Homeless population boom Lankershim/Vineland

I know this isn't new, and has been an issue since 2020, but the past year has been super bad with the homeless population by the Petco/Raising Canes on Lankershim. They all go to that NoHo Home Alliance service at the church on Camarillo.

The past year the boom in homeless here has been crazy. I don't feel safe walking in my neighborhood anymore. I've been chased, screamed at, and had items thrown at me. I find needles and waste everywhere. Citizen is constantly alerting for someone being assaulted in this area.

I want to hear your thoughts and experiences. Any suggestions on what we can do to help our community with this? I'm not about opposing assistance for those in need. Rather, I want to find a solution that protects vulnerable individuals while also ensuring that we can safely enjoy our neighborhood.

No vision change - Dizziness with new glasses normal?

I went to update vision rx so I could replace glasses (mine broke after 4 years). They said vision was still the same (+1.75), but my astigmatism degree changed a decent amount. New glasses arrived and I am feeling dizzy and things seem a little blurrier. Is this normal until I adjust? I know dizziness with new glasses is normal, but is the diminished clearness in text normal when adjusting? First time with a new RX for astigmatism. OD 157 changed to 145, OS 180 to 010.

TYIA for your insight!

iCloud blocking emails from contacts I talk to often

iCloud keeps blocking emails from senders I have talked to frequently for years (Error 554 5.7.1). This has just started in the last 2 weeks. Email not even going to spam or trash. Straight blocked. (But emailers I select block on still get through to spam or trash folder, go figure.)

But I don't know what to do. I run a business and can't have buyer or client emails getting blocked. They are in my contact list. Not blocked. My icloud email is the only one bouncing back for them. iCloud storage isn't full. The senders are legit businesses sending ACH documents or invoices. Nothing weird with their signatures, same they have used for years.

What is going on 😞

How long does substantial pain last?

Friend had TKR on left knee in late March. They are complaining that they are still in substantial pain. Everything I have read/heard from providers and nurses is 2-4 weeks of moderate to substantial pain, after this its dull/tolerable pain for up to 6 months as it continues to heal. Their doc and nurse are saying it looks fine as well.

Meds or not

My doc has been wanting me to go on meds for a few years now, but I don’t want them. I don’t feel depressed just because or don’t know a cause. I know my cause and feel it’s situational.

I’ve seen the side effects and want nothing to do with them. I’ve seen people trying to get off of them and that struggle. I was an MA for a decade.

Am I wrong to continue to decline? I’ve never thought of hurting myself or others. I’m just sad and anxious, with a loss of interest in doing things because life honestly sucks.

The stress of the world with our current politicians, everyone going into massive debt, not being able to afford the most basic necessities, needing medical treatment but I can’t afford it - even though I pay $500/mo for insurance that eats up 15% of my income pre tax… how is anyone doing okay mentally these days?!?!

Update on spouse who was unimpressed with Firefly

Everything is shiny here! He stuck with it and watched it all. Although he still isn’t blown away, he has a full appreciation of the show now. I’m going to let it sit with him for a few days now, let him research all his questions. I think once he’s had time to analyze everything, he’ll be one of us ;)

I let him read through the comments on the previous post. Thank you everyone, it kept him going. “If after all these years the fans are still this vocal about it, there has to be something there.”

Sharing Firefly with significant other, but he’s unimpressed

My significant and I love almost all the same things. He knows my love of Firefly, and sees all the references on shows we love, like Big Bang Theory. I’ve tried to get him to watch it for years, and he finally asked to watch it. Yay!

2 episodes in and he’s not enjoying it at all. Kinda breaks my heart. He keeps asking questions, I try to answer without giving things away. I am begging that he just watches it through, and then ask questions. He doesn’t like that the story isn’t super in depth. Yet.

I keep explaining, just watch and ask questions after. Enjoy the adventure. I’m enjoying the re-watch, but he’s making it difficult by asking so many questions in the middle of an episode instead of just watching! Dunno if I can make it through the series with him…

Edit: I didn’t force him to watch or guilt him into it. I don’t talk about it really unless someone brings it up, asks, or I see a reference on it. He saw my art, autographs, and memorabilia. Always told him, I’m happy to watch it with him, but zero obligation. He wanted to watch it.

I offered movie first. Explained that many found their love of Firefly by starting with the film first. He saw it when it came out, but doesn’t remember it. But he chose series first.

And he wants to push through it all. Hoping he starts to see what we all see 🤞🏻✨

LA programs and going back after being out of school for 10 years.

I was an MA for 10 years, and was in demand by all providers at our practice. They encouraged me to go back to school to get my RN. I got through all my pre-reqs in WA state, 3.8 gpa while working full-time. Had to wait 3 months for the next application cycle.

The last 2 quarters at school, new management took over the clinic. I saw staff who had been there forever being let go for absolutely false and terrible reasons. Then it happened to me. The ptsd and depression from that time period really hit me hard. I postponed applying and decided to wait until I was mentally in a better place.

Moved to CA for my husband’s job, went to apply and found I would have to repeat a lot of pre-reqs. Quarter vs semester based credits. I didn’t have enough credit hours for CA… I was heartbroken.

Fast forward, it’s been 10 years. Been working jobs here and there, but I miss the medical field and am tossing around the idea of going back for my RN. Looking at community and its lotto and could take me a few years to get in. I’m 40 now, I want to just get it done.

- Am I foolish for wanting to go back?
- Is there a good school near Burbank to get my RN without a crazy waitlist?

I’ve looked at nclex pass rates for programs around me, but really want local opinions on schools.

I have a job, but am interviewing for a new job.

Hi! TYIA for your thoughts on this.

I have worked a WFH job for 6 years. I like it, but in 6 years there has been no increase in wage, no adding to vacation time, I have to pay for half of my health insurance costs, and no 401k. I was making commission, but with the film industry being non-existent, so are my commissions now... Financially sinking further into debt...

I have stayed because I love the people I work with, I get to WFH, and holidays off. So there is some balance to the above issues.

I have started interviewing for part time jobs to supplement my income, but a place liked me so much - they want to hire me full-time immediately. Benefits, raise of a couple of bucks per hour ($4), room for advancement, 30 minute commute each way.

I don't know what to do. The full-time job looks super appealing, but fuel costs and commuting. And I don't want to leave my team high and dry! Last thing I would want to do...

Birth Control & Cholesterol

I’m a 39yo F, 130lbs, 5’8”, been dealing with high cholesterol and LDL.

Cholesterol 240
Tri 145
HDL 70
LDL 145

I exercise regularly, never smoked, drinking is minimal, eat healthy, rarely go out, nothing fried.

I can’t get my cholesterol and LDL down. I was reading through other articles and stumbled on one that said birth control with estrogen can significantly increase these levels. It has me curious if I’m one of those.

Of course there is a but though. I’m on estrogen pill for other problems. Without it, I have a ton of medical issues and constant pain… I can’t do IUD either :(

I’m posting this to A) see if anyone has any recommendations for options to try. And B) for others that may not know that a lot of birth control causes a massive increase in cholesterol, tri, and HDL! Craziness.

What are your thoughts on Marsha Fuerst School of nursing in Glendale, CA? I have read mixed reviews. Thinking about going for my ADN there, maybe BSN as well.
