Look at the map UP at 2,038, Bihar at 1,078, way out ahead of everyone else. And yeah, it's easy to look at that and think "oh this is something which is only prevalent in North india." But the reality is completely different.

Section 304B is a law which criminalizes causing (or contributing to) a woman's death through dowry-related cruelty but there's a catch in this, the institution counts it as a "dowry death" if the woman died within 7 years of marriage AND there's proof of harassment "soon before death." This clause itself is flawed to the core because If a woman has been harassed by the in-laws for years but just before her death everything is calm and the harassment is all psychological this law doesn't help at all just because there's no proof just before her death and the perpetrators walk freely without any consequences.

It's so depressing that when a woman dies, it's brushed aside as "kitchen accident." Or it's filed as suicide blaming the victims mental health instead. Or the woman's family gets pressured to be paid off, or sometimes they get worn down because of the judicial delays done by the perpetrators and their lawyers deliberately.

None of that shows up in this map and this happens A LOT . The map only shows what made it through all of that.

And the maddening part is the law isn't even new. Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Section 304B, exists since 1986 . Education + a job = independence. That's it, that's the whole equation some men are shit scared of. A woman who earns her own money doesn't need to stay if things go wrong in the marriage, She can leave whenever and that exit is exactly what keeps an abusive marriage from going on, because the moment a woman is fully financially dependent on her husband, the power balance is gone. She can be shouted at, controlled, manipulated, hit even, and still has to "adjust" because she has nothing to depend on and her family always won't be kind to look after her.

And honestly what scares me more is what I heard from people I know and their stories about how men in their families are actively looking for a girl who's "willing to leave her job after marriage." Like it's a plus point. Not "she's smart" or "she's kind," but "she should adjust, she should quit her job, she should be available full time for the house." So, I was looking for some fantasy shows and I started vox machina literally on a whim without knowing anything about D&D and critical role as a whole I only heard about D&D in stranger things and God I was blown away, it's so amazing.
