I need some input from experienced media buyers on a weird progression I just saw with a Lead Gen campaign. I think I successfully "primed" an ad set to fix terrible lead quality, but I want to know if I just got lucky.
The Baseline (My Friend's Setup):
My friend (a graphic designer with great creatives) was running a Lead Gen campaign.
Targeting: Broad
Result: A good volume of leads at a normal/acceptable CPL, but the lead quality was absolute trash. Meta was just finding the cheapest, lowest-intent form fillers. He ran this for 15 days.
My Intervention (Phase 1):
I created a brand new campaign. Same budget, same creatives.
Targeting: Extremely tight, niche audience.
Result (2 days): The CPL skyrocketed and was way too expensive, BUT the lead quality was incredibly good.
The Switch (Phase 2):
I went into that exact same ad set and stripped away all the niche targeting, opening it back up to the exact same Broad targeting my friend originally used.
Targeting: Broad
Result: The CPL dropped back down to a normal/cheap level, the volume went up, AND it maintained the high lead quality from the niche test.
Here is a quick breakdown of what happened:

My Theory:
Because lead generation algorithms are "lazy" and look for the cheapest form-fillers, starting broad gave my friend garbage data. By forcing the new ad set to target a niche audience for 2 days, I fed Meta high-quality conversion data. When I switched to Broad, the AI already knew exactly what a "good" lead looked like, combining the quality of the niche audience with the cheap CPMs of a broad audience.
Has anyone else tested this specifically for Lead Generation? Did my 2-day niche test actually "seed" the ad set with quality data, or does switching to Broad completely reset the learning phase, and I just hit a lucky pocket?
