So … is Donny Cates ever coming back?

I’ve tried to keep up on all his updates - from the personal issues pre-accident to the recovery journey post-accident and injury. I was under the impression that, through all the ups and downs, he was working on getting something going with Marvel again or then something on the independent side of things.

I was confident we’d hear something with the Ultimate universe since he had been an architect for its early plans, or maybe something with Spawn since he’s always been such a fan, or then something with Venom or Midnight since he always leaned into the darker side of Marvel. But for years now it’s been crickets.

I know he can’t reboot Vanish since Ryan Stegman is busy. And I’m not sure if DC would have something for him with Absolute or All In.

Truthfully, he was a huge reason I got into comics as an adult and his writing is some of my favorite. Loved his Venom, Thanos Wins, Silver Surfer, smashtronaut Hulk, herald Thor, all of it. It was a blast! Hope he’s back soon… somehow!

What’s next for Dan Mora?

Dan Mora has gradually been stepping away from handling multiple ongoings and miniseries. With World’s Finest he’s been off for awhile, he’s stepping off Superman (at least for the Zod arc) with issue #41 and #42, and after handling DC KO’s Knightfight it seems he doesn’t have another miniseries he’s handling.

As far as I know, he’s doing a few variant covers (Legion of Super-Heroes, Batman, Detective Comics, Teen Titans, Poison Ivy) but otherwise his back half of 2026 is only Justice League Unlimited.

Will JLU be his only ongoing for the foreseeable future? Will he go back to Superman? Will he go to some other character or project? What do you think?

Just finished chapter 6 of the first book and I’m blown away by how much better it is than Operation Bounce House?

I’ve heard a LOT of hype for the Dungeon Crawler Carl series but I’m a relatively new book reader. Last year I went through all of the Red Rising Saga and my goal this year was to get through Dungeon Crawler Carl.

At the start of the year I saw that Operation Bounce House was coming out and figured it could be fun to get a taste for Matt Dinniman’s writing style before diving into this series.

I … enjoyed it! But was a bit disappointed when I had seen so much love and praise for DCC. I was worried I wouldn’t end up enjoying DCC and kind of postponed by binge read of the series. Ended up jumping to Project Hail Mary for that movie and the all of Hunger Games to prepare for Sunrise on the Reaping. Both very good reading journeys!

Anyways. Now for my summer reading I’m finally diving into DCC and phew, what a relief and a surprise! This first book - only six chapters in - is way, way, way better. Why couldn’t Operation Bounce House have been this fun?! It feels like OBH was trying to be more earnest or grounded or something. This is wacky and fun and what I expected out of a gaming pop culture nerd novel.

Excited to keep reading and I’m sorry my hype had to be at the expense of Operation Bounce House. Like I said, I enjoyed it - but this is more my speed.

That’s a wrap on all Hunger Games books! Other than a detour in May - that’s fast reading for a book newbie like me.

My wife and I blasted through the trilogy in April. She’s a fast and consistent book reader so I had to keep up. She then went through Ballad very quickly but I got side-tracked with Star Wars in May (lol) and since she finished the book without me my motivation dropped a bit. But then I picked it back up, loved it (it’s my favorite) and that momentum propelled me through Sunrise in a week.

Overall I’d rank it as Ballad as my favorite, the trilogy all tied in the middle (love the first for being the first, Catching Fire is such a great sequel, Mockingjay really sticks the landing), and then Sunrise is my least favorite.

Ballad and Hunger Games were my least favorite movies - ironic given that they’re my favorites from the books. I imagine Sunrise will be my favorite movie. Right now my favorite of the movies is Catching Fire.

Time to pivot to something wild like Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Quick question about the “plan” in Sunrise on The Reaping…

I just finished Chapter 16 and Haymitch is heading north to carry out the plan from Beetee to blow up the arena. It’s my understanding that he has this coordinated plan to bomb a tunnel and “flood the brain” of the arena? To be honest, I’m somehow a bit fuzzy on the exact details of what they want to accomplish - but I get the idea that the goal is to sabotage the Games.

What confuses me is … what do they think this will accomplish? Is it really just the short-term destruction of this Quarter Quell to send a message to the Capitol? Just a quick bit of payback from Beetee?

Because surely they know that whatever destruction they bring the Capitol can just repair, right? And Haymitch has to know the Gamemakers are watching and he won’t survive any sabotage plan?

Just seems like a suicide mission that won’t even accomplish much for Haymitch? Apologies if I’m missing how high the stakes are or how important the plan is. Maybe my mind wandered during a crucial Beetee line.

Thanks!
