Swarm MMO: New World and new mechanics

Hi all

A new world just started in Swarm MMO (https://swarm-mmo.com), feel free to jump in and try it out! In Swarm MMO, you control probes in a procedurally generated galaxy and conquer planets and suns.

Some changes since the last update (Thanks again for all players for the feedback!):

  • The void: Planet wide timer that indicates the end of the world. if reached, the void slowly closes in until only one clan/player stands
  • Improved spawn positions and player spacing
  • Balancing to make it easier for new players
  • Solar surge/solar discharge: Abilities on suns that influence planets nearby
  • Many smaller bugfixes

Feel free to take a look and join to see the new features. No sign up required. As always, thanks for the support and I hope you enjoy the game.

I created Stargate, a GUI for SpacetimeDB

Inspired by pgAdmin or MongoDB Compass, i built Stargate, a GUI Tool to explore Spacetime databases. It has the expected features such as:

  • Viewing tables (live) and editing fields
  • Viewing and calling reducers
  • Viewing logs
  • Viewing scheduled tasks (and warning when a stale task is detected)
  • Executing SQL

Additionally, it is also possible to generate an OpenAPI schema that documents all available endpoints (reducers) and the required authentication.

I built it originally because I'm working on a game myself and wanted a way to easily view and edit data, without hosting in the maincloud. But i think its a valuable tool in general.

Server costs in multiplayer free to play games, whats your experience?

Hi all, I'm currently building multiplayer browser game, where you own planets that create probes, which again can be used to conquer more planets. I built it originally to try out SpacetimeDB, which I'm pretty happy with. However, there can be thousands of planets, and thousands of attacks at the same time, which starts to create substantial server costs. I'm currenly at about $20 per month, with around 20-40 active players.

Originally, I have hidden some features behind a subscription in order to cover the costs. However, many players complained (rightfully) that this was pay to win. So i changed it to sell purely cosmetic additions (other map layouts, player animations). However since I made this change, subscriptions dropped to essentially zero.

I was wondering in particular, has anyone made similar experiences? How much money did you spend on server costs before you got returns?

Swarm MMO: Implemented more of your feedback

Hi all

Since the last post I again received lots of feedback for my game Swarm MMO (https://swarm-mmo.com). Currently I'm struggling to read and implement all feedback from discord and chat, but I'm very thankful for it and trying my best :)

In Swarm MMO, you control probes in a procedurally generated galaxy and conquer planets and suns.

Some changes since the last update:

  • Logs can be subscribed/unsubscribed
  • Fix lots of bugs around player spawning and suns
  • Move the energy collection mechanic from clans to individuals
  • Visual improvements
  • Clan chat

Feel free to take a look and join to see the new features. No sign up required. Thanks for the support and I hope you enjoy the game.

Swarm MMO: Planet Conquering game built on SpacetimeDB

Hi all, I'm currently building Swarm MMO, a game where you own plaents that create probes, which again can be used to conquer more planets. I built it originally to try out SpacetimeDB, and so far I'm impressed with its performance. What currently bothers me the most is that migrations can be pretty annoying compared to the "usual" SQL migrations.

I was wondering if anyone else built a game using SpacetimeDB, and if you are using the official maincloud from the spacetime devs or do self hosting? Any experience with server costs?

Swarm MMO: No more paid automation

Hi all

Since the last post I received lots of feedback for my game Swarm MMO (https://swarm-mmo.com). In Swarm MMO, you control probes in a procedurally generated galaxy and conquer planets and suns.

I implemented a lot of player feedback, the most important are:

  • Automations are now a free feature. Automations enable upgrading planets and sending probes while offline
  • Suns: Control a majority of planets around a sun to control it. Suns produce super-probes that can attack only other suns. This creates a gameplay layer for advanced players
  • Clans: Players can join clans and win together. Suns produce energy for clans which enable boosts for all the players in a clan. These boosts persist between new worlds

Feel free to take a look and join to see the new features. No sign up required. Oh, and thank you all for the great support and feedback so far.

Swarm MMO: Hibernation mechanic to get some sleep

Hi all

I recently implemented more of your feedback for my game Swarm MMO. In Swarm MMO, you start with a single planet in your own solar system on an infinite procedurally generated map, and your goal is to expand your territory by conquering other planets.

There was a lot of feedback about players feeling like the game was too intense, in particular over night where you are unable to react to other players moves. This is why I implemented a "hibernation" system. It pauses all your progress and makes you unable to launch attacks. In turn, other players can't attack you. I don't think I have seen any similar mechanics in multiplayer games so far, so I'm curious about your feedback. Did you ever see something like this before? What other approaches are there for games that may take multiple days?

Swarm MMO: Browser-based idle MMO where you command a swarm conquer planets

You start with a single planet in your own solar system on an infinite procedurally generated map, and your goal is to expand your territory by conquering other planets.

Every planet produces probes over time, and you attack by dragging from one of your planets to a target to launch a swarm. You capture a planet by sending more probes than it has defenders. You can also upgrade your planets and project power across longer distances. You can form alliances with other players or go at it alone.

The whole thing runs in the browser with no sign-up required. If you want to save your progress across devices, you can optionally link an email.

Swarm MMO: Implemented Your Feedback

Hi all

Recently I posted about my game Swarm MMO (https://www.swarm-mmo.com), a browser-based idle MMO where you command a swarm and conquer planets.

I received a lot of feedback which I implemented over the weekend. Thank you all for the constructive feedback! New features include:

- A better map view when zooming out
- Chat
- Allow users to be logged in from multiple devices at the same time
- Reduced the price for premium functionality

Whats also planned:

- Improved alliance system
- Ally/enemy indicator on the map

A new game has just started, so feel free to hop back in and try it out. Thanks!

Hey all!

After taking a long break from developing games, i finally decided to take another attempt at developing a browsergame, which I'd like to share here.

On the tech side, the backend is built with SpacetimeDB in Rust, which handles all the game state and real-time sync, and the frontend is React with TypeScript rendering everything on a 2D canvas. I hope that it is scalable enough to handle hunderts of players at once, but let's see if that's possible :)
