Some tips for jacket making beginners from your local sewist

I’ve been sewing and DIY-ing since I was a kid, and here’s some stuff I’ve learned that helps my jackets last. Use this advice or don’t—I’m not your dad. This is just shit that in my experience helps prevent patches from getting lost or jackets falling apart. It also helps washer proof the damn things.

- If you’re worried about your patches moving around while you sew, Heat-n-Bond lite will keep them in place and not make your fabric too stiff (which is important for comfort if you aren’t washing it)

- Dental floss is a fantastic option, but if you want other colors you can get waxed thread in a variety of colors. I have a couple cones of it in red, black, and white that I picked up for about $7, and they’re 284 yards each (so abt $0.01/ft). As a comparison, dental floss is about $2-5 for on average 50-100yds.

- Another alternative thread is sashiko thread, which is already meant to reinforce multiple layers of fabric and also comes in a variety of colors.

- 100% poly thread is stronger than cotton, true—but it’s also slippery as all fuck. So if you’re using thicker thread, your tie off knots can come apart really easily. I combat this by using a lighter to melt the knot together. It’s still plastic after all. This isn’t necessary if you’re using all-purpose thread (which is thinner and has less surface area to slip around on) or thread with natural fibers like cotton.

- Invest in some canvas or upholstery needles. They’re much sturdier, so they’re less likely to snap even on seams, and they go through layers of canvas like a dream

- I use a sashiko thimble, which is a small piece of leather that covers the base of my middle finger. It’s really cheap and lets me press down with more force while I’m pushing the needle through the fabric

- CURE YOUR DIY PAINTED PATCHES PROPERLY! They need to air dry for at least 24 hours and then they need to be heat treated with a hot iron. Use parchment paper in between the painted surface and the iron.

- When it comes to fabric jackets, embroidered patches also need to be sewn on. I don’t care if it messes with the look—in the event that you do have to wash your jacket, those shits are coming off. They also will just eventually peel off with age as the glue breaks down, even if you don’t wash it. If you’re really worried about the look, use thread with a minimum weight of 30wt (the lower the number, the thicker the thread—30wt can be used for denim, and it’s much more common than other weights, so it’s a good choice here) in a color as close to the color of border of the patch as you can get. I personally use a running stitch to create a solid line of stitching close to the finished edge of the patch.

If anyone has any other advice, please feel free to comment it. And again, I am not your dad, you don’t have to listen to me here. Do what thou wilt

Heaven Help Us patch for my jacket :]

May go back and add the “now”, but I’m fairly happy as is. Truth be told this is my first time painting a custom patch, and I’m primarily an illustrator instead of a painter, so I’m delighted with how this turned out!

Seattle Punks: Advice Needed

I’m going to a show at the Showbox SoDo in November, and I’m trying to put a jacket together for it. Does anyone know what qualifies under their no spikes rule?

I know that the long spikes would obviously count (and I’m going to be in the pit so that’s right out anyway) but has anyone run into issues with short cone studs or anything?

Any advice appreciated before I start gathering materials, as I’d like to at least enter the venue with my jacket. Thank you!

Advice Needed: could this tattoo be reworked into an American trad style?

I got this tattoo about six years ago when I was 19, and while I generally like it, I definitely fucked up picking the stippling. I’d like to rework it slightly to be more along the lines of an American traditional style. Wondering if this would be at all possible. Thanks for any help in this

Eta: thank you very much for the advice, I will just have to leave as is. C’est la vie.

An observation on bohabs in public

Something I’ve noticed is whenever I wear my GWAR merch in public, other bohabs who notice it are always really eager to actually talk to me about GWAR on a level beyond “cool shirt.” Like they’ll actually talk to me about what album is their favorite, the artistic intent of the band, and (if they have any) their opinions on the newer stuff.

I’m autistic and love talking about my interests, so it’s a very nice change of pace for it to be not just invited, but welcomed by total strangers.

PSA: Free Summer Lunches (and Books!) for kids at Mary Bridge

Howdy folks!

I wanted to let people know who may not be aware, or may need it, that there will be free meals available for anyone and everyone under 18 at Mary Bridge Outpatient Center.

The program runs June 29th to September 4th, and is available Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM!

All families are welcome, the only requirement to get a free meal is to be under 18.

They will also have free books available!

And, for anyone looking to help, you can donate new, unread books to Mary Bridge for their book drive! (You can also donate money, but Reddit sniped my original post when I tried to share the link)

Looking for advice on writing a bilingual Norwegian character (idiomatic language)

Hi!

Please let me know if this is the incorrect sub to ask this.

I’m writing a character who is Norwegian but speaks both Norwegian and English. Norwegian is his native language, and it’s what he speaks at home (so it’s his default), but he learned English very young.

I know a very common mistake many bilingual people make is attempt to translate an idiom directly from their native language into English. I am looking for common examples of idioms a native speaker might use in Norwegian that wouldn’t necessarily translate literally in English, or word choices someone who speaks Norwegian natively may use instead of the choices a native English speaker might use.

For example, would someone who spoke Norwegian natively say “I kicked his ass” after winning a fight, or something different?

He and his family from Eastern Norway, for reference.

Any other advice is welcomed.

Cave of Swimmers Tattoo by Miko Mueller at Destiny City Tattoo in Tacoma!

Photos are a couple weeks old, but it’s mostly healed now (still a bit of silver skin in places)

The cave of swimmers is a Neolithic cave painting site in Egypt. Super cool. I wanna get some more cave paintings at some point (eyeing that chauvet cave bear) but this is a great start!

Missed Opportunity for the Official Cuttlefish

The official Cuttlefish Sex Toy should’ve had a cum tube. If BD can make a cum tube work with the one shaped like a dragon’s head, it could absolutely work with the cuttlefish. I know it was probably for production cost purposes, but it feels like a missed opportunity to not give the thing known for spraying people with cum and blood the ability to spray cum and blood.

Looking for any “infohazardous”/cursed images or phrases that are unrelated to SCP

To elaborate further: I’m looking for examples of stories with images, phrases, texts, etc where knowing about or seeing the information in question causes harm or death to the viewer, that are NOT part of an SCP.

Examples include Smile Dog, Solar Plexus Clown Glider, the poem Tomino’s Hell, The Scariest Picture on The Internet, etc

Images or short phrases are preferred as this is for a very tentative screen printing project. Stuff from around or before 2010 is ESPECIALLY wanted.

I have tried searching for things like this but unfortunately “cursed images” has an entirely different connotation nowadays than what I mean here. I’m talking about the general type of stuff snopes would debunk in the old days. If anyone has any leads, please share!
