Need advice on converting long novels into abridged forms
I volunteer teaching English to new English learners. One thing I've been doing is taking public domain novels (Dracula, Moby Dick, etc.) and abridging them and converting the text to A2 level English. The output isn't fantastic to be honest.
Ideally I'd like a shortened abridged version in A2 English. My process in ChatGPT has been:
- Convert the entire novel to A2 (advanced beginner) English.
- Ask ChatGPT to then shorten the novel to around 10,000 words. For some works like Christmas Carol this takes it from 28,000 words to 10,000 words. But for others like A Count of Monte Cristo it will take it down to 40,000 words.
Here's the problem:
- Often ChatGPT will override my demand that it recreate the orignal novel sentence by sentence. Instead, it just says "Oh A2 requires a shorter novel so I made it shorter for you."
- Sometimes it drops entire important plot points and then adds or creates (e.g. hallucinates) new scenes and characters.
Any suggestions on my workflow? Would it be better to go chapter by chapter which would really add time to this project? I volunteer so don't want to spend hours and hours on it.
