The Sonic Movie 4 trailer is nearly upon us, so I figured it was appropriate to time travel to the past and remember how hype the Sonic Movie 3 trailer release was.
I think the way they should do that is to challenge his confidence.
Sonic sees himself in a particular way, and we can see that in the post credits scene of Sonic movie 3. He calls himself the "fastest creature in the universe", so he is rather self-indulgent and cocky. But what happens when that title of his is challenged? I think that would really make him question himself and who his really is. We already see this in action when the Metal Sonic Drones arrive and Sonic had to be saved by Amy, he's out of his depth here and I think he'd have a hard time accepting that.
Amy could take this even further. Amy could have this image of a great hero in her mind, her believing that hero to be Sonic. This would put even greater pressure on Sonic as he struggles to fight this new threat, it could give him some imposter syndrome and make him think that maybe he isn't a great as he thought. He would struggle to live up to Amy and by extension himself.
Metal Sonic would enhance this by being the challenge to Sonic's identity. Metal Sonic would really push Sonic to his limits in terms of his abilities. Shadow sorta did but that was different, Shadow didn't really care for Sonic and just wanted to be left alone. Metal Sonic will be going directly for Sonic and his identity. Metal Sonic won't just knock Sonic out and leave he'd beat the lights out of him, maybe even kill him.
And Sonic would not be used to fighting such a ruthless threat so he'd be unprepared. And as a result that would really ding his self-perception because HE'S supposed to be the fastest and the best, but Metal Sonic is better. At least, on the surface level
There's the thing, Metal Sonic copies the power. But there is one thing Metal Sonic will never have, the heart. That's what makes Sonic who he is, something Metal Sonic could never replicate. Sonic fighting spirit, his refusal to give up, his ability to learn and grow, his natural leadership, how he inspires others. That's what defines who Sonic is, not his powers.
From this revelation we'd get a slightly different Sonic. He'd be a little more stoic, less self indulgent. The outward displays of cockiness like calling himself the "fastest creature in the universe" would be replaced with a more relaxed and effortless confidence. Sonic doesn't need to hype himself up anymore, he knows exactly who he is and his actions will speak for themselves.
He'd still be a bit of a goofball and he'd still crack some jokes, but he'd overall be more chill about it. And overall Movie Sonic would give off more of the effortless badass energy than the tryhard child he often came off as in the past. He'd stop trying to look cool and he'd just naturally be cool.
All this time and I’ve never actually played that game. That will be rectified shortly, but I’d like to know your guy’s thoughts and opinions on the title
Imagine Sonic’s reaction when he sees a bunch of copies of the robot that gave him and his family so much trouble in Sonic Movie 2. Caused him so much grief trying to destroy one Death Egg Robot, imagine the reaction to seeing a bunch of them.
It’s pretty in line with the mass produced theme since we do already have Mass Produced Metal Sonic’s, so it makes sense to have Mass Produced Death Egg Robots too. I assume Eggman was very proud of the Death Egg Robot from Sonic Movie 2 so it makes sense that with unlimited resources he’d go crazy and make a bunch of them.
And again, imagine everyone’s reaction. They’d have to go against a bunch of copies of the Death Egg Robot when they barely defeated one, it would really heighten the stakes.
Poor kid can’t catch a break
It would be a nice change of pace since Tom has been the one to do so in the past.
And it only makes sense for the film with Amy to have the most important woman in Sonic’s life talk to him, Maddie doesn’t get as much love in these films as Tom so this would be cool for her
I think it would be cool if Sonic and his friends were fully recognized as heroes by the general public after saving the world(again). Sonic and his friends would be living legends, and would start getting a lot more attention.
Sonic would be more active, spending less time in the Wachowski household and spending more seeing the world and helping anyone he can. He wouldn’t be moving out or anything, but he has a little more independence and spends less time chilling and more time getting out there. After seeing what a world without his protection could look like with Eggmans bad future Sonic and his friends would start acting a lot more like Earths protectors, and maybe revel in their newfound fame a little bit.
Amy in particular would move into Sonic’s old cave, though it would be a LOT nicer then when Sonic was living there. It would be a nice full circle moment(It would also help that Sonic and Amy do not live in the same household to avoid them feeling like siblings)
Shadow would go off on his own to find himself, which would be further explored in a Shadow spinoff project
And the films post credits scenes would be Silver the Hedgehog. What he’d be doing I have no clue, but he’d be there.
The after credits scene would set up the Shadow spinoff.

I remember people saying “AMY NEEDS TO BE IN SONIC 3”, but that never made sense to me. I feel like people wanted that because she redeemed Shadow in SA2, but Amy deserves more than to be a tool for another characters arc
The film had to focus on Shadow, introducing another new character on top of that would have resulted in one of 2 outcomes: Shadow doesn’t get enough time or Amy doesn’t get enough time
And because they nixed her from Movie 3 she can have her very own film to shine, if the fans who wanted her in the third film had their way she would not have gotten the attention she deserves
Yall remember the Mario Galaxy movie and how Rosalina barely got any time to shine because that film also had to introduce Yoshi and Bowser Jr? That’s what would have happened to Amy if she was a main character in Sonic Movie 3
Goes to show that us fans don’t know what we really want a lot of the time
One might think it’s Eggman since he is the main villain of the franchise, but I believe it’s that Metal Sonic for a multitude of reasons

Eggman always saw Sonic as more of a nuisance, a pest getting in his way. Eggmans true goal was never “defeat Sonic”, it was always “take over the world”. Sonic just so happens to get In the way of that, defeating Sonic is only a means to an end for Eggman.
But Metal Sonic was created with the express goal of “destroying Sonic”. Not as a means to an end like Eggman, but as his ultimate goal.

Eggman bounces off Sonic so well because his philosophy is directly opposed to Sonic’s. Sonic represents freedom and Eggman represents oppression.
Eggman inflicts that oppression through his machines, but he is not a machine himself. Eggman is just that, a man. Metal Sonic is a cold calculating machine, everything Eggman represents put into practice.
Adding onto that, Metal Sonic is forever subservient to Eggman, he can never be free like Sonic because he always has to answer to someone else. Even when Metal tries to break free he is still shackled by Eggmans programming to “defeat Sonic”. Most of the time Metal can’t even talk, Metal is denied one of Sonic’s most valued methods of self-expression. Metal Sonic doesn’t just inflict oppression, he is oppressed.
Eggman merely adopted the dark, Metal Sonic was born in it

Metal Sonic was designed off of Sonic, so all of Sonic’s speed and skills are also Metal Sonic’s. Metal Sonic even knows how Sonic thinks.

On top of all that, Metal shares Sonic’s resilience. No matter how many times he is defeated and/or destroyed he ALWAYS comes back to continue the fight. Neither he or Sonic will ever quit. Sonic may win a brawl with the machine, but it doesn’t matter because Metal will ALWAYS come back soon after to stand in his way once again.
Sonic and Metal locked in a stop and start battle to prove who the superior Sonic truly is. Eggman may challenge Sonic’s ideals, but Metal challenges Sonic’s identity.

All of this ties back to the first theme this franchise has ever conveyed, dating back to Sonic’s debut on the Megadrive and baked into the core of this franchise’s identity. The beauty of nature vs the brutality of machines.
Sonic vs METAL Sonic
(This is pulled from a convo I had with u/scrybesilver. Thanks Scry, I hadn’t really brainstormed this in a while until you brought it up)
Amy is a young hedgehog orphan girl, she dreams of one day being a great hero but lacks the self esteem to go for it. One day, a bright pink streak of light flys across the sky. Amy investigates and finds that it is a Chaos Emerald, which she keeps around as a trinket.
One day, Amy’s Tarot cards tells her of a great hero on another world. So she throws together a hammer to house her Chaos Emerald and goes off to find the great hero her fortune has foretold she would meet.
She has some trouble finding the hero of course, the galaxy is a large place. But one day she see a bright flash of pure Chaos Energy in the sky, the Eclipse Cannon explosion. “This must be it” Amy thinks, and so off she goes to Earth.
On Earth, she finds the great hero she has been looking for. Sonic The Hedgehog, in danger? That’s…strange, isn’t he the great hero? Welp, might as well help him out
Amy is ecstatic, the great hero she has been looking for for so long is right in front of her. And so her and Sonic set off on their adventure. The robots are looking for the Chaos Emeralds, so Amy and Sonic have to find them before they fall into the wrong hands.
In their search the Metal Sonic and his army are always right behind them, as if they are tracking them. Little did they know that Metal Sonic was using Amy’s Chaos Emerald housed within her hammer to follow them.
This would lead to them falling into Metal Sonic’s trap. And Amy’s Chaos Emerald is stolen from her
Amy would feel SUPER bad about this. Because of her, Metal Sonic has all the Chaos Emeralds. She would then have an emotional talk with Sonic. Sonic would express how he feels he let her and his friends down, this would show Amy that nobody is perfect and help her get out of her funk
As her emotions grow, Amy’s hammer begins glowing without the Chaos Emerald and flys twords her. Amy realizes that she too has Chaos powers. BUT, they manifest differently. Amy cannot use her Chaos Energy to run fast or punch strong, but she can use it to manipulate her hammer. Whether these powers came from prolonged exposure to a Chaos Emerald or she had them the whole time is unclear. But regardless, this is who she is. And she is going to do everything she can to fix this disaster. She, Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Shadow go to stop Neo Metal and his robot army.
Amy losses her hammer at some point during the battle, rendering her powerless.
Amy is initially overwhelmed with emotion, what is she going to do now? She feels like running away, she’s just a normal girl she can’t do this. But she stops, takes a deep breath, and finds the courage to stand up.
Neo has everyone on the ropes. But Amy begins to approach Neo, maybe she can reason with him. She is completely powerless, but she approaches Metal anyway. Sonic attempts to stop Amy but Amy insists, she has to try.
Amy tells Neo Metal that she knows how it feels that you’re not good enough, but that he doesn’t have to take that out on everyone else. “You always have a choice” Amy says.
But, Neo is too far gone and attacks Amy. Amy is saved by Sonic. She may not have been able to redeem Metal, but at least she bought her friends time to recover. Without Amy Sonic and his friends would have lost
Amy and her friends work together to end Metal Sonic once and for all.
In the ending of the film a time skip occurs. Amy thanks Sonic for helping her find herself. She prepares to leave, not really wanting to. But Sonic and his friends have a not so little surprise for her. They take her to Sonic’s cave, completely overhauled. It barely resembles that dirty cave Sonic lived in all those years, it’s a proper house made just for Amy. Along with this, Tails gives Amy a brand new hammer.
Amy is overwhelmed with emotion, this is everything she ever wanted. A home
She decorates it to her heart’s content. The cave is completely different from how we saw it when Sonic was living there.
But there is one thing from the old cave that remains, Sonic’s drawing of him and Longclaw. But around the old drawing are new drawings of older Sonic, Tom, Maddie, Knuckles, Tails, Shadow and Amy.
