The festival of Gajon (Chorok) in Hooghly, Bengal 1665 CE. As depicted by Hendrik van Schuylenburgh, a painter under the employment of the Dutch East India Company
The Gajon and Chorok are ancient Bengali Folk festivals. The origin of the festival or how did it start remains unknown till this date. The festivals began as pre-harvest, agro-based fertility rituals. Lower-caste peasant communities performed severe physical penance to invoke the Sun and Rain gods for a bountiful crop harvest.
One of the earliest recorded family patronages of the festival dates back to 1485 CE by the family of King Sundaranand Tagore
Hendrik van Schuylenburgh (c. 1620–1689) was a Dutch landscape painter and art dealer based out of Middelburg, Zeeland.
He disappeared from Middelburg guild records between 1661 and 1668, indicating he traveled to Asia to work directly for the Dutch East India Company.
During those years he painted the masterpiece of the Bengali Folk festival and later on it was named as "Hook Swinging Festival during the British colonial era by british administrators
