Is it possible to study/work in Pompeii as a Canadian who's already finished undergrad?

BA in Anthropology from a very small university, but I feel such a pull towards Pompeii or the Herculaneum. Am I just totally cooked and born in the wrong country to work on this? I have no idea if any schools in Canada or even any professors at those schools work in that area for me to study it for my Master's.

I don't come from a well off family so I likely wouldn't be able to afford to move to Italy for a Master's with the cost of visa, international tuition, housing etc :(

I understand that the answer is likely no as I am a brokie from Alberta without the means to move to Italy LOL but who knows maybe someone on the internet knows of someone who knows of someone at a school in Canada who studies Pompeii !! Optimism never hurts!

Worried about cost of going to court as a witness

A couple years ago a neighbor of mine banged on my door begging me to let her in and call the cops. I obliged and she said that her boyfriend had tried to kill her. Ended up giving a statement to the cops even though I didn't hear or see the incident, just spoke to her after.

I was previously subpoenad about this case almost six months ago now. I went to court, showed up early, spent $50 on a ride as it would have taken me two hours each way on the bus and did my duty. Victim was about an hour late. Defendant was an hour and a half late and his lawyer ended up calling off the trial and i quote "because he has a toothache". I ended up wasting my entire morning sitting on my ass twiddling my thumbs outside the courtroom. Very infuriating as I was now down a morning and $50 for absolutely nothing.

I was told by the officers that they would try to see if they could get me off the hook for coming back for the next trial because I didn't actually see anything and I would only be relaying secondhand information. I was pissed off for wasting a day in court and having to completely re arrange my life for this but I figured that was the end of it.

I got a call this morning saying that I've been subpoenad again, and that the trial is in September.

Here's the issue: I work full time at minimum wage and will not have paid days off in September due to not being at the company long enough. My rent is about 80% of my income and I have less than $10 a month left over after paying rent bills and food. If I miss a day of work for this, that's the difference between me paying my car insurance so I can actually get to work or my groceries for two weeks.

I'm not even sure if I'll be living in the same town in September meaning I would then have to come up with the money for a hotel room (minimum $300 a night if I don't want bedbugs), TWO or THREE days of missed work because it's a long ass drive and who knows how long the trial will take, a cat sitter, hundreds of dollars of gasoline or plane/bus tickets and ubers, food, and almost 1k km on my car. This would be financially devestating for me.

My question is, what are my chances of the crown letting me go if I call and explain my situation? If I have to travel, will the above expenses be reimbursed to me and if so, how long does it take?

Competitive average for vet tech?

I've finished my undergrad (Bachelor's of Arts in Anthropology) with a 3.9 GPA but because my highschool marks were absolute dogwater I'm worried I wont be able to apply. I meet the admission requirement grades but definitely wouldn't be competitive. What grades did people get in with? I'm going to ask if they would accept any of my undergrad courses towards the admissions requirements but was wondering what the competitive average is. I got a job at an animal shelter after uni and have discovered that I want to work with animals for the rest of my life.

[Routine Help] Vanicream sensitive skin moisturizer stinging/burning? It was my last resort and now I feel so hopeless to managy my facial eczema/damaged barrier

I've noticed that the vanicream sensitive skin moisturizer has been stinging and burning upon application. I have no idea what to do, I've tried so many moisturizers and nothing has worked to help my facial eczema. I want to avoid steroids at all costs. Maybe someone here has some advice. I went to see a dermatologist but it was a six month wait and because I wasn't actively flaring up at the time she basically said I was full of shit. Also saw an allergist who said I was not allergic to anything despite me having been very allergic to dogs my entire life and still reacting to them to this day.

My skin constantly feels tight/dehydrated.

I use the ordinary hyaluronic acid serum but it seems to do nothing. Doesn't sting as much as others. I use Jojoba oil sometimes.

I can't seem to find a cleanser that doesn't make things worse so I usually just wipe my face down with a clean wet cloth in the evening. I use the dove beauty bar sometimes as it doesn't cause me much pain.

About three years ago I tried the supergoop sunscreen. It burned/stung around my eyes and mouth but I ignored it as I had no other sunscreen and needed it desperately. I think it damaged my skin barrier or something. For a while after this the eczema was only around my mouth and on my eyelids but in the last few months it has spread to cover my forehead and chin. Started out just as dry patches then turned into full blown weeping eczema over the course of a few months. I have to moisturize up to five times a day to keep my skin feeling comfortable and not flake VERY noticeably when it's flaring up. Things I have tried:

Bioderma Atoderm Lotion - worked great, no pain and skin felt hydrated but broke me out terribly

Bioderma Atoderm Gel - not moisturizing enough, skin felt tight and dry

Bioderma Atoderm Eye - was using this for my full face for a while, no pain and it worked well until my forehead started being constantly flaky no matter how much I put on. Bad eczema started shortly after.

Skinfix barrier+ line - on recommendation of my derm. Entire line still stung/burned and also left my skin feeling tight and dry

Skinfix eczema line -stung and burned

La roche posay cicaplast baume b5 - stung less but left my skin incredibly greasy. Broke out my cheeks, skin still felt dry and tight.

La roche posay Lipkar AP+Max - again left my forehead super greasy. I could literally see drops of oil sitting on top of my pores. Also stung/burned

Khiels barrier repair cream - worked for a week or so then also started to sting/burn. Had to reapply many times a day as skin kept flaking.

Cerave moisturizing lotion - stung/burned, had to reapply constantly as skin still felt dry and tight

Cerave moisturizing cream - stung/burned on patch test

Cerave intensive moisturizing lotion 5% urea - stung VERY badly

Cetaphil moisturizer - tried various types, all stung/burned

Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer - worked great once, second time and onwards stung/burned and now is very painful. My only theory was that I am sensitive to niacinamide, but even this moisturizer that I bought because it was niacinamide free is giving me grief.

The ordinary moisturizing factors with squalene - stung/burned very badly

Flexitol Face and Eyelid - works decently for keeping my eczema under control but it still stings/burns sometimes and doesn't moisturize much as its mostly a treatment.

Tallow - I sampled a tallow cream at the grocery store. Stung and left me feeling like a rotisserie chicken

I'm at such a loss as to what I should do or what ingredients are hurting my skin. I'm VERY opposed to steroids, I've tried them in the past and all they've done has been to give me premature wrinkles. If anyone has any advice or perhaps insight into what is irritating my skin I would be very thankful.

Feeling super weak at the gym recently

Not sure what's wrong with me! Has anyone else ever had times where they just feel so weak at the gym? I'm ovulating so I should be full of energy but I've had to cut three workouts short this week because I just felt so exhausted. Maybe it's the heat...

not being able to find employment is making me want to die. I feel like i've chosen a useless degree and don't know how I will survive until I can go back to school for something that will actually land me a job that pays the bills.

I just graduated university and have been unable to find work. I am running out of money, my rent is astronomical and I can't even get callbacks from minimum wage positions. I am genuinely considering just ending it all rather than dealing with this for the rest of my life. I've been thinking about pivoting into nursing (i just finished an anthropology degree) in order to have a qualification that will get me a job SOMEWHERE in the country but don't know how I will survive financially until I can begin schooling/while I am in school. I feel so hopeless. I was fired from two jobs within the span of a month and both refused to give me any reason. I feel like such a disappointment, a failure. Everyone else in my family is so successful and I am out here a waste of space and soon to be homeless and have to give up my cat (my only reason for living) because I'm such a failure. I've submitted so many applications, spent so many hours tailoring my resume to meet ATS systems and have heard practically nothing. I don't know what to do. I don't know anyone that could get me a job, I don't have any connections. I can't afford to just volunteer somewhere to make those connections. I'm screwed. Is there ANYTHING I can do or am I just a lost cause?

[2 Years of Experience, Unemployed, Youth Public Educator, Canada]

I am hoping that someone could look through this job description and let me know how I can improve my resume. Also, I really want to include my experience presenting a poster at my University's Research and Scholarship days as it involved creating and delivering a presentation in public, but I am not sure where to put that in. I am hoping to get this specific job, it's kind of a dream position for me, and I am worried that if my resume isn't perfect I will be looked over despite being highly qualified. I'm a recent grad, but I think my education is incredibly relevant to this role. This is the link to the job posting - I cleared this with the mods ahead of time! https://www.sace.ca/were-hiring-youth-public-educators/

Am I screwing myself over by trying to get a realistic "backup" career before pursuing grad school?

TLDR: If I take a pivot from anthropology to get myself a "safety net" career in nursing, am I totally cooked in terms of ever getting a job in academia? I have heard mixed messages.

As the title says. I'm a recent grad who just finished my undergrad with a 3.9 in my last few semesters. I really, really want to go to grad school and pursue academic anth, but I have been told by many people, both on and off this subreddit, that the chances of actually landing a stable job in academia are INCREDIBLY slim. I've accepted that - I don't come from a wealthy family and my partner doesn't make enough money to support me, so I would have to take out massive loans in order to even pay for cost of living, never mind tuition. I don't want to graduate from a phd and be stuck in an endless loop of applying for jobs and getting rejected - I'm struggling enough with that right now and I honestly can see why people go insane when they're searching for employment. Then I imagine doing it with 100k in student loans and get even more stressed. I need something that will be a solid career path if I can't get into academia, or to hold me over while I'm searching and building connections. I've been trying to get into CRM since I graduated with no luck since I didn't have the privilege of doing a field school. I know that's the most common option - work all summer in CRM to make enough for the next year's COL - but it looks like that may not be an option for me. In comes my idea.

I've been thinking of diverting my plans by a bit in order to pursue nursing. It's the only career I can think of that would:

A) make me enough money to pay off my current loans in a short amount of time without another four years of school

B) be a job I can do casually or part time and still make enough money to cover my half of the bills while in grad school/doing a phd/doing sessional instructing while I try to find a permanent job in academia. The flexibility of nursing has the potential to be unmatched.

C) be something I can see myself doing if academia doesn't work out, or if the economy tanks even further and budgets for anthropology are cut. There's options for higher education and ongoing learning, a lot of career mobility and meets a lot of my other needs.

So I ask, am I completely screwing myself out of a career in academia if I take a break to build myself a backup plan? I've heard that, in order to succeed in acadmic anth, you have to essentially go from undergrad straight into grad school and phd, but I also had a professor who had a completely seperate career as a police officer before pursuing anth. Mixed messages. I'm just curious to know if there's anyone else out there who was in a similar situation and still managed to pursue a career in academia. If I can't, it's okay, I would be happy doing grad school and beyond just to fufill my own life goals, but I thought it can't hurt to ask LOL.

I think my cat would be better off with someone else

i think my cat would be better off living with someone else, maybe my parents or literally anybody but me. For so long she was the only reason i lived but now i think maybe i should give her to my parents or to someone else and just let go. I got fired from two jobs within a month after finishing university and can't find anything else that will pay the bills. she deserves someone who can hold down a job and look after her properly. i feel like such a failure and a disappointment compared to everyone around me and i think shes starting to sense that too. i used to think she would be sad if i was gone but now i know she will be fine, she'll get over it and be happy with people who deserve her. she won't miss me. she loves my boyfriend more than me and i think she wants me to die too. i think she and everyone around me would be better off if i was gone, not burdening them with my failure and my problems and my financial instability.

Person who agreed to be my reference has seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. What do I do?

An old supervisor/friend of mine agreed to be used as a reference when I was applying for jobs. She has now seemingly vanished off the face of the earth. I can't get into contact with her to get her to check her email for the form.

I REALLY need this job. Do I email the HR people and say "if you are having trouble contacting xyz, here is the information of an alternative reference" or something like that? Am I fucked? Will this keep me from getting the job?

I am worried about my career

I don't even know if I believe in god, so this is a long shot for me, but I don't know what else to do.

I hate my current job. It makes me physically ill from stress and I need out. I have an employer checking my references at a different place, but I am terrified that it won't work out and that I'll be stuck at this job that makes me want to die.

If people could please pray that I get this job, I would be very grateful.

Which of these research ideas would be the most employable in Canadian academia?

I recently finished a BA in Anth, and am interested in pursing a Master's in a few years, but am a bit stuck on how to pick a research question and how to narrow it down to some of the weirdly hyperspecific things I have seen in academic supervisor profiles.

I have multiple areas of interest, but was curious as to which would be the most likely to land me a job in academia, either as a researcher or (in approx a billion years) a tenured teaching position. I have been told that my #1 interest, medieval europe, is very oversaturated and unlikely to get me a job in Canada, so I've decided to leave that one as a hobby interest for now and seriously pursue other topics. If anyone has insight into what the academic world would favour, I would be much appreciated. Most of my interest areas include feminist anthropology or the anthropology of childhood.

  1. Medical Anth: I've been considering going into nursing in order to pay off my student debt before doing a Master's (and work a bit while in school/waiting to find full time work), and I feel that it would lead to a natural transition to Medical Anthropology. I am interested in the social bonds/medical knowledge formed by chronically ill children in long-term hospital settings, period poverty, and the impacts of poor women's healthcare in refugee/conflict zones.

  2. Cultural Anth: The experiences of girlhood and female responsibility among immigrant/refugee families. Eldest daughters are so often left to bear the brunt of, well, everything, and I haven't seen many studies done into this area.

  3. Archaeology. This one is a bit of a stretch, and not sure how I could go about doing this, but the archaeology of girlhood or childhood (possibly in the Canadian East Coast, other parts of North America, Africa or Iron Age Europe).

If anyone knows of people who study similar topics in Canada, that would also be much appreciated! I plan on asking some of my professors, but it's a pretty tiny faculty so I thought I would try to get some outside perspectives.

How do academics take such broad topics like feminist or childhood anthropology and turn it into specific research questions?

Considering going into nursing in order to have a fallback plan for my needle in a haystack dream job.

Bit of a background - I have just finished my BA in Anthropology and am considering my options for the future. I have three options, as far as I am aware at the moment.

My dream is to work in Anthropology/heritage of some kind. I have been looking at careers in artifact conservation, museum curation or academia. The only caveat is that I do not really have any employment options that would pay me enough to get through school, or that I could use as a backup while looking for work in these areas. It is notoriously difficult to get jobs in any of these fields, and it could possibly take me years of working casual even with a PhD to get my foot in the door. Casual work in these positions is not enough to pay the bills. I've seen postings that require a master's that only offer minumum wage...

I have been considering this as a possible plan, and was wondering if anyone had any insight:

I am thinking of taking an after degree nursing program (2yrs), working for a couple years to pay off as much of my student debt as I can and then applying for a master's program in Anthropolgy, potentially using my experience to go into medical anthropology studying the social impacts of chronic illness on children, period poverty or the social realities of women's health for refugees.

Why am I thinking nursing?

  1. Pay. If I work nights, weekends or holidays, I would be able to pay my bills while doing a master's working ~20hrs a week. With FT, I would be able to pay off my student loans relatively quickly while also saving for further education.

  2. Continuing Education. If anthropology just never ends up working out, I can see myself enjoying nursing as there is nearly infinite upwards trajectory - NP, Nurse Midwife, management, nursing instructor, home care, etc. There really isn't much of a ceiling.

  3. Long term fulfullment. I don't want a "normal" job - I have this weird complex where I have to prove that I'm capable of doing something that most people can't.

Has anyone done anything similar? I.e. picking up a well paying, practical job in order to meet your long term goals. If I nursed for a few years, I could save up money to pursue my dreams and would have a fallback plan if they don't work out/take a long time to come to fruition.

Teachers in the Maritimes, do you enjoy your job?

I am considering pursuing teaching after a four year BA in Anthropology. Right now, I live in Alberta (ew) and all of my old teachers that I've spoken to about my potential career choice have told me to stay far, far away from teaching here.

I've always dreamed of going back to the maritimes, specifically NS or PEI. I was born in NB, but I've always felt drawn to the water and the slower pace of life out east. The other option is BC, but that's for a different post!

I should add that I want to teach elementary, ideally kinder or grades 4-6, but am interested in hearing about highschool as well, as I would be interested in teaching English or History. History is not offered as a class in AB, unless your school offers it as an elective. Not sure how it works in the maritimes.

So, teachers in the maritimes, how do you like it?

Do you get stipends to buy supplies for your classroom, or does it come out of pocket? Are the wages enough to buy a home (doesn't matter where, really)? Work life balance? Cost of living? Class sizes and supports? What is the union like in your area? Benefits and retirement options?

Academic anthropologists: would you recommend going into the field at this point in time?

I am a recent BA Anth grad and am seriously considering my future. I really, really want to go either into cultural anth or archaeology academically, but am concerned about a few things and was hoping some other academics may have some guidance.

  1. I can't think of a research question. Everything that I am super interested in (medieval/tudor europe, girlhood, pets) has been studied to death and I can't imagine being able to get funding for such projects, never mind being able to write a thesis. How am I supposed to write a thesis, or even apply for MA and PHD programs if I can't think of a question? I am struggling to find anyone at Canadian universities who studies medieval europe, but I can't afford to go to school abroad at this point. Does my advisor have to study exactly what I'm interested in? If for example, I wanted to study use wear patterns on weapon grave goods, or the experiences of girlhood among refugee families, what kind of areas of interest would I be looking for in an advisor?

  2. I am concerned about finances. I've been told by my profs that you can't really work (heaven forbid full time) while you're in school as the courseload is too demanding. That being said, Canada has a very high cost of living, especially in towns with universities, and I cannot rely on family or a spouse to financially support me and have been told that TA positions would likely not cover rent and bills. How do you pay living expenses while doing research for a university? Do you allocate part of your project funding towards a salary for yourself, or are you paid a salary by the university you work for?

  3. What is the job market like for academics? I know it isn't the same as traditional job postings, but I don't see many positions online for researchers or even profs and I worry about being left with crippling debt after say, a PHD and being forced to work minimum wage because there just aren't any jobs. The economy is not looking good for arts and museums, and I worry that cuts to heritage budgets in the country mean that university funding will also dry up. In the same vein, I know it can take a very long time to get a tenured teaching position and I don't know if I have the gumption to be living paycheck to paycheck until I'm like, 40 and can even think about tenure.

I love anthropology and want to follow my heart, but I also want to be realistic and not rely on the charity of family to get by. I'm considering giving up on this dream and going to after degree teachers school or nursing school so I can at least have a stable career if I want to go back to do anth later when the economy is more secure. I want to have kids someday, I want to be able to save for retirement, I want to be able to afford to have hobbies and fun. I want to be able to support my parents when they are old.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

9-5 options as a new grad in Canada?

I'm considering going into nursing for a multitude of reasons. In Canada (or at least in Alberta where I live) full time nursing jobs I've seen are 4 on (2d2n) 4 off. I work shift work right now (3on3off) and it's eating me alive - I don't think I would be able to cope with nights thrown in as well. I hate having several days where I basically can't do anything but work. I miss going to the gym multiple times a week, having a real sit down dinner and seeing my friends more than once a month when our schedules align. I also want to have kids and that schedule is not conducive to children's schedules.

I want to work in public health (especially with pregnancy care), but I've heard it's next to impossible for new grads to get jobs there since they go for people with decades of experience in acute care. I'd also love to work somewhere like an abortion or sexual health clinic - after my own abortion, the nurses were so kind and made such a huge difference in my experience. I'd be honoured to be able to do that for others. I hear Americans talk about school nursing as well, but from what I understand, that isn't really an option in Canada.

Is it possible to get a 9-5 job as a new grad nurse? Which specialties or jobs should I be looking into? Is this even possible, or will I have to work in a hospital for a few years first? Been considering doing LTC and then going into home hospice or something as I know LTC is usually 9-5/8-4 etc.

I am looking to apply in December or January to the After Degree Nursing program, and am curious when other people took their Casper test. Marks for prerequisites are due June 15th (Probably to allow for UofA spring semester courses to be completed). Some Casper test dates are open now, but none for UofA. When did you all book the test? When were dates released? I want to book it ASAP.

Also, how fast do NURS 140/150 fill up? Looking to take them in the winter semester 2027 alongside the microbiology course. Should I apply and register now? Or will I be okay to wait til closer to the winter semester application? I'm not sure when you guys do winter semester registration.

911 supply is way more than i can afford right now. Starting work as a homeless outreach worker and need pants that can stand up to high heat washing. Got a pair of old army issue combat pants here when I was an Air Cadet and wondered if there's anything like this store in town, or if I need to make a trip up to Edmonton.
