The scenes of him >!suiting up to go rescue Mando, and then later taking care of him!< we're easily the best parts. I also liked Rotta as a new character.

But ultimately, the whole thing felt bland and fan-servicey. Even the music was mediocre. The writing just felt lazy, like the >!dude in the swamp who just helps Groglet for no reason.!< There was no real character development either.

I think if this had been a few episodes of the show, I would have liked it. But as a film, it felt like it was a bunch of filler strung together.

I'm giving it a Just A Movie.

Looking for a case with a cylinder instead of a triangle

I just got the Redmi Pad 2 and love it, but I really don't find the case comfortable to hold when folded into the triangle/prism shape. Does anyone know of similar cases where the shape is more cylindrical?

How do you promote your app on Reddit?

I'm talking about aside from blatant "hey, I built this and you should try it" type posts. What strategies do you use? Any communities you recommend?

I made my own TV tracker after wasting my lunch break hunting for a show across three streaming apps

It all started when I was sitting on my Peloton, trying to decide which TV show to watch during my workout. I could only watch Netflix or Disney+ on the bike, because those are the only streaming services it supports. So first I went to my Disney+ wishlist, then my Netflix queue, and I'd wasted about 10 minutes of my lunch break before I realised the show I actually wanted to watch was on Amazon!

I was so sick of having all the shows I wanted to watch strewn across different platforms and apps, and the trackers I tried were all built around one type of media, not everything I actually watch/read.

So over the last few weeks, I built my own!

The core idea: one wishlist, no matter where something's streaming. It pulls in JustWatch data, so when I add a show I actually know which service has it instead of guessing or opening five apps to check.

It also tracks progress (watching, finished, dropped), and I ended up adding support for other media too (books, films, podcasts, comics) since I wanted the same "one place" logic for everything, not just TV.

The part I didn't expect: once I'd logged a few months of shows, I could actually see which streaming services I use and like the most vs. the ones I'm basically paying for and ignoring. Genuinely useful for deciding what to cancel.

It's free, no ads, no account needed, and everything stays on your device (no server storing your watch history). Built it solo as my first published app — happy to answer any questions about it, and would love feedback if any fellow show-hoarders want to try it out!

I feel like Jekyll and Hyde

I've had a long history with ADHD and meds. I was diagnosed over 30 years ago and started ritalin around 25 years ago. I eventually started Concerta in my teens, getting as high as 54mg.

After about 5 years, I started having chest pains and switched to short acting ritalin, which has been my routine for about 15 years now.

I've been having really bad drop off symptoms with the short acting, so I'm now on week 4 of returning to Concerta. I'm currently on 36 after 1 week of 18.

I feel great during the day while I'm on it, but the moment it wears off it's like a side effect crap shoot. Irritability, mood swings, headaches/vertigo, chest pains (but now only when off the meds).

I've been trying to get in touch with my doctor, but they basically said to give it more time and I'm not sure if I can. They said eating something high protein can help the drop off, but honestly I don't notice much of a difference.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any tips to help smooth the drop off?

For reference, I'm 39M around 86kg and taking 36mg around 7-8am.

James' Rant This Week

James' rant about YouTube this week is one of the reasons I am a Big Sandwich subscriber, and the reason I do similar things for other creators I like. It's just so messed up that a corporation could tweak their algorithm or whatever and suddenly it has this huge impact on someone's income.

How do I see the date I finished an audiobook?

I'm building a new tracking app to record all the media I consume, including audiobooks. I'm trying to find a way to get all my data for the finish dates for all the audiobooks I've listened to. Does anyone know how to do this?

New detail on my Nth watch

I've watched the OG series at least a dozen times and I still notice new details. I just finished the live action S2 and obviously had to go rewatch OG.

I only JUST noticed that the pai sho tiles have all the elements on them. You can see it in ep 1 when Iroh is playing with them.

Never noticed that before!

What are some details you noticed on rewatch?

My new Daredevil shelf

Pretty happy with this. I also have a bunch of DD Lego minifigs on a different shelf.

Live-Action Vs Animated

So the more I think about DCC being adapted into a TV show, the more I feel like it would be so much better animated instead of live-action. The amount of special effects needed for Donut alone would make the budget astronomical to get something good. There's so much more possibility in animation.

Book 7 especially feels like you'd either be making Lord of the Rings levels of grand battle scenes to get anything close to the epic scale of it all from the book.
