What are best practices for removing through hole capacitors from a PCB without damaging the pad?

I'm trying to replace all of the capacitors on my Sega Genesis Model 2 with new ones. They are all through hole, but these boards are getting pretty old at this point. I guess i am thinking about very specific things such as: should I cut the old capacitor flush with the board PRIOR to desoldering the remaining pieces of each leg? Should I use a solder sucker first, and then soldering wick after to clean up the remnants, then once I think I've gotten all the solder, apply heat and using tweezers remove the 2 remaining leg pieces? I really don't want to harm these pads and some guy at the retro game shop said its very easy to rip the pads off of these things when replacing the capacitors. I just want to learn how to do this the correct way, with everything in the correct order.

Impressed with MitraMan

First time customer of MitraMan and a great experience with both the quality of the product, and the customer service. I have been a regular kratom fanatic since 2015 and tried so many vendors, but never MitraMan until now.

I ordered a little variety of bags, and the big bag was supposed to be Red Elephant but I received Red Maeng Da instead. I sent an email with a picture of everything, and very quickly got a response with a tracking number for the bag of Red Elephant thats being shipped to me, and they told me to keep the Red Maeng Da! Now THAT is customer service, and that alone is a huge reason that I intend to continue doing business with them. The other big reason? This kratom absolutely SLAMS. Very good quality stuff- even before I indulged in it, the consistency, the smell, and the color of the powder made me say out loud "Ohhhh yeah. This is gonna be good." So thank you MitraMan!!

EDIT: My apologies, I should have specified this in my post. I have chronic pain from several different incidents in my life. I use kratom once or twice per day depending on how bad the pain is. Thats why this order I placed was all red strains, the consensus seems to be that red strains are good for pain. And these ones are very good for that so far.

First time installing battery holder- how did I do?

This is a copy of Donkey Kong Country, I just finished installing the battery holder. I was able to get it to sit flush, nice and flat against the board as you can see in the pictures. I don't own a multimeter so I can't test it! Just want to make sure it looks OK first of all.

I reccomend the HZY brand C245 & C210 tips on AliExpress

So far, as far as AliExpress tips go, I've tried MYTO, HZY, Mechanic, and OLT. I gotta say, crazy thing is the OLT are usually priced the highest among these brands but they are my least favorite. The finish work on the actual geometry of the tip isn't that great on every one... perhaps sloppy QC? Who knows. They also do not send the tip inside the typical little plastic box/protector, but its just in a cardboard sleeve (not a big deal, I know, but I love the little plastic containers!!)

But moving on, the Mechanic, MYTO, and HZY tips have all been fantastic. And with how cheap the prices are, I ordered a whole bunch of each brand to make sure this is a fair review. I really think that all 3 of these brands are solid, but the reason I give HZY the top prize here, is because of the price. I was just looking at a listing of C245 tips, they had almost 20 different ones to choose from. The price range for the entire selection of tips? $3.62 to $4.18, I mean it's pretty wild that for $20 bucks I can pick up 4 maybe 5 tips even. Just thought I'd throw it out there, if anyone has good or bad experiences with them please do tell!

My Sega Genesis Model 2 looks like a different console with HD Retrovision cable

The title says it all. I couldn't believe the difference when I hooked up this cable to my Genesis. I'm only using a cheap Retroscaler2x but even still, this isn't even in the same ballpark as before. Incredible cable!!!

Need help getting an NES setup

Hey folks, I am heavy into collecting retro consoles/controllers/games you name it. I love repairing and refurbishing them, and I have flash cartridges for all of my other systems. But the NES is the one console I do not have. The worst part? About 10 years ago I had a beautiful Top-Loader NES in fantastic condition, but I don't anymore.

My point is, I just want to start with an NES and 2 original controllers. I'd even buy a broken NES and fix it (that's what I do, after all) as long as it still looks good esthetically. Where would be the best place to find these 3 items? I don't need power supply or A/V cable, just console and 2 controllers for cheap.

So happy I've started soldering, to the new people don't be afraid like I was

This is just an appreciation post, first of all to the great folks on here who are so helpful and knowledgeable about this particular craft (or is it more of an art?). And secondly just to the world of soldering. It's something I always wanted to get into and get good at. At the age of 32, I've just recently devoted myself to learning it and bought a Geeboon TC22 with C245 and C210 handles. I collect/restore old video game consoles and, so far I've successfully modded an N64 and completely repaired 2 broken Sega Genesis, all 3 required different degrees of soldering. And I had a blast doing it.

To anyone out there who wants to get started, don't be afraid like I was for so long. I'm having the time of my life. My soldering joints just look better and better all the time, and I have 12 unopened practice kits, going to do at least 1 today since I have time. I truly look forward to any chance I get to disassemble something and fix it. It puts me into a critical thinking/analytical/but also almost meditative state haha. And I highly reccomend getting a station with C245 and C210 handles because I thought I'd mainly use C245 but so far I've only used C210. I can't reccomend the Geeboon TC22 enough. User friendly, and just feels so intuitive and natural to use, for a beginner like me it's perfect (and for anyone really).

I got the new Rev Z FXPAK PRO on AliExpress with the KY Technologies board...

And wow. This thing blew my expectations right out of the water. I immediately updated to the latest firmware 11.11.2 or whatever it is, and it worked great. I got Super Gameboy/Super Gameboy 2 working fine. Save states working fine. Plays all of the different type of chips games perfectly. I was able to wait for the price to get a little lower and use some of my coins and a coupon- I got it for $66 bucks, shipped and everything. I am using my own SD card, first thing I did was use my SD card but man, for $66???? This is unbelievable.

Today is 14th day on subs and I only take 1mg every 12 hours

Am I good to jump off now since I've only been on it for 2 weeks and I'm at such a low dose? I'm thinking of cutting it in half and taking 0.5mg every 12 hours for another 3 days, then 0.25mg every 12 hours for another 3 after that, and then jumping off. From my experience with my body with these kind of things, it takes about 2 to 3 days for a new dose to stabilize before I make another change. I know it won't be fun, but will it be so bad I need to take time off from work?

Could use a bit of advice to get started on this one

I've never quite done anything like this and I could use a bit of direction... this switch no longer functions (the first picture, black box looking thing with the white up/down spring loaded switch on top). It has 5 legs that go down through-hole to the other side of the board (picture 2 shows the other side). Now the replacement switch (with blue top, picture 3), has 6 instead of 5 so I'll need to trim 1 off for it to be a proper fit. I've never done any proper desoldering before but I have a solder sucker (Engineer model) and a roll of desoldering wick. I have a brand new Geeboon TC22 and lots of different flux, etc. I just need a hand knowing what techniques to use here. I also have a variety of tips both C245 and C210.

Day 8 free from 7OH, I feel like a different person

Imagine actually choosing to go somewhere like grocery shopping even? Imagine planning everything around your next dose of 7? Imagine always being broke because your spending hundreds of $ a week on that crap? It's horrible, and even 8 days of NOT having to do that has been fantastic. I have not had even 1 craving for 7 since then. I just consider myself lucky and grateful to have gotten out of that whole thing. And if I can do it, I'm sure with some real effort you can too.

Come on guys lets kick this junk and start living our lives, all of us. We only get 1 life to live and being broke, boring, and constipated as hell all the time is no way to live it.

I love having 4 of my favorite old consoles right in my bedroom

I put the SNES and the Genesis in the very center to symbolize the great 16-bit console wars. In my mind there was no true winner- the only winner is the population of gamers who get to experience both

Cleaning pin connectors on old cartridge consoles with Deoxit D5

Specifically, I'm wondering the proper way to use Deoxit D5 on the pin connectors of NES, Snes, Genesis, etc. I would just use the regular cloth-on-credit card trick, but Deoxit supposedly dries quickly so I'm not sure how well that would work? Several game store owners/employees said that using Deoxit every once in a blue moon, in addition to regular isopropyl alcohol cleanings, is a good practice. I want to do this to keep my consoles running as long as possible, but I don't know the best way to apply this product.

How to make this cartridge look as good as possible?

I have this exact DK Country cartridge and I just want to make it look as good as possible but I've never had to clean such a beat up cart before, especially the labels are what I worry about (notice all the edges of the front label). How would I go about cleaning this without further damaging the labels?

My final dose is down the hatch. Have the script from the doc ready to go. I'm actually SO excited for this.

Final dose 8:00 AM, Friday July 10th. I've done this twice before so I know exactly what to expect for WD's. For some reason, for me, WD's always take forever to start, must be my body chemistry. People say they get them in 4 to 6 hours, for me the fastest it ever happened was a little over 12 hours. But this time I have the script on my side, going to only use enough to take the edge off the very worst symptoms as I plan to taper off the script ASAP. Don't want to trade one thing for another. The only symptom that honestly bothers me is the whole restless leg/restless body thing. Everything else I can deal with just fine. If the medicine can simply just take that symptom away or make it way more managable, thats all I need it to do. I have Monday off and then it's back to normal Tuesday so as long as I'm at least functioning by then, I'm good to go. I know that experience reports can sometimes be helpful to read for informational purposes, so I will leave updates in the comments every 12 hours or so. Any comments/words of wisdom/advice is encouraged. Here we GOOOOOOOO!!!

I love collecting/fixing/refurbishing old snes controllers (and can you tell I'm obsessed with the Asciipad?)

These are all just simply some of the finest controllers ever made and I love them, the funny part is the ones that have had the least amount of issues or breakage or malfunctions by far are the Asciipad's. Those things are built like tanks, even the little turbo switches. The most I've ever had to do is give them a cleaning and it's fixed any type of problem, which they've barely ever had any anyways.

Are these real AMTECH 559?

I got this 2 pack of these, came with the needle tips and the white plungers too for $4.19 shipped from AliExpress. Just seems like a real cheap price to me.

Got my QuickMD appointment today, new to this but wish me luck!

The time has come to do this, I've quit before from smaller doses but now I'm around 1,000mg a day of 7OH and it has a bit of pseudo mixed in this time, and the withdrawls are just too much of a pain to be able to do it and still function for work/life in general. I made my QuickMD appointment for in a few hours, and if anyone has any advice/experiences/words of wisdom about going this route, you're all welcome to share and I'm all ears.

Does anyone here think that S Video looks sharper/more defined/crisper than RGB/component on SNES?

For the longest time (and I mean until I was almost 30 years old), I played my snes with the typical red-yellow-white (composite) cables because I had no idea that there WAS such a thing as other cables that look better. When someone told me about S Video cables I was so excited I immediately bought a pair of Insurrection Industries S Video cables and wow, mind = blown. That was when I was about 30. When I was 32, I then finally purchased the HD Retrovision RGB cables and again, wow look at these colors!!!

Let's jump to tonight. I've been playing with just those cables for maybe almost 2 straight years. For some reason in my Super Metroid obsession that has me playing hours per day the past 3 days, I just noticed some kind of like "fuzziness" around the text and stuff that I didn't like. Just for shits and giggles, I pulled out the old Insurrection Industries S Video cables and my jaw hit the floor. Yeah, maybe the COLORS don't pop as much, but unless I'm trippin' everything just looks more sharp and crisp. Does anyone else think S Video might be more "crisp" or "sharp" or something? I'd love to see if anyone agrees.
