My first Ping

Jaumavensis x cyclosecta.

It isn’t going to stay in the humidity long.

Edit: oh god the video quality has been murdered I’m sorry lol

Jaumavensis x cyclosecta just arrived.

From Rainbow of course. I feel like everyone knows them. Very excited and I hope it likes it in the bowl.

What could be wrong with this Drosera spatulata?

I got it from Joel’s Venus Flytraps on Etsy. It arrived looking sad which was expected but it’s not bouncing back at all, it even may look worse than when it arrived in this photo.

I’ve given it normal light, acclimated it for a couple days since it was in darkness during shipping, have given it only a constant supply of distilled water to sit in and it’s never dried out.

The seller tried to act like I did something wrong when I followed their care sheet. What gives?

It has never not looked like a sad clump of shit.

Edit: specifics…

Watered with distilled water, has never dried out, light amounts come out to around 900-1000+ FC in the spot it’s at under full spectrum lights since that was recommended after shipping for a few days instead of full strength immediately.

Would anyone like to help me with IDing these?

I ordered a multi-pack of mosses to start my own moss farm to use for terrariums and stuff. They didn’t specify on the page and I figured they would be labeled on arrival.

I messaged the seller but perhaps you guys will be quicker.

A few months into cabinet ownership…

I’ve moved a few to ambient and I’ve lost some entirely (that Carol Knight begonia is on its last legs and I have no idea why) but overall they all seem happy.

Top left is selaginella brownii, a variegated Dark Phoenix tissue culture, a jewel orchid, a mounted Bulbophyllum freitagii that’s starting to perk up after recent shipping, and my African Violet tucked in between them all.

Top right is a Philodendron melanochrysum, and an Anthurium clarinervium.

Top level stays around 75-80% humidity with a small USB fan to move air around and the bottom is 60%~ which could be better but I like having a lower humidity zone for other stuff that may not need it as high.

Bottom left and right is a strawberry begonia, an Autumn Ember begonia, a Don Miller begonia, my drosera spatulata that are recovering from shipping as well, and (the favorite) begonia amphioxus.

Tiny var. DP leaves

I can’t wait until this gets larger. I feel like it’s going to be stunning if I don’t murder it some how. It just moved from sphagnum to aroid mix so it’s a little angry atm.

Is there anything you’d change or add?

I ordered from Rainbow Carnivores and it’s currently on the way, so I’d like to correct anything before water and plants get added.

I have a springtail culture waiting, and a bunch of mosses that should be here by Monday. Am I missing anything?

Taunting me.

Do you absolutely need temp drops for spikes?

I’ve noticed that most varieties need a pretty serious drop in temp to “trigger blooms” but I seriously doubt that all of these people are shuffling their plants around and crowding them next to windows and stuff like the internet suggests.

Surely there’s a more practical way? Mine is mounted and I plan to collect more mounted species but I definitely can’t feasibly move my entire greenhouse cabinet into the basement or next to a window and I’m not going to rip the plant out of its microclimate in there just for flowers.

What are my options? So far I’m looking at investing in a thermoelectric cooler unit but genuinely don’t feel like wiring it up to run through an outlet since they only sell them as part replacements for refrigeration it seems like.

I genuinely find it hard to believe that you need that much of a temp drop for blooms. 68°F is as low as the house goes and the cabinet is never anywhere near that even with the lights off.

Edit: Please don’t downvote me, I’m just trying to learn. lol Everyone asks stupid questions when they’re cutting their teeth.

Freshly mounted Bulbophyllum freitagii that arrived today.

This is my first miniature orchid variety. Hoping for the best.

New mini-cabinet

(If this doesn’t count, I apologize.)

The plan is to use this for miniature orchids that require mounting, but also allows for different smaller species of plants like mosses, fittonia, pings, and some more compact begonias perhaps.

8.3”x8.3”x12 glass enclosure, cork bark background, LECA drainage layer, gritty layer, then a sloped layer of aroid mix on top.

40mm x 20mm micro fan to push air inside, 2 Barrina T5s that I used aquarium silicone to adhere to the outer part of the cabinet so I didn’t have to sacrifice space inside. They’re diagonal to try to create a light gradient in different parts of the cabinet. (400 FC to 1000+ FC in some spots)

The hygrometer has a thumb tack superglued to the back of it in case it needs to move around.

u/vapemustache — 16 days ago

Switched up to the Barrina T5s the other day in the main cabinet.

I also got a new desk so I was able to repurpose part of it as a little side shelf for my cannabis seedlings (using two cheap LUVCOSY T5s) and succulents (they’re using 5w SANSI clip lights).

I also noticed that in my Fabrikor if I swap the Modern Aqua shelf around so the cable management slots are in the front it makes the humidity transfer much better to the bottom part of the cabinet since my humidifier hose is attached at the back wall. It kind of creates this waterfall of moisture that was getting trapped against the doors with the shelf switched the other way.

I have a plastic panel on the left that I do my cable management through so I don’t really need the gaps at the rear of the shelf like designed.

Amphioxus

I’ve been wanting one of these for a while and I found one at the local nursery in a spot pretty far away from the other begonias. If I stole your stash plant I’m sorry. (Not)

Young Pink Tiger pods after an early morning rain shower today.

These look so much more insane in person.

It’s been about 2 weeks since deflasking this variegated Dark Phoenix TC…

What am I looking for regarding the next steps?

It doesn’t seem to be yellowing or wilting, it’s kind of been in the same state since I washed the agar off. It’s currently planted in a mix of chopped up sphagnum moss and vermiculite. I want to say the smaller leaves are new growth actually since I don’t remember there being more than one tiny leaf like that, so it appears to be doing well so far.

First cucumbers of the season budding out!

I don’t know why, but I’m always so hype when nature does what it’s been doing for literally millions of years.

u/vapemustache — 2 months ago

Predatory mites did not even remotely touch my spider mite problem.

Can someone recommend some systemic stuff to use?

Nature’s Good Guys didn’t really work as well as everyone says it does…as in I’m pretty sure I just bought two shakers of vermiculite for 50 dollars as far as I’m concerned.
