I made a free Excel air change calculator for commissioning engineers
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a free Excel tool I've developed called AirChange Basic.
I built it during my third-year mechanical engineering placement, where I worked as an HVAC commissioning engineer in a hospital.
I found myself repeatedly calculating air changes per hour, so I decided to make a simple tool to speed things up and reduce mistakes on site.
The goal of AirChange Basic is to make those calculations quicker and easier for any fellow engineers, technicians or interns carrying out air balancing.
I've put together a short 2.5-minute video showing how it works, and the Excel calculator is completely free to download and use.
I'd really appreciate any feedback from people working in the industry.
If you notice any bugs or have ideas for improvements, please let me know, I'd love to keep improving it.

HVAC Career
Hey everyone! I’m looking into getting into HVAC in NC. I’m looking at goodwill or my local community college. Do I need to get the actually diploma or just the certificate? What’s the best options?
My local college is Forsyth Tech and goodwill.
My long term goal is to start my own HVAC company.(a small team of people).
Apprenticeship for refrigeration techs?
Hey everyone,
I’m looking to get into the trade and wanted to get some honest feedback on how difficult it currently is to land a first-year apprenticeship as a Refrigeration / HVAC Tech, specifically around East coast with zero experience. I have a 1 year automotive diploma but didn't get hours for my apprenticeship and now work as a very experienced cook.
Is it realistic to expect a shop to hire me on green as a helper and help teach me, or do most local employers expect you to have some experience first? I'd love to know what the market looks like for entry-level guys right now, what kind of work (residential vs. commercial) is easiest to break into.
Thanks for the advice!
What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve learned in HVAC?
reddit.comHVAC or industrial maintenance??
I am at a crossroads right now. I have been doing warehouse work for the past 6 years and I am done with the low pay and long hours. I am looking to go to school at a community college either for HVAC or automation industrial technology and finish with an associate. Give me some pros and cons about each trade and some insight if youre in either industry. I am in Southern Arizona. I am not afraid of hard work or learning.
Picked up my first lever pipe bender set. Tips for preventing kinks in copper?
Just got this tubing bender kit to work on some refrigeration lines. It comes with the lever bender (red handle), a set of 7 black bending dies for various tube ODs (looks like 1/4" up to 3/4"), a compact pipe cutter, and a deburring/reaming tool.
I’ve only ever used spring benders before, so a lever system is completely new to me. What are the biggest rookie mistakes with these tools?
Specifically:
- When bending 3/8" copper, is it better to do a 90° bend in one smooth pull, or should I go step-by-step?
- Any advice on preventing the rollers or dies from scratching the copper surface? Should I put a tiny bit of oil on the track?
Appreciate any insights from the HVAC pros here! Planning to practice on scrap copper first before touching the real lines. 🤙
27 male heavily interested in HVAC-R but hesitant.
Hello Guys i’m 27 years old. I’m at a cross roads in my life. My conscious has been screaming in my ear to do HVACR. I’m just so scared and hesitant cause i’ve heard so many horror stories. But i know it’ll benefit me soo much financially in the Future. IS HVACR really worth it financially? Will I Die? Or is it really worth it period? If i make the decision, imma go to school then get my apprenticeship next year. Or i may just go to school while working as an Apprentice.
Does someone having an EPA Section 608 Universal Certification make them a licensed HVAC company/person?
I recently bought a house and want to make sure I'm doing my due diligence before hiring someone to work on my HVAC system.
If a contractor provides an EPA Section 608 Universal Certification, does that mean they're considered a licensed HVAC professional, or is that certification only for handling refrigerants?
Are HVAC technicians individually licensed, or is it only the company that's licensed?
Appreciate any advice.

reddit.comIT/CS background — BAS/controls or hvac/electrical apprenticeship?
If you had this on paper, which would you pick?
**•** CS associate degree
**•** CompTIA A+
**•** \~1 year IT support at an MSP
BAS/controls feels like the natural jump from IT and im more interested in this too. But hvac or electrical gets me a real ticket. Either way I want to run my own business down the road.
What would you do and why?
Fyi, Im in Vancouver, Canada
Can you get hired in HVAC with online training and no field experience?
I’m wondering if online HVAC training can help someone get an entry level job if they have no field experience yet. What else would make someone more hireable?
Can anyone tell me how I can get started in maintenance?
I’m currently in sanitation and have been
for about 7 years and been wanting to look into doing something different. I was thinking hotel maintenance or facility maintenance? I have an EPA universal certificate, and have done a crash course on appliance repair, that’s about it.
How much should I spend on HVAC school?
I’m seeing HVAC programs with very different prices. Some are short and cheaper, and some are long and expensive. How much is reasonable to spend if the goal is to get hired?

reddit.comBest path to work in HVAC or plumbing in Belgium as a Moroccan?
I am a 21-year-old Moroccan looking to build a career in a technical trade. My plan is to study a technical field in Morocco and later move to Belgium to continue my training and work.
I am particularly interested in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), plumbing, and thermal installation systems.
In your opinion, what would be the best path for a young Moroccan who wants to work in this field in Belgium?
I would also appreciate any advice regarding training opportunities, job prospects, and the requirements for foreigners.
Thank you very much for your help and advice! 😊
