I feel like we’re having a conversation about data centres while completely skipping the most interesting question: why are we building all of this computing capacity in the first place?
Everywhere I look, the discussion is about water consumption, electricity demand, emissions, land use, or how much money companies are making.
Those are important questions, but they’re questions about the cost of the buildout.
I’m curious about the other end of the equation.
What do we actually expect the world to look like when we’ve built tens of thousands of enormous data centres and have vastly more computing capacity than we do today?
What problem are we ultimately trying to solve?
Is the hope that AI and abundant computing will dramatically increase productivity? Accelerate scientific discovery? Automate huge portions of the economy? Create some kind of abundance that isn’t currently possible?
Or is this partly an arms race?
I’m not asking whether AI is good or evil, and I’m definitely not looking for “Skynet/Terminator” predictions.
I’m genuinely asking: What is the envisioned end state? What does humanity think all this computing power is going to accomplish? What will 200,000 data centres give us that 400 won’t? (Please be kind with numbers, I’m pulling them out of thin air)
It seems strange that we’re debating the enormous infrastructure required to build the future without spending nearly as much time talking about what future we’re actually trying to build.
I did read about thirty “purchase advice” posts but didn’t seem to find my answer. Please forgive for another 🙄 one of us first timers.
I’m looking to buy my first superautomatic and honestly know very little about these machines, so I’m hoping the people here can point me in the right direction. I’m trying to replace my wife’s Nespresso money eating machine 😂.
What I’m looking for:
Reliability/longevity is #1. I want the Toyota of coffee machines. Boring is fine. I’d rather pay more upfront for something that’s well built, repairable and likely to last for many years than save a few hundred bucks and replace it later.
Good coffee, obviously. I’m not chasing the absolute best espresso in the world, just something consistently good.
Milk drinks are important.
I really like oat milk and nut milks, so I’d love something that works well with those. I’m not sure whether I need a particular type of milk system for this.
Easy cleaning/maintenance would be a big plus.
I don’t really care about having a million fancy apps/features.
Budget is flexible if there’s a significant jump in quality/reliability.
I’m in Canada, and Costco.ca would be nice for the return policy, but it’s definitely not a requirement.
If you were buying one with reliability and longevity as the priority, what would you buy?
And are there any brands/models I should specifically avoid?
Feel free to educate me. I know enough about these machines to know that I don’t know much. 😂
TL/DR Looking for the Toyota of superautomatics: reliable, long-lasting, easy to maintain, good coffee, and ideally great with oat/nut milk.
EDIT: Costco.ca has these models currently (all in CAD) but it's only a preference to buy at Costco, if none of these make sense, Ill buy anywhere:
Philips 3200 $460,
Philips Baristina $500,
Ninja Luxe Cafe $630,
Chefman Crema Supreme $500,
Bosch 300 $700,
Jura Ena 8 $2300,
Kenmore Stainless $480,
Kenmore Super automatic $629,
Miele CM6160 Mil Perfection $2600,
Miele CM6360 $2500,
Rocket Espresso Milano Mozzafiato Cronometro $4000
I’m looking for local opinions that aren’t in echo chambers.
Im Metis and honestly don’t know enough to sit in a camp. 🤷♂️
My wife switched us to a Nespresso a couple months ago. She loves it. My two adult kids love it.
We’ve gone through 250 pods in two months.
Sometimes I catch someone using TWO pods for one coffee. Other times I find an almost-full cup.
“Why didn’t you drink it?”
“It was too strong, I didn’t like that one…”
😡😤🤬😖
Whenever I complain, my wife reminds me that I own a motorcycle.
Fair. 🙄
I just can’t stop thinking about all these little pods going straight into the garbage and how much this costs! Like $1.50 to $2 each and everyone is so chill about it.
Rant over.
Edit: So many reaching out to say they make refillable pods. I know, we discussed. “I love trying all the flavours and the creama that’s on top… just let me have this…” Nestle knows what they’re doing. 🙄
Just saw this posted. Thought some of you might be interested. I commute to Nanaimo for work and see some terrible driving daily.
🔹RCMP chopper called in to catch bad drivers and motorcyclists on Nanaimo roadways; many motorists served tickets and charged🔹
A barrage of tickets was recently handed out to Nanaimo motorists along with many charges after Air 8 was called in to help police catch bad drivers. More from the RCMP:
On Sunday August 9, 2026, Nanaimo RCMP partnered with Comox Air Services Air 8 as part of an ongoing traffic enforcement initiative aimed at improving road safety. The initiative was the result of concerns raised by the public regarding dangerous driving behaviours, particularly among motorcyclists.
The aerial support provided officers on the ground with a valuable advantage. While frontline officers focused on identifying and investigating violations, Air 8 maintained an overview of traffic conditions and vehicle movements, enhancing both officer and public safety.
During the operation, officers observed 46 traffic violations, issued 33 charges under the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), issued 8 warnings, served one 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP), and impounded four vehicles. Approximately one third of the violations were issued to motorcycle riders.
Enforcement results included:
10 charges for speeding under the (MVA)
5 charges for excessive speeding (MVA)
10 charges for no-insurance tickets (MVA)
14 other MVA charges for various violations, resulting in 10 tickets and 4 warnings.
7 Motor Vehicle Act Regulation violations, resulting in 4 tickets and 3 warnings.
1 impaired driver who received a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition.
4 vehicle impoundments, including 2 charges for excessive speed and 2 for stunting-related offences.
One incident highlighted the effectiveness of aerial support. At approximately 9 p.m., an officer was preparing to stop a motorcyclist operating without a licence plate. Before the stop was initiated, the rider noticed Air 8 overhead and immediately pulled over to the side of the road. When the officer approached, the rider simply pointed toward the helicopter, recognizing that police had a clear view of his movements.
"Road safety continues to be a priority for the Nanaimo RCMP. This enforcement initiative was undertaken in response to concerns we have received from the public regarding dangerous driving behaviours on our roadways by motor vehicles and motorcyclist’s alike," said Inspector Donovan Tait, Officer in Charge of the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment. "The addition of Air 8 provided officers with a valuable perspective that enhanced safety and allowed us to more effectively monitor traffic throughout the area. We will continue to work with our partners and use all available tools to promote safe driving and hold those who choose to put others at risk accountable."
The Nanaimo RCMP thanks the public for their continued support and encourages anyone who witnesses dangerous driving behaviour to report it when it is safe to do so by calling the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
It’s been years… I’ll wake up feeling awesome and look over to BS tearing up and saying to me “apologize again and make sure it’s sincere and that you get how much harm you have done.” Then two days later in the middle of sex “do you really get it? Apologize again like you really mean it…” then three days later I have my coffee headed to work, turn to BP to give kiss goodbye, “no… tell me you are sorry again… like you really get it… I want to see tears in your eyes…” week after week, month after month.
I’m exhausted. This feels like purgatory. I know I’ll get little sympathy, I did the crime, now I do the time but god, it’s hard. Inside I’m full of resentment and a part of me wants to just scream “fuck off and leave me if you won’t just let it go!”
Just venting. Anyone else tired years later? How do you stay in the pit so long?
This is how my brain thinks of IFS therapy. 😂
I noticed today that my speedometer seems to be reading way higher than my actual speed.
I compared it to GPS over a fairly long stretch of highway, and it was very consistent:
GPS: 110 km/h
Bike: 122 km/h
That’s almost a 10% difference.
The bike is a 2017 Africa Twin DCT with stock gearing and stock tire sizes.
Has anyone else experienced this on their Africa Twin?
If so:
What ended up causing it?
Is there a way to calibrate or fix it?
I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who’s dealt with this before.
I’m deep into my fourth turn of the wheel… am an old time junkie 😂. I changed my professional email signature to long days and pleasant nights… anyone have any others that they pulled from the book or ways to hint in the world that you’re a junkie?
Nobody has caught it yet. 😂
I use it a lot to diagnose mechanical issues. It’s been so so good but the last week has been just wow. It’s just randomly making shit up so bad. It even gives warnings of “don’t mess this up, you may fry your engine computer” then when I double check it with Google it’s been wrong in its advice so consistently and if I had followed the advice I’d have fried my systems multiple times. When I call it out it’s just “yeah my bad”.
But like compared to 3 months ago I’d say it missed the mark 5% of the time before. Now it’s like 70%. I don’t trust anything it says anymore.
Anyone else seeing this?
I’m looking across western Canada and the US. Can only find on BaT and similar for ludicrous prices. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I checked Craigslist. 🤷♂️
We’ve got ~500k sitting as a future down payment, but no idea when we’re actually buying (could be years, right now we are happy renting).
Right now it’s in HISA promo hopping and I’m honestly tired of playing “switch banks every 3 months” like it’s a part-time job.
I’m tempted to just park most/all of it in something like CASH.TO and forget about it.
Is that still the go-to in Canada for “low drama, don’t lose sleep, decent interest” cash parking? Or is there a better option in 2026 I’m missing?
Low risk, needs to stay fairly liquid, and I’m done babysitting accounts.
Appreciate any sane takes.
I just wanted to leave this for future people who are thinking of using Fortnine.
First off they had everything I needed and I saved 32 dollars on a 200 dollar order. That’s not insignificant.
May 10th I put in the order. Everything showing in stock.
May 25th received notice my shipment is delayed
May 31st received notice they were still missing a single small bolt and cannot split the order.
June 2nd showing shipped to arrive June 10th.
This same thing happened last summer.
My recommendation is if it’s the off season and you have a month or two to wait, Fortnine is awesome. If you actually need your parts, go anywhere else.
That’s all. 😊
Looking for some opinions from riders with experience on the Heidenau K60 Scout.
The tire still measures 5 mm of tread depth and isn’t close to wear bars, but it’s become pretty squared off from highway riding. Looking at it from behind, it’s starting to resemble a car tire more than a motorcycle tire.
I’m wondering if the profile is now the bigger issue.
There’s also micro cracks (in 3rd pic). Is that an issue?
I just bought the bike, last owner says 5,000km easy left. I’m scratching my head and noticing new tires are round. 😅
I bought the bike like this. Just had electrical tape on it. I’ve seen these lights broken on many posts so I know somebody out there already figured this out.
