China has pledged to “firmly support” Cuba days after President Trump told the United Nations that the island “will fall”.

Marking 66 years of diplomatic relations on Monday, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Guo Jiakun, said China would back Cuba in “exploring the socialist development path suited to its national conditions” and in opposing outside interference.

Mr Trump had called Cuba an “absolutely failed state” and “a haven for foreign adversaries” in his General Assembly speech on 22 September, prompting the Cuban delegation to leave the hall.

Cuba’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, replied that “Cuba is not a threat, the blockade is”, referring to the American trade embargo in place since 1962. The United States says its measures are a response to political repression on the island.
