Backdating to cancel insurance

My so got into an accident and crashed my car. My car was a write off and I went to an icbc insurance broker and they were able to backdate my insurance max 45 days to get a refund on the insurance since I did not use a rental vehicle. My broker said they can email icbc to further backdate the insurance tk get it further back to the date of the insurance to get more money back since I haven’t been driving it.

Now icbc is calling back saying that since I have been in possession of the car exceeding the date, they will invoice me for the insurance that I got back even though i didn’t even drive the car. It took awhile for it to get valued and towed.

Has this happened to anyone? Did anyone fight to is? I don’t think I can just ignore the invoice since they will likely make me pay it before I renew my other vehicle.

Thanks

Driving record status shows "HOLD" — Does it stay like this until PR, or can it be removed with a valid 3-year status document?

Hi everyone,

I downloaded my ICBC driving record today and noticed my status is showing as HOLD.

After doing some quick research online, I read that a HOLD typically happens if your temporary status in Canada has less than 6 months remaining.

Here is my situation: I recently got my updated status document, which is valid for another 3 years. Today, I went to ICBC to get this cleared up, but the representative told me the HOLD is due to being on a temporary status (study/work permit) and claimed it will remain on my record until I become a Permanent Resident.

I'm hoping to clarify which of the following is correct:

  1. Option A: The HOLD should be removed as long as my status document has more than 6 months of validity left (and I just need to get them to properly update my file).
  2. Option B: Any temporary resident status will permanently cause a HOLD on the driving record until PR is achieved.

Has anyone dealt with this before or knows ICBC's actual policy on this? Thanks in advance!

Leased cars and crashes

Hello r/icbc,

I would like to ask, if I crash a leased car in bc, and I don’t want to complete the repairs to it following a claim, will the lease company be able to repair the car without my say and in turn trigger my insurance rates to rise? How would this process occur in the real world, like would they track down the car asap to fix it or wait for it to be returned at the end of the lease to?

10 year old gets hit on a crosswalk, left with catastrophic life altering injuries. Driver gets no accountability and gets to keep on living his best life.

I’m trying to wrap My head around how this is fair or legal or actually scary
How Is a driver that has 10 violations including multiple speeding, driving when restricted etc have no accountability for hitting kids driving in an outside lane on a marked crosswalk?

Why does icbc let drivers like that stay on the road?? That’s a huge eye opener to how freakishly scary it is to drive on the road or walk on a sidewalk now.
Think of how many of these drivers at are not penalized continuing to drive jeopardizing everybody’s safety because of no fault insurance.

Somebody get away with not anything happen to them after completely altering a little kid’s life with a bad driving record to start

Where is the accountability? Where is the justice?

My daughter has left with 24 hour care and offer for my 1CBC not enough to cover a 24 hour care ?

Why do we even pay for insurance if we can’t get covered when we need it?

Why do we keep on favoring the criminals?
I don’t care what’s going on here

Why does British Columbia put up with this? Why do we all just sit here and put up with this?
I am just baffled right now

My dad got rear ended by another vehicle on highway and ICBC is trying to get my dad to pay damages to the vehicle that rear ended him

I am still fuming because my dad who is in his late 70's got rear ended by a vehicle behind him on a highway, he got out, took pics of both his vehicle and the other car's as well, while the driver of the Porsche just sat inside the car and told him o hurry up. My dad didnt incur any damages so decided not to file a claim (something that he should have done and it came back to haunt him). Long story short, a month later, he got an email from ICBC saying that the driver of the Porsche has field a claim and is seeking damages and if ICBC can have permission to share my dad's info with the Porshe driver so they can negotiate and come to an agreement directly and it would also be 'cheaper' to deal directly instead of going through ICBC. Anyways I sent a long email email to ICBC citing laws, rules for rear end situations that are in the ICBC manual. It's been more than a month and we still have not heard anything about this claim. My poor dad is shaken and is traumatized and has very little faith in ICBC now, even though he has always had an impeccable driving record. My question is can I do anything further for him, we have not sought legal advice yet, but can go through that route if needed as a last resort. We are absolutely repulsed with how this was carried out by ICBC.

P.s. I work for the provincial government and to see another crown corporation doing this to the general public, especially to our elders is just heart breaking. I will not be letting this go.

Anybody else have a high icbc driver risk factor score? How have you noticed it impact your premiums?

I recently got into my third at fault accident in 12 years. My driver risk factor score went from a low 0.97 to a 1.31. This now classifies me as a risky driver, which upsets me a lot because I don’t drive reckless, I’ve just had the poor luck of being the last car involved in a couple pile ups which automatically deem me responsible. My second accident of the 3 was a side swipe I unfairly got tied blame to as well.
I was curious to know other people’s scores and whether it caused your insurance to jump substantially? And if you have any advice on getting a lower premium?
I’m aware my insurance will go up. My car was totalled so I’m hoping to find a cheaper vehicle that may not cost as much to insure. Besides that, I’m just not sure what else I can do to prevent my insurance from being too high for me to afford.
Also, I do take accountability for poor driving habits I’ve picked up on over the past few years. I am not someone who drives reckless, but I do have some poor habits I will change and lock into going forward.

Car hit by horse and buggy

Need help. Yesterday took my girls to a birthday party in Surrey. It was on a hobby farm with a bunch of small animals. The lady who runs the little farm was giving horse and buggy rides. I have no clue how she managed but she backed her horse and buggy into the side of my car leaving a pick dent and 2 big deep scratches. What makes me the most furious was how nonchalant she was about it. I am receiving my new car this Tuesday and was supposed to trade in my old car. After hesitation she gave me her phone number DL number and address. What are my next steps. I have no clue if it would be her home or business insurance or if I would go through icbc to have it fixed. I refuse to pay anything to have this fixed and have several pictures and even a video of her hitting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Odometer number incorrect on insurance form, noticed months later

I got insurance on my new (used) car. Just looking at my form and noticed the insurance place input my odometer reading 10,000 km less than I told them. It’s been like 4-5 months.

Was wondering if it’s going to cause issues down the road. Plan on contacting them on Monday

Was pulled over with another car and was mistakenly given his ticket

Cop pulled over mine and another driver behind me… I was let off with a warning but the other kid got a fail to display N (I’m a full licensed driver with class 5)

How do I go about removing from my record? Is past the date as it now shows on my extended record but have no physical ticket as the other driver received the copy..

Edit: to the people saying “no need to dispute a warning”… I received the warning but the officer punched the other drivers ticket under my license # (when I was supposed to only have a warning) now it’s showing on my extended record search. Need to have this removed asap

got a speeding ticket on my N, how screwed am i?

gonna cut straight to the chase, i have a class 7 N, i made a mistake and got a speeding ticket, the ticket was 21-40kmh over the speed limit and was 3 points. i’m not concerned about the fine as i will pay it, more concerned about getting my license prohibited. this was my first ticket and i asked the officer he said since it’s my first ticket and only 3 points that it wouldn’t unless i get another one which i know they cant dictate and it’s in the hands of icbc, i just wanna know how screwed i am.
thanks!

icbc bus situation question

I have an upcoming N road test and need help with a question. If there’s a bus in front of me and it’s a two way lane street (only a yellow line diving) should i wait behind it or try and go past it. I am the blue car going straight, the bus is pull to the side. Am I obligated to wait until the bus moves and hold traffic or bypass it even if i’m not 100% sure there’s enough space for me to move.

Forest Service Road 201

With the current wildfire situation in the Okanagan, Kelowna residents have been taking FSR 201 to take a shortcut to Penticton. I remember being told a long time ago that there is no coverage off paved roads in BC, but when I search ICBC's FAQ I can't find that policy. Are injuries also not covered? Are any gravel roads in the province covered, or is it strictly coverage on pavement only? Can you buy off road coverage for your truck like you can for an ATV or dirt bike? If you file a claim for an accident on FSR 201, will ICBC just close it? I just want to be fully aware of the risks; I haven't actually taken the road.

I got a ticket july 30. Not in icbc or service bc system.

Im just wondering what are the chances the officer didnt submit my ticket? What should I do? Should I just wait until I renew my insurance in October and say il pay any outstanding tickets then? Did I get lucky?

Is that even allowed, sheet tainted windows

* tinted

I see that pretty often, can’t really believe driver is fully able to see their surroundings, therefore provide a safe driving to others.

Of course , they didn’t even see me from the opposite sidewalk taking a photo as they were lining at the red light

is there such thing as an ICBC Bill of Sale document? (Buying a moped with no papers in hope of registering it down the line)

I'm planning on buying a moped from an owner who doesnt have the registration, (i believe the vehicle was either inherited by the current owner or abandoned on their property) with the hopes I can request a vehicle record search with ICBC and get the vehicle registered under my name later down the line. My question to anyone who might know about this process would be, is this a bad idea that wont work? and/or what I can do before and during the purchase to maximize my chances of success with a future registration. I saw that ICBC recommends having a "completed bill of sale" as a supporting document for the search, but I can't find a template for this outside of the traditional ownership transfer papers you would use when buying a vehicle and transferring reg in a typical scenario. If anyone has any tips of this subject they would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

High insurance quotes question

I’m looking to buy a new car but I’m getting high insurance quotes. I have no claims and my driver factor is 0.668. The following are the quotes I got. It has $2M liability and $500 deductible. Are these normal for new cars? Or is it because I have less than 10 years BC driving experience? I will use this for commuting more than 15 kms daily. I live in Lower Mainland. I’m just trying to understand if it’s because of my experience or because it’s a new car that‘s causing the high premium.

$700/mo - 2026 Tesla Model 3 RWD

$360/mo - 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

$355/mo - 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid

$380/mo - 2026 Toyota Corolla Gas
