What exactly is transmission line harmonics?

Say for the purposes of this demonstration I have a brand new install of a very large set of solid state electronics that when under load will draw 2 MW from the transmission grid with almost instantaneous notice (no battery bank).

Let’s further say that I’ve had a phone call from the on site grid engineers who’ve told me I’ve not only started to make the lights in the building dim but engineers a few miles away have noticed a harmonic phenomena in the electrical grid. What on earth does this mean and is it really a harmonic?

Opinions on Lippman’s C++ primer?

I’ve had this book for a while now and I found it incredibly detailed and helpful when I was using basic C++ functions for my PhD but now I’m wanting to introduce some structure to my learning and get a good grip on some concepts. I’m using learncpp alongside it but I just wanted to know what the word on the street was about this title? Thanks

Underpaid and overqualified

I took my current job fresh out of university having gained a PhD in computer science with 2 years teaching experience. I earn £32,000 a year and my boss told me in my last performance review that despite me performing excellently I’ll never be promoted because they don’t have the space on the team despite 4 people leaving in the last year alone.

I’ve applied for several other roles but none of them are what I want to work on so I’m effectively stuck here on a low wage unable to progress my career

Looking for structured, high-quality Intermediate to Advanced C++ courses

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to take my programming skills to the next level. I already have a solid grasp of the absolute basics but now I want to get into intermediate and eventually advanced concepts for C++

My main issue right now is finding the right platform. I’m pretty reluctant to buy courses on Udemy upfront because the quality varies so wildly, and I’d much rather test out the teaching style first. I’m looking for suggestions on structured courses (video or text-based) that focus heavily on intermediate-to-advanced topics. I’ve already checked out the usual recommendations but I’m after something more structured I can use as a base point

Steam performance overlay keeps randomly appearing when using mouse and keyboard

As title says I bound the overlay hotkey to numpad asterisk and despite never hitting the key, the FPS overlay keeps randomly popping up when I hit combinations like “W + Space” when playing the game. Is this a me issue or a steam glitch?

Leaving your job soon? Don’t you dare hand off or re-assign tasks!

I’m kind of at a loss at the moment because I was leading a major infrastructure project alongside one of our senior managers as a semi formal secondment. I just found out today that he’s leaving and we have no replacement. For context this guy basically built all the infrastructure we use and none of it is documented anywhere. I’ve discussed this with my line manager and he basically said “suck it up I want this project done”. I’m screwed

What do you do when a senior colleague leaves?

How to break into this from HPC and learn Kubernetes?

I’ve got about 2 years of experience supporting a large Linux cluster as well as probably a year worth of docker experience. I’ve also got 7 years experience working on Python and C++ but aside from that my “tech stack” is really poor.

The short end of it is that I’m trying to change careers and break into the DevOps world and I’m really unsure how to build my tech stack. Especially since my current employer won’t support any training budget for me to upskill on my current position. I’ve browsed some books and courses but it all seems quite expensive to break into this especially for limited gain when I’d be competing with people who have a lot more experience than me when applying for jobs.

If I wanted to say gain more detailed knowledge on Kubernetes and Docker; where would I start? Are there any good training manuals or things I can do to land interviews

For me it was when my team recently shrunk from 6 to 3 including me. I’ve been trying to do the work of at least another 1.5FTEs without any extra pay and direct confirmation that I’ll never be promoted I’ve simply “checked out”. What was your moment of realisation?
