Just got my disability rating today

I got a good rating based largely on a mental health claim for PTSD, etc. And my main point of trauma was serving as queer under Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

It was a gamble. I was worried it would get tossed out because the government wasn't going to admit any harm caused by that policy, especially with current administration, but it worked! I had a good letter from my therapist, and sympathetic interviewers and I am so relieved!

Has anyone else served during DADT? I'd love to hear your stories, and I'm curious if anyone else has gotten a rating from the experience?

Do you have a "never" list?

Are there things you know you'll never write? Or are you unwilling to draw a line?

For me, I won't write sexual abuse, rape or trafficking stories. They bother me in ways I don't want to share, and I don't think I have anything relevant to say about them.

I won't write love triangles. I find reading those stories just frustrating.

I won't write stories where a large part of it is the protagonist being falsely accused or willfully misunderstood. I can't say why, but stories where the problems come from an easily-disproved lie or general unfairness hurt to read. I really struggled with Under The Dome.

And I won't kill the dog. Just a choice I decided to make, to set myself this boundary. I know some people react badly to hurting animals in stories, and I also know it can be a very easy way to pull tears. So I have made this rule for myself.

Will I really never-ever write about these things? Probably not, but there's a chance I'll surprise myself one day. It's mostly about not writing things or tropes I specifically dislike reading myself.

What's you list, if you have one?

EDIT: there is no value in arguing, it's weird to me that anyone is. We all have our own boundaries, rules and limitations. At most, you can see someone's list and think "I won't like anything they write." Judging someone for being wrong is just not really the spirit of the conversation.

Bird Labyrinth in Utah

Made by local artist Alice Toler, who specializes in labyrinths (though never on this scale!)

Pretty sure she said it shoes up on google maps too. Just completed last year.

"Dagon" is one letter off from a slur against Italians. And we know how Howard felt about Italians.

Coincidence?

Probably.

But kinda funny either way

EDIT: reddit just suggested i crosspost the to r/thesopranos !!

What are some non-writing skills you actually find helpful in your writing?

For example, I also paint and do digital art. Strictly hobby-level, mind you. From that, I take the idea of layers. When a scene or a character seems flat, it might just need another layer, more texture, if you get what I mean.

My time in the improv trenches similarly taught me to look at things from unusual angles, to find and eradicate assumed but unspoken rules and limitations, and "spontaneous" storytelling, an approach where I move forward with no preparation, and just see where it takes me, adding and adding until it feels full.

Anyone else having trouble checking their claim at va.gov?

For the past two days when I go to the page the part of the page that shows progress is just missing!

The Minotaur as a metaphor for a horror lurking at the heart of artistic production

Since at least the mid-1990s, different artists from different fields of art have - seemingly more or less independently of one another - begun using the labyrinth as a metaphor for the modern art world, the production of art, and the artistic process, and the minotaur as a metaphor for a kind of murderous nihilistic horror at the heart of this labyrinth (i. e. of modern art itself). I can name four examples just off the top of my head.

  • David Bowie's 1. Outside from 1995 is the oldest example I could find. It tells the story of a murderer identified with the Minotaur who stages his murders as art installations, surrounded by a labyrinthine artistic culture who precisely licenses such crimes as art. The album goes into topics of body modification, (self-)mutilation, suicide, murder and the desecration of corpses as "art". In a way, it is also the most radical of these examples.

  • Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves is a 2000 horror novel about the horrors of modern photography, film, and architecture - focusing not on the grand architectural masterpieces, but on the eerieness of everyday living. The minotaur in this novel symbolizes a connection between artistic ambition and social and emotional alienation. The novel itself is labyrinthine, structured as a kind of matroshka doll of different narratives nestled within one another.

  • Einstürzende Neubauten, a German experimental avant-garde rock band, published the album Silence is Sexy in 2000, only a few months after Danielewski's book. At least two songs - Redukt and Zampano - take up the myth of Theseus in the labyrinth of Minos, though the Minotaurus seems to lurk more in the background here. Much like 1. Outside, Redukt has a strong theme of self-dismemberment. Zampano seems to be a direct reference to Danielewski's novel, which features a character of the same name. The text also fits that character.

  • The 2017 surrealist dark comedy movie Dave Made A Maze tells about a young man who creates a maze-like structure out of cardboard in his living room - which, much like Danielewski's House of Leaves, is bigger on the inside and develops a life of its own. In the course of the movie, Dave's unbridled artistic ambition assumes the shape of a murderous minotaur.

I'm in search of further examples for this motif in any art form, as well as possible interpretations of it and explanations for its strange recurrence since the mid-90s.

Power out during my nap, thought I was gonna die!

Suddenly felt like I was suffocating, what a way to wake up!

Do you suppose any models have a battery backup to avoid this?

Anyone else experience this?

Grace Chastity after the show

>!What if she got pregnant from her tryst with zombie Max, the offspring would wind up in a very Carrie situation: mysterious father, fanatic mother, and something supernatural about them.!<

I'd love to see, even as shorts, some "what happened after the show" lore!

Some are from sources like Veriditas and Lauren Artress's works, some I've thought about, some I've stumbled across elsewhere. I would love to know if you all have any others I can add (and if thet come from any specific works I should read). Thank you in advance!

What is your favorite historical or media labyrinth?

I'm big on the Pattern of The Chronicles of r/Amber, but also fond of the movie r/labyrinth (which doesn't have an actual, literal labyrinth in it), and the book r/houseofleaves , which uses labyrinth and Minotaur symbolism. The mythic Cretan labyrinth is quite the tale as well, with gods, bestiality, human sacrifice, and thread!

There are others out there, for sure! I'm not aware of many of the contemplative, meditative walking labyrinths in stories and media, but I'd be curious if you knew any!

Anything counts that you think counts, pedantic definitions and such are a cool discussion for another time!
