What is the definition of Punyema? Is it even a word? I recall my Lolo saying it when he was frustrated lol. But I also heard him say Punyeta. Is it the same thing? Different meaning? Someone help

I built a Filipino conversation card app for the questions we don’t always know how to ask

I’m a Filipino developer, and I recently launched my first solo developed mobile app called **Kumustahan**.

It’s a simple conversation card app made for real kuwentuhan — with friends, your partner, your lifegroup, family, or even just yourself.

I built it because I noticed something very Filipino:
We’re good at staying together.
Tambay. Kain. Kwento. Long calls. Late nights. Group chats that never die.

“Kumusta?”
“Okay lang.”

And then the conversation moves on.

Kumustahan is my small attempt to create a soft way into those conversations.

You open the app, pick a deck, draw a card, and answer the question. Some are light, some are reflective, some are faith-based, and some are just meant to help people stay a little longer in a real conversation.

It has:
English and Tagalog/Taglish cards
offline use
no account needed
no ads
favorites and private notes
shareable card images
decks for getting to know, fun/light questions, self-reflection, and lifegroup/faith conversations

I really wanted the Tagalog to feel natural — not like translated app copy, not formal textbook Tagalog, but the way we actually talk.

The app is free on both App Store and Google Play. There’s an optional one-time expansion bundle, but the free version already has full decks you can use.
App: **kumustahan.app**

I’m sharing it here because I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from fellow Filipinos.
Does the idea make sense?
Do the questions feel useful?
Does the Tagalog/Taglish feel natural?
Where do you think people would actually use something like this?
Salamat sa mga magta-try. This is my first iOS + Android app, and honestly, I’m just grateful to finally share it.

I’m white and American

Forgive my poor Tagalog:

Paano sabihin yun “close your legs” sa Tagalog? Kasi, carefree ang asawa ko. Google says: “isara ang iyong mga binti “. Pero, no intendi siya. Americana / Filipina siay at magsalita Taglish mix kasama Ilocano.

Long story short: she and I have been married for two decades. I learned some Tagalog, but rarely speak it to her because she mixes English with Tagalog and Ilocano, plus short cuts (slang), so I can’t follow. She wears dresses a lot , but exposes herself. I’d like to tell her to close her legs in Tagalog so she won’t be embarrassed, because nobody will know what I’m saying.

Please help! Maraming salamat!

I have long dreamt of writing my thesis in Tagalog, and at last I finally did it! Here's photos of my presentation! https://imgur.com/a/tesis-sa-tagalog-5XvHlqx

Hopefully once the manuscript is published I can post the thesis here! Maraming salamat po sa lahat!

Glottal Stops in Southern Tagalog dialects

I am curious as to how far north in Southern Tagalog are glottal stops present in words where they are absent in Filipino/Manila Tagalog.

I am from Batangas myself and I'm well aware of the "ngay-on/gay-on/kataw-an/gab-i/laang". I ask this because when watching WanderZ Vlogs on Facebook, his grandparents and grandaunt from Rizal have these glottal stops present in their use of the aforementioned words.

I believe their family is from Cardona, Rizal. Perhaps due to the influx of non-Southern Tagalogs into the provinces adjacent to NCR and widespread media in standard Tagalog these glottal stops have fell out of use in some areas.

There really needs to be a new study re: dialectology of Tagalog because I find it hard to believe (as stated on Wikipedia) that the Manila dialect and Tanay-Paete dialects are grouped together instead of Tanay-Paete and other Southern Dialects.

What do you think about the evolution of the "Panghalip na Pamatlig" in Tagalog?

I just suddenly had a realization prior to posting this about ire, ito, iyan, and iyon. I remembered that the older forms seems to be yari,??,yaan, and yaon. Looking at the pattern, ito might have been yatu, isn't it?

I also recalled that iyan and iyon has an alternative ayan and ayun which got me thinking that maybe ayan and ayun/hayun is a relic of the transition from yaan and yaon to iyan and iyon. Add to that, ire seems to also be are in some dialects.

It got me into concluding that maybe the evolution of these words is like this:

yari > ayri > ire/are

yatu > aytu > ito

yaan > ayan > iyan

yaon > ayun > iyon

The ya seems to have been flipped to ay then phonetically combined and shifted to i.

Extending this evolution pattern to dire, dito, diyan, and doon:

dayari > dayri > dire

dayatu > daytu > dito

dayaan > dayan > diyan

dayaon > dayun > diyun > doon

I have nothing to prove that da is the actual prefix. It's just that I think it fits well. It is also possible that da is a variant of sa, so instead of sa yaon it became dayaon.

What do you guys think it actually is?

The shift from diyun to doon seems to be a pattern that is still ongoing.

ganyaon > ganayun > ganiyon > ganoon or na-yaon > nayun > niyon > noon

So, what do you guys think? I am not a linguist, but I am a native speaker. I have no idea if research in this already exists. I just wanna share some small realization I had when I was bored.

A friend was gracious enough to create for me an "Objection!" speech bubble from Ace Attorney in Tagalog, in both the Latin and Baybayin script, and I think they did an awesome job!

Link to the speech bubbles! https://imgur.com/a/tutol-ako-fuXi90b

Speech bubble and Latin script font by BMatSantos on DeviantArt, and the Baybayin font is Bagwis Baybayin by EdeL.

For fun, I also tried my hand at translating the other speech bubbles in the series, and I might get these made too one day!:

Speech Bubble Translation Literal Definition
Objection Tutol ako "I object" or "I am opposed"
Hold it Teka lang Wait
Take that Ayan "There!" (a pronoun used as interjection to call attention to something)
Gotcha Huli ka Caught you
Eureka Alam ko na I know it now
Not so fast Huy sandali Hey, just a moment
Overruled Tinanggihan Rejected
Got it Kuha ko na I got it now
Silence Tahimik Silence
Hang on Teka muna Wait a moment
Welcome Kumusta "How are you?" (used as a common Tagalog greeting, borrowed from Spanish)
Have a look Heto po "Here!" in a polite tone
Yes Opo "Yes" in a polite tone
'Scuse me Sensya po "Excuse me" or "I'm sorry" in a polite tone (borrowed from Spanish)
That's enough Tama na That's enough
Such insolence Walang hiya (You have) no shame

Unfortunately, court proceedings in the Philippines are done in English and not local languages. There have been attempts to use Tagalog in court proceedings in the past, but I cannot find a formal translation for "objection" and "overruled" in a legal context, so I decided to choose what I thought was best. I also considered "sinapawan" (lit. overtaken, overshadowed) for "overruled" considering what "overruled" literally means, but I chose "tinanggihan" because I think it better fits the context of a court proceeding.

What does it mean to be a bolero?

Our class had a fun awarding ceremony ie. "Mr. Most helpful", "Ms. Kikay", "Mr. Future Comedian" etc.

I won "Bolero of the Year" but what does that even mean? Fyi pala I grew up in the US but studying now in the PH. I know some tagalog kaunti lang but not familiar with a lot of words

Counterpart ng "salawal" or more specific na term sa "pang-itaas".
