Thinking of making a homebrew Deltarune port to Xbox One/Series consoles. Thoughts?
Note: not an announcement post, just asking for thoughts
It seems feasible. There's a project called Butterscotch that launches game maker data files, and as it's open source it seems trivial to compile it for UWP (the format of homebrew programs for the Xbox). It should just simply be able to run Deltarune after that point, as Butterscotch is the exact same framework UTDR ports to other devices (android, iOS, even the PS2 & PS3). It should be reasonably possible, especially since these are newer consoles that will need less optimization than a phone or a PS2.
The only downsides are that you would need a Microsoft developer account to run it, which requires submitting an ID and a photo of yourself to Microsoft, which sucks, and makes it inaccessible to most people. It'll also take a long time to get the chapter switching system functioning, as it relies on a game maker function called game_change() which is notoriously incompatible with the sandboxed environment Xbox games run in. Using it directly without HEAVY modifications to the code results in crashes which makes it hard to use. People in fact theorize this is why Deltarune hasn't come to Xbox yet. However, it could theoretically be possible to bypass it assuming I can replace the call with some sort of workaround function that gives a similar result, but complies with the Xbox sandbox.
Prior to the implementation of game_change(), people had already gotten home made Undertale and Deltarune Chapter 1 & 2 Demo versions running, so I know for a fact that it is technically possible, the game_change() thing is just a massive hurdle for something most people probably won't bother playing. I'm asking here to gauge how many people would be interested in a project like this, as if there are many people who would like to play it and are willing to put up with Microsoft's shitty ID policy I wouldn't mind working on it. I already have a few ideas on how to bypass game_change in mind but before I put the effort into their testing and execution I would rather be sure there's interest first before I go through all that.
So with that said, what are your thoughts? Would you play it? Is it a worthwhile endeavor?
Edit: forgot to mention, AI will absolutely NEVER be used in ANY of my projects. I have severe moral objections to its usage and I refuse to use it for my projects. I know this is a pertinent issue, and there are a lot of AI slop ports of games lately, but this would be fully hand made by me
Edit 2: Upon further examination, I would not be able to use Butterscotch as it doesn't support WAD V23 bytecode which Deltarune relies on, but forks like Cinnamon are compatible. Apologies for the inaccuracies
Edit 3: Cinnamon and most other open source gm runners are incompatible with v22 & 23 bytecode, but the solution to get around that could be as simple as using the official yoyorunner and simply targetting the individual chapters. It would also need to include a patcher to remove all calls to game_change() in the code, but that's pretty reasonable to do, I could use the source code from UndertaleModTool to edit the win files upon launching each chapter. This would mean you would have a separate program for each chapter (e.g. a Chapter 1 launcher, a Chapter 2 launcher, etc.) Then it would have to target a shared directory for save data. This also seems rather trivial.
