Is this something one should file an auto insurance claim for?

I posted in an auto repair channel about my friend banging the door of his car against my garage frame as we were looking for DIY options to make it look better. A couple of comments, however, mentioned getting a new door through insurance. Neither of had even contemplated that as an option. For context: my power had gone out and so it was very dark and he was distracted from a family emergency he needed to attend to, so he started driving out of my garage with his front door fully open, which banged against my garage door's metal frame. He made this bent/dent to his car and my garage frame is dented. I am okay with it since it's fully operational. Is this something for him to file a claim over, though? Would that inevitably increase his premium? Is this something I should file a claim for from my home insurance at all? I know you can't predict by how much but any guidance on how to choose when to/not to file and from which type policy? Ideally he'd need a new door and I'd need my frame repaired. In case it helps, he has StateFarm car and I have StateFarm home insurance.

TTMIK Bootcamp: any experinces?

Hi all! I did not find a thread on this, apologies if I missed. TTMIK started doing these 6-week beginner bootcamps which goes through Levels 1 + 2. I've been stuck mid-way through Level 1 so many times and I am wondering if this may be an option to help me push past it. Any insight from people who may have participated in one of these bootcamps?

Is there a DIY fix for this dent?

My friend got distracted and drove back out of the garage with the driver door fully open (don't ask!) which hit the garage door metal frame. We saw the dent repair kits online but they seem to best serve when you have a flat surface circling the whole dent to pull with suction. Any options here that we may be able to finagle at home? Thanks for any tips

What is "Edit Home" for

I am not understanding what this is for. From the device home page, if you hit the device name, there is a menu with Device Share, Edit Home, Rename, Remove device. This is the "Edit Home" option pop-up. What are these two options? Why can't you add / modify anything? I clicked Living room hoping it'd give me more options after but nope - now it says "Living room" above my device name (it lives in the Laundry room, if that matters). Any idea? Couldn't find this online

How do I fix this in the map?

I have several floor-to-ceiling window walls. I fixed the robot from bumping into it by creating virtual walls, but I'd like to see the map "finalized" and not these lookout incomplete projections. Is there a way to do this? I saw online that I can pull the shades down where I have them (duh) but I don't see to find a way to ask the robot to go finish mapping specific portions (vs re-mapping the whole house). I thought running cleaning cycles in these rooms would do the trick, but it hasn't changed the floorplans.

How wet is too wet for hardwood?

I got an L60 Ultra PE and I'm fairly impressed after first use. I have mostly hardwood floors and wondering what custom level of "mop wetness" I should use for hardwood. Is moist fairly safe? Should I stay below it? I ran in between slightly dry and moist and it seems to dry very quickly in a way that I don't think it'll damage the wood but also if there's wiggle room for more wetness, I'd take it (some spots in the kitchen needed a second pass manually)

Tips for day 1 with Dreame?

Pulled the trigger on a DREAME L60 Ultra PE and it's being delivered tomorrow. I presume the app will guide me through it, but here to see if there is anything I should do as I deploy this. Should I try to remove as much as I can from the floors when I let the robot map the floor plan or leave stuff as it would be during everyday. For example, stools at the kitchen counter, they would prevent the robovac from getting all the way to the kitchen island edge, but that's how we would leave it on days when it's doing cleaning anyway.

Anything I should NOT do to avoid F-ups down the road?

Any insight welcome. I was looking for a post like this but couldn't find any, apologies if I missed it.

Score without a percentile

Apologies if this has been discussed, could not find a thread on this. Got a (not so great) score on the resubmission of an R21 but there is no percentile associated with it. It's been a week now, so I don't think one is coming. Other than waiting for the SS to see if there is one there, does this mean anything? I will ask PO on Monday but anxiety is kicking in! 😞

Rant: 6-7 gesturing during boat

Absolutely appalled by the number of adults who spend their ENTIRE Seine cruise doing the "6-7" arm motion (you know, like that juggling balls trend that emerged out of nowhere, and I thought had died down). This one duo of women did it non-stop for an hour. Every single minute, without exception. They did not even stop when the Eiffel Tower was magically sparkling for 5 minutes at 11pm. Many people in boats passing by "replied" and others on the edge of the Seine. Not kids, not teenagers, not young adults. People well into their mid 30s. I never felt more like a Debby Downer but good lord they looked like such absolute idiots. Am I just boring and a party pooper? It was so distracting! /rantover

Amazon Prime Day deals worth looking into for pool-related stuff?

Mods, please delete if not allowed. Just wondering if there are pool-related items that may be worth looking at on Amazon Prime Day if truly discounted (fully recognizing a lot of the deals are fake and not really subjected to a price decrease relative to other times of the year). I'm thinking from equipment, to must-have maintenance, to leisure stuff (e.g. pool floaters).

London tipping

I was in London last week and noticed every restaurant we went to had a Service Fee with variable % from 10, 12.5, to 13 IIRC. Is this their version of a forced tip? Were they doing that because we're obviously tourists? They were then asking for more tip on the pay machine, which I refused to add.

Pool consequences for prolonged power loss

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the electric company has shut down the power to our property (if you're curious, they messed something up in their system and somehow we "don't have an active account with them" but have had electricity running for 5 weeks since taking over this property). It'll be at least 48 hours of no power at all before I can even get a hold of a human to have them fix it but they said it could take another 48 hours after that. I am terrified at the thought of our pool being stationary for 4 days (let alone our house getting continuing to get hot as hell). Salt cell pool, ~19K gallon, all chemistries well within range prior to power disconnection. No pool cover. What is our pool's fate here? Anything I should keep in mind/do when power is restored? I was not expecting to get thrown this curveball our way this soon after getting a house with a pool. Trying to keep my cool as I've seen disgusting pools get salvaged here but good lord I am freaking out

Please explain my Metro faux pas

Managed to get around everywhere walking for the past few days but today, between the blisters in my feet and the impossible heat, and the long distance to travel (Marche aux Puces!) I finally got on the metro. As I exited my station, I saw a bunch of people tapping their card against a small machine which was not a fare gate. I think it said "je reviens, je [something]". Impulsively, I tapped mine too. I had purchased 2 tickets and I had only used one, but when I went to tap on my way back, I was out of tickets!! So whatever that machine is, it consumed an additional ticket :/ - can someone explain? I couldn't find this online, and I can't remember the exact phrase shown on the screen, other than the je X, je Y structure.

Am I understanding correctly I will be able to load my Navigo simple card with a RER train to CDG if it's clear of any single ride tickets? Or is the rule that if I *ever* used the card for Metro that I can't use it to load airport rides? Maybe the machine is for that?

Should i DIY tighten this?

I was troubleshooting some stuff today (separate post) and noticed that the area under this pump was wet while everything else was dry. As I made the pump kick in when activating a vanishing edge waterfall feature we have, I noticed water was leaking around that plastic where the red arrow is. Not a lot, but you could clearly see it pooling first, then dripping. The plastic says "hand tighten only" but i tried and it's not moving. I have a wrench for this but I am scared to use it on it, especially since the pipe that comes out of it says "pool drain" (see second pic for equipment context). Thoughts? Total newbie here for real. Thanks!

Irrigation vs. pool repair people: who should deal with this

The autofill in our pool has not been working and allegedly it's due to a pipe that burst under this green cover during winterization of the sprinkler system by the prior owners. The irrigation company came out and said the irrigation pipe is fine (apparently it's hidden under there too, towards the left on my first picture, not seen from this angle or to my naked eye but I saw the guy putting his hand deep in there) - but when they open the valve for this visible one on the right, it starts bursting with water. They want the pool people to fix it. I've had 3 pool companies come out, none of them actually open the valve to confirm and assess, they just say the autofill sensor is working fine, if it's a pipe issue, they'd rather the sprinkler people do it. The last one that came also opened the green cover and left these cables exposed outside (second picture), not sure if I should tuck them in?

Finger pointing and ping-ponging between "experts" so I figured I'd come here to get other people's thoughts. I haven't brought out an alternative irrigation repair team yet but if that may be the right way to go, I'll happily do that. Looking for some community wisdom. Thanks

EDIT: Edit to add that the sprinkler system is working fine (irrigation company tested this). It seems (from what I understood) that this pipe's only job is to feed the autofill for the pool. They just both live under the same hood.

Critters in catch basin and pool

Seeking advice for these animals but also for my mental sanity!

Purchased a house with a gorgeous pool with a vanishing edge that feeds into a catch basin (I have since come to learn this can be a major PITA, ha!). Totally new to this world, first day after home purchase, clean. Second day, 3 dead rodents overnight (quite a rowdy night, it seems, mating season gone wild). A couple of weeks went by uneventfully, then had two more mice overnight, and thankfully nothing since. But, I've since made it a habit to go check the basin first thing when I wake up. I had purchased a "critter ramp" from Amazon after the first episode which I returned because we were not getting anything in the pool itself and I figured, if we were, they would climb the "downslope" that goes from the pool to the catch basin and fall there (image #2), and unfortunately the rescue ramp models they make seem to be too short to work for the catch basin given the depth of the water relative to the edge.

We are leaving town on vaca soon and I don't want to be obsessing over this. I know worst case scenario we shock the pool, but I'd rather not have a decomposing animal in the water for a week. To make matters worse, today I saw a turtle in the pool and she clearly could not get out, so I'm thinking 1) I will get the ramps again to leave in the main pool area just in case for when we're out of town; but 2) any other ideas on how to provide a rescue ladder or equivalent for critters that fall in the catch basin. The depth to the border fluctuates throughout the day, but it's about 16-34 inches from the edge to the surface of the water there. Any ideas/tips?

Trying to understand my new house's setup

Moved into a new place that has some complex wiring and I am at a total loss trying to understand this eero set up. First, I now understand that it seems to hijack the Wifi router, which becomes invisible, and I can only see the eero network. My connection isn't the most stable, and it's driving me a bit insane, because I can't troubleshoot: do I blame AT&T for unsteady Wifi (which I can't even test) or do I blame these eero devices.

From the app it seems like the base main unit is an eero Pro B010001, living in the utility room in the basement and connected to the modem, then there is another eero Pro B010001 LAN-wired in the Pantry on the main floor, and an eero J010011 which connects via Wifi. This latter one sits right on my desk, and yet the connection on my laptop sitting right next to it is obviously unstable, e.g. laggy on Zoom, completely dropping Teams meetings. It's kind of embarrassing. It's one floor up between the pantry and the office but the distance isn't that big.

I came from a 3-floor townhouse with an office at the very top and an identical AT&T router in a utility closet three floors down without any repeaters of any sort that worked perfectly fine, no drops. I can't even realize how to troubleshoot this system here and also nervous about bringing it all offline since so many things connect to this network (pool, Russound system, security cameras, etc). Devices are running eeroOS v7.14.1-137 and I haven't had the guts to push this v7.15.0-9714 in case it makes things even worse. Any help/insight/recs more than welcome!

Help me understand my pool

New to pools and this one has some extra challenges, at least for this rookie.

Our main pool is ~18.5K gallons and it has a vanishing edge with water falling onto a catch basin. The pool has pebbletec and about half of the depth of the basin does too (as shown in the pic). I have never seen the pool level be low. The catch basin, however, not infrequently has water below the level of the pebbletec, which I was told by the prior owner we should prevent at all times. Unfortunately, the autofiller seems to not be working, and I have established this is because a pipe burst when they winterized the sprinkler system and they left the valve shut, so water is not flowing to autofill. But I have also noticed that when we activate the vanity edge, the water level goes down in the catch basin, which I am assuming is because it's relocating from the basin to the main pool to increase the volume of water to push it out down the edge. The problem is that when the waterfall mode turns off, I don't see the water level re-filling in the catch basin.

A few questions:

  1. how much should I obsess about the pebbletec being fully covered with water at all times in the basin -- I will bring out a team to fix the autofill but I would also like to stop shoving the hose in there and manually filling it (or pushing water from the main pull to the basin like a maniac; btw doing this does not bring the pool water level anywhere close to low, it's like the pool-basin lost their balance)

  2. is it correct to assume the autofill only fills the basin and the basin fills the pool? or is there typically an autofill for the main pool that may be working just fine since the level is always there

  3. right now we have the vanishing edge waterfall mode come on once a day purely for "maintenance" - is this worth doing? and since the level of water in the basin doesn't seem to correct after the waterfall is done, should I assume the autofill would kick in every time if the pipe were open and flowing? unless the water level should be starting so much higher, that even when it goes down, it wouldn't go below the level at which the autofill would be triggered?

  4. Are there settings I should tweak? I don't see anything very intuitive in the iAqualink app.

Hope this makes sense to some of you, thanks for your knowledge. Strongly recommend against pools with vanishing edges (on top of this, we've had dead rodents fall in there, and the water is too low relative to the edge for any of the commercially available ramps to work)
