Motte-and-Bailey of Idealism

I've been following Acharya Prashant and looking into the philosophy of idealism after seeing a few posts and comments here. Before I get to my concerns, let me acknowledge what he does well:

What I Respect:

  1. He does call out pseudoscience. He has publicly dismissed astrology, homeopathy, and mystical claims on the grounds that they aren't falsifiable or verifiable.
  2. He advocates for veganism and animal rights. A lot of people have become vegan through his influence. His arguments are grounded in ethics and compassion, and he's helped many make the connection between consumption and violence.

I respect this a lot.

Where I See a Problem:

Despite articulating a rigorous standard for science, his core metaphysical claim fails his own criteria. The claim that consciousness is fundamental and the material world is appearance (maya).

Here's why idealism doesn't hold up as a claim about reality:

It's unfalsifiable. Idealism makes no testable predictions that differ from naturalism. Every possible observation is compatible with "consciousness is fundamental" and also with "the brain generates consciousness." There's no experiment that could distinguish the two. A claim that can't be wrong can't be right either.

But when idealism DOES make testable claims, it fails them. If consciousness is fundamental and the brain doesn't generate it, then:

  • Brain damage shouldn't erase specific conscious functions. But it does. Damage to the fusiform gyrus destroys face recognition. Hippocampal damage wipes out the ability to form new memories. Amygdala damage eliminates fear responses.
  • Anesthesia shouldn't turn consciousness off. But it does, reliably and reversibly, by targeting specific molecular receptors (GABA, NMDA).
  • Progressive neurodegeneration shouldn't gradually erode personality, memory, and awareness in lockstep with tissue loss. But it does.

Proponents of idealism dismiss these as correlations, but they aren't just correlations. These are direct, causal, bidirectional manipulations of conscious experience through the brain.

If consciousness exists independently of the brain, you'd need to explain why damaging this supposed "receiver" systematically destroys specific contents of consciousness. The destruction of particular capacities, rather than just signal strength, fits exactly the predictions of the "brain as generator" model (modern neuroscience).

Idealism handles this by retreating to: "That's just the ego-mind being affected, not the fundamental consciousness." But this is adding ad hoc machinery to protect the claim from evidence. The fundamental consciousness conveniently is poorly defined, can't be measured, detected, or affected by any physical process. It's immune to disconfirmation by definition.

This is the same structure as Last Thursdayism (the universe was created last Thursday with all history planted to appear older) or Young Earth creationism (the Earth is 6,000 years old, fossils were placed to test faith). All three make claims about how reality actually is while being structured so no observation can ever count against them.

I find that the rhetoric fits the motte-and-bailey: When the claim is challenged, retreat to the motte ("Vedanta isn't science, it's philosophy/darshana, you can't attack it with empirical standards"). But when promoting the teaching, imply the bailey (that consciousness being fundamental is actually true, not just a philosophical stance).

The contradiction is: he uses falsifiability to defend against astrology but exempts his own claims from the same standard.

My Question:

Why do people find him compelling?

I am not trying to diss him here, I am actually curious.

Try to go through the rationale and arguments I have attempted to articulate and engage with them if you disagree.

Need help figuring out what's ruining sleep

I am someone who has both parents who are diabetic. When I moved cities for studying I gained 20kgs in 1.5 years and got nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

I have always struggled with falling asleep, the main cause being psychological.

But after gaining weight, I got sleep apnea and even after I fell asleep, the sleep wasn't restful, basically ever.

Keto has helped my drop 12kg, fixing the sleep apnea and sleep quality. But after 2 months of better sleep on Keto, a new sleep issue is popping up. I find it even harder to fall asleep and I wake up earlier unable to sleep again. I don't feel well rested like I used to on keto previously but it's better than when I was overweight.

I tend to eat quite a bit of saturated fat (bacon, fatty steak, minced meat, butter, coconut oil) and full fat cream to get my fat on keto while I eat salad with olive oil too at least twice a week. I am still figuring out food variety on keto.

Lately I have been feeling repulsed by the cream and I am suspecting it could be the cause. I use it to make Butter chicken, Shahi paneer. what can I replace it with?

Could saturated fats be the problem since it has become the dominant fat?

Or could it be something else I am not considering?

Currently trying to increase carb intake at dinner by eating berries with 10% fat joghurt or drinking 50ml of Oatmilk since yesterday. No benefits yet.

What's your opinion on religions?

Any of you feminists religious? If yes, why do you think religion is a good idea?

Which, if any religion do you find acceptable and why?

I find that all religions that I am familiar with are against the interests of any progressive idea, including feminism. I know some people can be religious and feminist but the foundations of religions (the religious texts) tend to not be so without significant mental gymnastics.

How to install ConvergenceER with Seamless Co-op on Linux?

I am using the Steam Deck installation instructions from the Convergence discord:

>Installing without the launcher:,

>While in desktop mode

>Go to https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/3419?tab=files and use the manual download for Convergence ER v2.2.3A and install the mod anywhere EXCEPT for the Elden ring game folder.,

>Extract the mod from the zip folder.,

>Add the Start_Convergence.bat as a non-steam game. (you may need to clear the filters at the bottom of the search window for the .bat file to show up),

>Force steam compatibility with proton experimental for Start_Convergence.bat AND Elden Ring.,

>Adding seamless co-op,

>While in desktop mode

>download and unzip the seamless coop mod from here,

>place the SeamlessCoop folder and the ersc_launcher.exe in the ConvergenceER folder,

>Add a multiplayer password by editing the ersc_settings.ini (which is inside the SeamlessCoop folder),

>launch the mod normally through gaming mode and seamless should now be installed and ready to play (the main menu will have the seamless coop version in the bottom right corner of the main menu if all steps have been followed correctly) (sit at any grace to recieve the seamless items)

I did this (but with ConvergenceER 3.0) and I launched Start_Convergence.bat file via Steam with proton experimental and I get the following in the terminal:

>FINDSTR: /b ignored
Launching the Convergence: Elden Ring with Seamless Coop.

Why do you guys use Proton?

I use it for their end-to-encrypted services that are better for privacy than gmail is. That's still true inspite of the recent controversy.

I don't look to them as someone I will take political cues from. I can understand that Proton hires from all sides in politics (because they hire based on tech knowledge) and there will be employees managers etc who I disagree with me.

Isn't it one of the goals with privacy that we can have our different political views without punishment from authority? This gives us the freedom to evolve our non-mainstream views. I don't hold the same political views as I did 10 years ago.

If your threshold for trust is complete political agreement with an entity like a company, wouldn't you struggle to find any service that meets your threshold?

Then there comes the danger of resigning to not caring about privacy and going for new services all the time or worse: based on politics, just going back to gmail.

The kind of thing that would make me ditch proton would be them planting back doors in their services, compromising security or privacy in some way. Because I am here for their privacy and security mainly.

EDIT: many of you are misunderstanding what I am saying. I am NOT saying the views of the guy they sponsored are okay. It is also NOT okay that they carelessly sponsored the guy. But, they took ownership and said they would do better. So, I am trying to remind folks of the broader context here, there are corporation like Meta and Google who are quite bad and might not acknowledge any wrongdoing whatsoever.

Advice on programming language choice for Physics simulations

I am a Physicist working with my supervisor's simulation spaghetti code written in C (8000+ lines, one .C file, almost all global variables, 3 letter variable names, comments as version control) and I was thinking of rewriting it's logic and numerics in another programming language trying to stick to that programming language's style.

I am a programming noob overall, I have some Python experience from plotting and analyzing data, I have some experience with Julia programming using (as a tinkerer) libraries like ParallelStencil.jl and KernelAbstractions.jl and also some C experience from looking at, using and modifying that bad C code. I have no formal code training apart from 1 or 2 week-long workshops.

I always hear that Rust's appeal is memory safety but my simulation code isn't important from a security point of view. So, is memory safety still relevant for my use-case? I see many projects like Ironbar (waybar functionality), Zed editor that are written in Rust and aren't security oriented, so am I missing something about it's strengths?

What other advantage does Rust give me over Julia?

I am leaning mostly towards Julia currently because it enables me to write code focusing mainly on the Physics and the Numerics while the GPU backend stuff is abstracted away with libraries like KernelAbstractions.jl. Is there any other programming language that I should be considering?

EDIT: I left out some important detail, folks are assuming the original C code is performant, it's not. It's naively parallelized with OpenMP and doesn't scale past 16 cores, it has barely any scaling past even 8 cores.

I have already experimented with porting a simplified 2D code from naive C (written by the same author in the same style) to naive Julia (with me just winging it) using KernelAbstractions and I already got 5x the performance of the C on a Titan V GPU. The original code is CPU only and can't do multi-node runs.

EDIT 2: Thanks for all your input, I understand Rust's strengths better now. It's a great tool if you build large projects and want fine control and good tools to manage that fine control.
I have decided to stick with Julia's ParallelStencil.jl library which allows for writing a code that would run on CPUs, NVIDIA GPUs and AMDGPUs with the option to add multi-GPU capability with the library ImplicitGlobalGrid.jl.
The downside to an equivalent code in C++ is the 2-3 minutes Julia wastes with it's JIT compiler on first run. But for a simulation that's going to run close to 10 hours, that's fine.

First they came for the communist: A more visceral version

Just liked this narration of Hangman, it's a different version of:

>First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

>Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

>Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

>Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

>Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Confused about Macros on food products

I have been eating these pumpkin seeds as snacks 70g at a time since it has only 2g of carbs per 100g according to the packaging. But some other pumpkin seeds I have seen at the supermarket have something like 30+% of carbs. That made me start to think maybe it's a mistake by the manufacturer.

I have also seen Red Lentils with 20% carbs (20g per 100g portion) and I have also seen ones with around 40%.

What's happening here? Is it the shell removal (in pumpkin seeds) that's removing carbs? Is it a different species of lentil/pumpkin? Or is it that these labels are unreliable?

I would hate it if labels are unreliable.

Moving to decentralized platforms

Love the movement, but I had a suggestion to move to Federated platforms. If we are on platforms like Instagram, Reddit, or even Discord they can ask the people behind these corporations to delete the accounts or unfairly moderate them.

On federated platforms like lemmy, piefed or mastodon, we can be spread across multiple instances and it would be harder for the people in power to censor us.

What do you think?

Need help for making electrolytes consistent (preferably without supplementation)

I have been doing keto for about a month and I am really liking it so far. I use these water soluble Magnesium or Magnesium+Potassium pellets as a way to get my electrolytes along with more salt in food.
However, I don't like drinking them daily so I don't drink them on a regular basis (I am currently averaging twice a week). As a result, I find that I have low energy levels at times.

So, please suggest strategies to get sufficient magnesium, potassium and sodium (those are the only ones, right?) preferably without supplementation. I am open to supplements too, but I hope they aren't unpleasant to take.

Privacy friendly Calender that I can use Offline and integrated with waybar

I already have Proton and Tuta account and I currently use Proton Calender. But, it's quite frustrating that I cannot even add things offline on my Android app.

I was looking to integrate my Calender into my Window Manager environment using waybar and I realized it's not possible with Proton Calender or with Tuta.

ProtonBridge still doesn't support Proton Calender, so I am looking for alternatives. Preferably, end-to-end encrypted but I am willing to compromise on that as long as it's FOSS.

Moved from alacritty to kitty but I miss alacritty's fast startup

Have been using alacritty and I loved it's fast startup (keyboard to window latency was super low). I now have moved to kitty for it's image rendering capabilities and the latency is quite noticeable.

Any way I can speed it up? I already tried using this guide but it's still quite slow (400 ms is my guess).

EDIT: System Specs:
Ryzen 5600X
AMD Radeon 7900XT
16gb of DDR4 memory
Debian 13 with Niri + Noctalia-shell

UPDATE: tried both Foot and ghostty, settled on ghostty since it worked out of the box with yazi without config and launches with similar latency as alacritty. It has both image rendering (like foot) and ligatures (unlike foot).

UPDATE 2: Thank you for all your input. I have settled on using ghostty on my desktop (which is as quick as alacritty) and foot on my 9 year old laptop.

Build/weapon suggestions ERConvergence

I am currently playing Convergence with co-op with several of my friends and its a lot of fun. I am playing as the Joker with Flame of Frenzy and i just got the Blade of Distant light, its a fun weapon but it's hard to use it unless the enemy is not focusing you. It was fun for 10-15 levels after I got it but now it's not.

I am looking for Convergence specific weapon suggestions that are more useful with a learning curve (doesn't have to be flashy). For example, i really liked the Bloodhounds Fang in the base game.

What build/weapon or spells should I try?

I am currently using Fedora Sway edition for gaming via Steam it seems to be okay, although there are some issues (like Steam's in-built browser being a bit slow to respond, swayidle locking screen when using a gamepad) I have found tweaks to still continue to use it.

I was wondering how the gaming experience is in Cosmic Desktop compared to Sway. I know it won't be as polished as KDE or GNOME but is it atleast as polished as gaming on Sway?

I just installed Fedora 43 Sway edition on my Gaming Desktop (from KDE on Endeavor) and I have configured it and I am liking it. However, when I play games with a controller (Nightreign), after every 15 minutes or so due to swayidle, my screen locks. I have to unlock it to resume playing. This sucks in a game like Nightreign.

What is the proper way to fix this? I know I could disable swayidle altogether, but I guess there is more elegant solution for this.

UPDATE: Disabled swayidle and installed and enabled hypridle instead from the solopasha/hyprland copr repo. Now screen doesn't lock for games anymore.
