A little sad that MIL does not want to speak at wedding

So to preface, my future MIL is an absolute angel and I love her to death. We go on vacation together, talk all the time, and she’s been a huge help in planning the wedding (as well as contributing a SIGNIFICANT amount financially). 10/10 person and relationship.

She recently asked me who would be doing the readings at our church ceremony, and I said go “well, I was hoping you would do a reading for us!”

She is the only truly religious one in both our families, and was really excited when we told her we were having the ceremony in a church. I felt like this would be a great opportunity to honor her for all the help she’s given us.

She looked kind of surprised and was like “hmmmmmm… I don’t know, I’d feel odd.” I was taken aback by that because I honestly thought she’d be very excited! I asked if it was because of nerves about public speaking, and she assured me it was not (she recently retired from a high powered role with a lot of public speaking).

She basically told me that she thinks the mother of the groom should stay out of sight in the background and it should be “the bride’s day.” So basically she’d feel weird as the MOG taking the spotlight off of me.

I don’t agree with her reasoning but I didn’t push it and only asked her to think about it, because we’d love to have to have her speak. I’m not sure how to go about this now…do I just leave it alone? It would mean a lot for me to have her speak but I don’t want to make her uncomfortable. I’m just a bit disappointed I guess

Do I need to explain “black tie optional” to my guests?

My wedding is black tie optional. In my head this is - wear a tux if you happen to have one or would like to, but a dark formal suit is also fine. Ladies - floor length gown if you have one, formal dresses or separates also fine. Do I have to explain this on the website/invites or do we feel like people understand this?

There is no preferred color scheme. Ladies should not wear white dresses (should I put this in writing?)

Edit: yes, this is a black tie optional event. Indoors, ballroom, evening, valet, etc.

Edit #2: It seems some of you are offended by the mere concept of black tie attire, but I’m not really here to debate the existence of a dress code lol

Receiving a bit of pushback from makeup artist - am I in the wrong?

My mother in law is being very generous and paying for my makeup to be done on the day of my wedding. None of my family or bridesmaids are choosing to have it done - it’s my MIL, her sister, her daughter, her daughter’s MIL, her daughter’s SIL, and me. MUA is part of daughter’s in-law’s family and has done their makeup before.

I would really like to stay in my bridal suite all day with my mom and bridesmaids while hanging out/getting ready, but the makeup artist is going to set up in my MIL’s room. I asked if she would move to the bridal suite (I am the last to go) after finishing everyone in my MIL’s suite, and she pushed back saying it wasn’t ideal for her due to timing, it gets chaotic, schedule might change, etc.

She also suggested I have people do timed slots in my bridal suite so as not to overcrowd, but I don’t really know her daughter’s MIL and SIL that well and I don’t want random extended non-family in my suite. Am I being extra? I feel like the vendors (hair and makeup at least) should come to the bride’s suite for the bride.

Rent the Runway didn’t work out, wedding is on Friday

Was kind of banking on Rent the Runway for this wedding and it just did not fit right. Finally found a dress after running around the city for 5 hours! Dress code is black tie optional.

Black tie optional in mid July, New England. Large ballroom with maybe outdoor ceremony

Edit: everyone is saying no to the style, so I’m picking something else. Though for some of you I continue to disagree with the anti-red, I think that “red on a woman = bad!” is not a modern or culturally diverse take.

BLACK TIE OPTIONAL - I know BTO generally means floor length, but I go to so many summer weddings and it gets so hot underneath the dress sometimes. Leaning on the O side of BTO here.

Can I get away with ankle length? I already own this dress. The material is quite thick. Will zuzh it up with gold accessories, clutch, etc

Only color request from bride is no light blue.

Fainted this morning and scared the shit out of myself

Still a little shaky but fine. Been on tirz for 5 months, (27F, 5’5”, 190 to 156) everything going well.

I stood up off the couch this morning and just like blacked out, fell back into the cabinet hard and went down to the ground. I didn’t really realize what happened for a second, my fiance came over to help me up and was also scared shitless.

Went in to urgent care just to make sure and everything looks totally normal. This has never happened to me before. Sometimes I get dizzy when I stand up but nothing like this. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Venue just informed me they’re having renovations done during my wedding….

I booked a year ago (June 2025) for a wedding date in winter 2026. During booking, I asked our the hotel wedding planner if they were planning any renovations. She said no. Lo and behold, a year later, here comes an email that they’re doing renovations to their guest rooms.

I do honestly feel like they are trying their best to assuage my concerns, it’s just not an email that I wanted to get. We’re 6 months out, everything is booked, and I’m sure there’s some tiny print that says they can do whatever renovations they want - we’re not trying to go anywhere.

She has promised:
- no construction at all from Friday-Sun
- the only space we would view that will be impacted is the lobby and side entrance (about a quarter of the lobby will be portioned off by a screen, and the side entrance will be closed. Main entrance remains open)

Like I know it’s fine. My wedding reception is on a completely different floor in a separate ballroom and there isn’t actually work happening during the entire wedding weekend. I’m just annoyed because UGGGGGHHHH of course. This just has to take place at this time.

So I far I just confirmed with her that the remaining entrance is handicap accessible and that there is no construction during the weekend. Do you think there’s anything else I should add?

Combining finances after marriage? (Amex gold questions)

We each have an Amex gold card from before we met, and my fiancé floated the idea of closing one card and both of us being authorized users on the remaining account (doesn’t matter whose account). This is to save on the yearly fee ($400 ish)

Are there any drawbacks to this? We have separate finances now and are trying to figure out how to best combine them.

Had tickets for 2pm in July…any recs for a different slot?

Found out Clay is leaving :….(
Nevertheless, excited to see it for the third time! I saw Clay the first 2 times and was OBSESSED. Thinking of switching my time slot. Anyone have any recs for a Phantom that gives similar vibes? High high drama, screaming/crying/throwing up etc. lol

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I have switched my pulse to Ryan at 2:15!!!! Super excited

How is this hairstyle achieved? Where do the extensions go in?

I know she must be wearing extensions, but I don’t know where they’re going in. I’m trying to get this look for my wedding. I have similar hair to this, not quite waist length but close. I also have thick hair, but definitely not as thick as this.

Has anyone heard rumblings about Clay leaving?

I have tickets in July to see him again for the 2pm slot. I feel like there’s been a bit of turnover the past few weeks, but I haven’t heard anything about him yet right?….RIGHT??? 😂

Is it weird if I ask for a “trade” as a vendor? (Guest painter)

Mods, please delete if this isn’t allowed.

Basically, I’m a wedding guest painter (like live painting the guests on a 5x7) and I realllllly want to do a wedding abroad. Like to the point I don’t really need to make any money, I just want to break even on the flight/accommodation once I get there. The farthest I’ve been to paint (I’m based in Boston) is South Carolina.

I’m going to a wedding expo soon - would people find it weird if I was like “hey! If you’re having a wedding abroad, I would love to do your wedding at cost! Like literally I just need to get there!” Or is that creepy lol

Feedback welcome!
