I've been working at my job for two years and have gotten a lot of experience and confidence with the work that I do. I've noticed over the past 12 or so months that my coworkers consistently drop the ball with what we're supposed to be doing, and I end up having to pick up the slack and compensate for what theyre failing to accomplish. I dont necessarily mind, and theyre good people, but my hourly rate has been disappointing me for quite some time and I feel that I'm not being compensated apropriately for the work I do.
I finally worked up the courage to ask for a raise, and was told by my boss that higher management is not likely to increase my pay without also increasing my responsibilities. Thats fine, I said I'd do whatever extra work is necessary, and thats when he also mentioned that they want to see how I perform with the extra responsibilities BEFORE they increase my pay. Again, I said alright, I guess thats fine too. How long will I have to wait? The answer to that was I have to wait a whole year before I'll see any change in pay.
Now I know this is legal and theyre probably not breaking any laws by having me take on a higher position without increasing my pay, but is this something thats common for employers to do? And if not, should I try to negotiate for a better outcome, or just accept the situation and put in more work? I've been thinking of asking to recieve a bonus by the end of the year to account for the extra effort I'll have put in, but I'm worried thatll be asking for too much and I should just be grateful they're going to eventually give me a raise at all.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
