Interesting bakery/dessert recommendations?

Don’t get me wrong, I love a classic buttery croissant or a good nostalgic dessert, but I really want to try out innovative and unique desserts/baked goods near central London!

I am British Chinese, so grew up with both traditional British and Cantonese food and am open to anything really, not picky.

But if you want specifics, I particularly love fusion flavours, especially French/British mixed with East Asian components.

I have also never really tried South Asian, African, or Mexican desserts before so if you have any suggestions, I would be very happy to try!

My take on the strawberries and cream sandwich

So it won’t let me spell out the Japanese name for this sandwich but I know it is a Japanese dessert.

I recently tried the M&S version that they had last year and this year (last picture) and found it quite disappointing, especially given the price. I’ve also had the sandwich in Japan, and the bread they use is pretty similar to store bought brioche, so if you don’t want to make the milk bread (shokupan), you can just buy from your local grocery store.

I used strawberries, whipped up some cream with sugar, and used homemade milk bread🥰 it turned out delicious! Very thick and some might say too much, but it was a great treat

A summery afternoon tea at home with my mum!

Not traditional, but we assembled it with what we had!🥰

Top layer: some lindor balls and chocolate Portuguese egg tarts
Middle layer: Japanese strawberry sandos, a chocolate eclair, and a strawberry tart
Bottom layer: cucumber and egg mayo croissants, pain au chocolat and a palmier (sorry they are hidden)

Kuro bagels, Notting Hill

Not the best bagel I’ve had but not bad, and the cream cheese was wonderful. My cinnamon raisin bagel with plain cream cheese was £5, but my friends’ were £12.

Does anyone have bagel recommendations around London which are amazing?

Crosstown donuts in Cambridge

The matcha strawberry donut is vegan and honestly found it delicious! The other one is called a chocolate pastry so ignore that lol but I don’t recommend it anyway, too dry

Ancient medicine or Mycenae?

Hello! I’m currently studying Classics at uni, and am struggling to decide on one of the modules I am taking for next year.

I have to decide between Ancient medicine (which covers a range of theories and practices related to health and illness in the ancient Mediterranean world, with a focus on, but not limited to, Greek and Roman sources) or Mycenae (focusing on art and archaeological theory).

I know it all comes down to personal preference but this is genuinely a situation where I am equally fascinated by both, and since I am not too familiar by either, I would love to hear if anyone has any experience in either or both areas of study.

If you have any insights at all, I would be incredibly grateful to hear them!

Brave little foxes wanting to join our picnic!

We were having sushi in the sun and these guys seem to have sniffed it out.

Anyone been to Xi’an or Xinjiang? What’s the food like there?

I’m going for 3 weeks this summer and very much look forward to explore a part of China I’ve never been before!

I’m also wondering if eating vegetarian/pescatarian is easy there? Is there easy access to convenience stores or ways to get steamed vegetables as well?

Missing laksa in the uk

I think UK does laksa very well but this one wasn’t as flavourful or rich, maybe because it was from a Japanese chain (Kineya). What’s your favourite kind of laksa?

Shroomy doo sandwich

Tofu, spring onions, lettuce, nooch, ketchup, and air fried mushrooms that I was too impatient to let cook fully so they’re like semi-raw😍

I paid for extra beans to fill the void left by the absence of rice but alas said void has not been fulfilled
