Update on my friend's disastrous trip plan

Hey folks, this is an update to https://www.reddit.com/r/KualaLumpur/s/nzSvH1lxaB where TLDR - the partner of a friend made a disastrous plan and said she doesn't need a Malaysian to tell her what to do.

Here's a bit of a plot twist:

The trip was the first time that I met Y in person because our friend had not introduced her to us before the trip and had kept his relationship private.

On day 1 where she planned to check in at 3pm, head to a cafe Taman Mutiara at 3.20pm, and then to Central Market at 4pm followed by Pavilion at 4.30pm.... well, as many of you guys who followed my previous post expected, it didn't happen.

What happened was we checked in right on time, but Y complained that all the walking up and down the stairs (quote: "Why KL have so many stairs unlike SG where government build lifts?") made her tired and she took a nap. We ended up staying at our accommodation until 6pm before we went to Pavi.

At Pavi she insisted on having Oriental Kopi because she remembered her SGrean friends telling her about how good the outlet was in JB. Honestly, it's meh to me.... but her 2nd choice was Uncle Roger's restaurant so.... oh well.

After the Oriental Kopi dinner we walked across the Shibuya crossing to FamilyMart and Y was like an overexcited child that simply got amazed by everything in FamilyMart (quote: "Why Malaysia 7-Eleven so advanced one SG don't have") and also got amazed by my partner (I'm a JB-ian and my gf is SGrean) using TnG e-wallet and Familymart app like a local lol.

(I'm soooo proud of my gf at her efforts of getting Malaysianised btw...)

On Day 2, my gf and I bailed and went on our own itinerary where we went up to 1U and took LRT3 down to Klang for brekkie at Chong Kok kopitiam, walked around the area and I showed her a few BKT places around the area plus the Hakka Paikut store (its a shame that Nasi Lemak Lido was gone for a very long time, if not she'd love the nasi lemak for sure). Then we took LRT3 up Stadium Shah Alam and Grabbed to Raja Tun Uda library (childhood memories of its 4D cinema), and then we went back to 1U and had our dinner at Dave's before returning to our accommodation.

As for them, Y had originally planned:

12pm: Lunch at a specific fast food place in KLCC

1pm: Grab to Botanical Garden

3pm: Grab to a specific cafe in Seri Kembangan, then to a book store in Jalan Sultan

4pm: Bowling at Berjaya Times Square

6pm: Dinner at a certain place at Berjaya Times Square

7.30pm: Watch light show at KLCC Park

Well it didn't happen.

They left the accommodation fairly late, went to KLCC (where Y complained afterwards, quote: "why KL so many complicated train lines like KTM, MRT, LRT, Monorail not like SG only got SMRT"), then took a Grab to Berjaya Times Square (where she complained afterwards on the different ticket prices for MyKad and foreigners, quote: "Why Malaysia theme park all charge foreigners so expensive to help locals?"), and then returned to accommodation.

As for food, they didn't visit K Fry and ended up eating at KLCC's food court, and then they had Mekdi for dinner (for which Y complained there was no curry sauce and that the ayam goreng was too spicy).

On day 3 she had initially wanted to visit TRX in the morning but ended up terlajak so there wasn't time to visit TRX. We checked out and had our lunch at KL Sentral's KFC. Me and partner wanted to try Krapow at NU Sentral but Y insisted on KFC. We know that we will visit KL again in the near future so we decided that eff it and just let her have her KFC.

During the train ride to JB Sentral she suddenly thought of wanting to eat Meng Meng Roasted Duck at City Square JB. Me and gf decided that its enough and we bailed again -- we alighted at Kulai and Grabbed to my home to stay overnight before we both returned to SG this afternoon.

My friend just made a very disastrous KL trip plan

4 of us (me from JB, the other 3 are Singaporeans) are planning a short 3D2N trip to KL. I (Malaysian) have visited KL very frequently with my girlfriend (Singaporean) and have our usual hangouts, but to friend T and his fiancee Y, they are visiting KL for the first time as a couple of 8 years and its their first overseas trip together without their parents in tow.

The initial agreement was for T to plan the itinerary and for me to touch up and adjust it. Then, Y came up with her own itinerary and insisted that everybody follow her itinerary.

When I told her that her itinerary was not realistic, she balas that she knows what shes doing and "don't need a Malaysian to tell her what to do".

This is her itinerary:

--- Day 1 ---

2.10pm: Arrive KL Sentral

3pm: Check in at an AirBnB near Maharajalela

3.20pm: Grab to a certain cafe at Taman Mutiara

4pm: Take train to Central Market

4.30pm: "Will reach Pavilion"

5pm: Shopping and dinner at Pavilion

(Rest of the day's plan omitted because she just wrote some random thoughts and ideas of things to do and eat in the itinerary like how an angry man named Adolf wrote a book called Mein Kampf).

--- Day 2 ---

9am: Breakfast at Airbnb near Maharajalela

10am: Petronas Twin Towers Skybridge

12pm: Lunch at a specific fast food place in KLCC

1pm: Grab to Botanical Garden

3pm: Grab to a specific cafe in Seri Kembangan, then to a book store in Jalan Sultan

4pm: Bowling at Berjaya Times Square

6pm: Dinner at a certain place at Berjaya Times Square

7.30pm: Watch light show at KLCC Park

8pm: Supermarket

--- Day 3 ---

12pm: Check out from Airbnb at Maharajalela

12.30pm: Lunch at a specific cafe at KLCC

2pm: Travel to KL Sentral

3.15pm: Train back to JB

So me and my girlfriend have decided to just buat bodoh and watch this disastrous itinerary play out later. We also have plans to bail from T and Y during the trip to visit the places that we want to visit on our own at our own pace.

Literally a "diesel-electric" train (Malaysia)

Problem statement:

- The government wants you to run a passenger train into an un-electrified freight line

- You do not have enough carriages to do it

- You have a couple of EMUs lying around

Solution:

Hook the EMU to a power generator car and use a locomotive to haul it

Freight yard converted to a temporary passenger station and electric train hooked to a power generator and a locomotive, Malaysia

Pasir Gudang is a port city at the southern tip of Malaysia and is served by a 40km (~25 miles)-long goods railway.

Recently, someone in the transport department thought of the idea of running passenger trains on this goods line. The grand plan will have a total of 4 stations on the line, but for now, they decided to start a shuttle service, possibly due to an upcoming state election.

To get this service started, they converted a freight yard into some sort of a temporary station by erecting a sheltered walkway and platform using sheet metal roof, using shipping container offices as passenger facilities, and built movable stairs to allow passengers to get on/off the train. It even has a ramp that allows wheelchair access.

As for the train, they took an electric commuter train, isolated its pantograph, hooked it to a generator car, and used a locomotive to haul it. Someone even came up with the idea of mounting a large portable power generator (the ones that you see on construction sites) to a flat wagon and then wire it to the commuter train to power the lights, AC, and doors.

While the exact plans are not known, it looked highly possible that the passenger service is being run as a trial and was probably being run this way to meet a tight deadline and a tight budget. There is a possibility that if the passenger demand fails to meet expectations, the train service might be axed and the temporary passenger facilities removed.

Are there usage limits for work account users?

My workplace has provided us access to Copilot (Basic) under our work account. Recently I have used mine as some sort of knowledge database by opening around 50 chats (each chat for a subsystem that I'm involved in), feeding each chat with around 3000-5000 pages of technical manuals, design documents, etc. and then asking Copilot to find specific information from the sources.

Another way that I frequently used Copilot for was feeding it email correspondence, pdf, or spreadsheets and asking it to generate spreadsheets to a specific format.

These have helped me a lot in my daily work, particularly the knowledge database because there's just too many documents to go through to find the info I need.

Then it suddenly dawned upon me that apps have a token/credit system and sometimes I do hit the daily usage limit on my other apps that I use for non-work things.

So my question is- is there a strict daily limit for Copilot Basic users under their work accounts? and will the token usage cost a lot to my employers from my usage?

PSA: BPLRT trains being manually driven now, CCK to BP took ~30 mins! LTA website still says train services running normally.

It has taken me close to 30 mins to travel from CCK to BP on BPLRT and all trains are being driven manually.

No announcements at stations, and LTA website said that BPLRT is ✅

The way my friend on FB uses AI is very concerning

One of my friends on FB has recently made her profile public (probably due to her business, and also because she needs to livestream for her business very often). She has posted a lot of AI videos of her and her family, **including** her 3 kids!

I'm not sure which AI software she used, but it's definitely something from China because the videos produced have China-based sceneries, backgrounds, characters, etc.

The dangerous thing is, the AI was VERY accurate in generating her entire family's faces and voices!

AI is a powerful tool and I personally use Gemini AI and Copilot to help me in my work. But my friend's case is a very concerning one.

Sukiya Brekkie Teishoku ($5.90)

I first came across this brekkie Teishoku set a few months ago, and now I'm sorta addicted to it. Well, a $5.90 breakfast with this variety of proteins in a mall is rather difficult to come by nowadays....

Will you choose AWS or MWS?

The company that I'm working in will be implementing MWS soon, but we will be given the option to choose whether we want an AWS or MWS payment and once chosen, it will be locked in until the next calendar year.

Currently, the policy regarding AWS is that if you resign before 31 Dec, the AWS will be clawed back.

For the new MWS option, the AWS sum will be split into 12 monthly payments. If you resign before the year ends, you get to keep all the MWS that had been paid out.

What will you choose?

States in Malaysia by ruling party and GDP per capita

Political positions:

  • BN - centre-right to right
  • PH - centre to centre-left
  • PN - right to far right
  • GPS - centre-right to right (regionalist)
  • GRS - centre-right to right (regionalist)

Notes:

  1. Federal territories are not included in this map as they are administered directly by the federal government and do not have elected local governments.
  2. BN, PH, PN, GPS, and GRS are all political coalitions formed of at least 3 or more political parties.
  3. The current federal government is a coalition of PH + BN + GPS + GRS, with PH and BN being the largest coalitions in the government.

Taiwan bought 37 of these blue trains. Then they found out they have enough monies left from the budget, so they bought 6 more trains

This is EMU800, an 8-car train used in local/commuter trains.

The train was built by Nippon Sharyo (Japan) and TRSC (Taiwan). The original budget approved in 2009 provided enough funds to buy 37 trainsets. The trains were delivered between 2012 and 2015 and entered service in 2014.

In 2015, as the last of the 37 trains were to be delivered, the Japanese yen was weaker than Taiwanese currency than in 2009. Because of the weaker Japanese yen, TRA (Taiwan Railway Administration) found that they have enough funds to buy more trains, and so they ordered 6 more trainsets from the manufacturers in 2016.

To distinguish these 6 trains from the other 37 trains, they inverted the blue and yellow livery.

In recent years, more and more elderly folks are travelling to JB for cheaper goods and services, and unsurprisingly, some of the things shared by fellow redditors here also crossed the Causeway into JB.

Have you ever seen 70+ y/o uncles climb and jump barricades to cut queue for 170? just go to either Woodlands Checkpoint or JB CIQ.

Have you ever seen aunties choping the queue for another group of 10 aunties to join the queue despite there being a large notice board telling people that reserving queues for others are not allowed? Just go to Kranji's 170X queue.

(Personally I have argued with an aunty who choped the queue for her entire family. She only stopped when the bus reached Woodlands Checkpoint and I threatened to get the Police involved if she continues to argue that she isn't wrong).

And have you seen uncles/aunties flashing their yellow give-me-your-seat cards on JB's pink buses wanting other passengers to give up their seats for them?

Travelling cross-border can be a stressful experience especially when it's crowded and the buses simply didn't show up (especially 160 170 170X 950, because CWL buses essentially operate as 2 different loops).

There are 2 conflicting thoughts on my head -- on one hand, as much as possible we try to be considerate to others especially to people who may have difficulties standing for extended periods. But on the other hand, in a crowded place like a checkpoint, the priority is to get people flowing without crushing each other, and there really isn't a safe space for things like priority queues for seniors and people in wheelchairs.

And also, if you (the uncles and aunties) choose to travel by bus across the border, you should have known what you are going to expect especially when it comes to long queues and hours of standing. If you cannot stand the long queues, either you plan your trip on a less crowded period or find alternative modes transport.

I work shifts in a rather secluded site surrounded by a motorway and a nature reserve.

A few days ago, the police came down to our office at night because they had received 50 calls from a number at our location. The number belonged to a phone in an under-used meeting room next to the office that I worked in.

The management rushed back to the office and got the night shift technicians and IT guys to check the phone, but everything was normal. They checked the surveillance cameras and door records and confirmed that there wasn't anyone inside the meeting room when the 50 calls happened.

The meeting room is located between the office space and an access corridor in the basement floor. There are no windows at the meeting room and it is rarely used for meetings -- during the day its usually used by staff taking a shortcut between the corridor and the office (there are 2 doors) or as a break room.

At night, some of the staff nap in that room during the quiet hours between 1am and 3am though nowadays the night shift staff don't seem to use the room anymore.

As I recall, I have used this room to take a nap during my night shift hours and to think about it, I had weird dreams on 7 out of 10 occasions! And I'd also wake up feeling very groggy and tired. I have always brushed them off as me being too tired as I have always encountered sleep deprivation when I'm on night shift.

Anecdotally, I recalled two things:

  1. Last month, one of the staff who rarely used the room decided to use the meeting room to work on a report. Less than 30 mins later, she came out of the room complaining that the room smelled moldy and it made her face itchy. She left work early because the itch got very bad and she was then out of action for 10 days due to a very bad mass pimple outbreak.

  2. The last time I used the room two weeks ago, I overslept and had to be waken up by my coworkers. On the previous night, I had also overslept in the room during quiet hours.

After this incident however, I am feeling sus that the weird dreams and nap issues that I had in the meeting room were not as straightforward as I thought... maybe there is something in that room?

I have asked a few coworkers around me and all of them said that they either had weird dreams or woke up feeling very exhausted. Another coworker recalled of sleep paralysis in the same room too!

Edit: the Police told us that when the dispatcher answered the calls, they only heard a static noise. The calls did not cut off and they just remained, static. The Police rushed down because they were worried that someone was trying to send a distress call or there was a hostage situation.
