Finished Paper Mario 64: It was pretty good.

I wasn't expecting to like this game as much as I did, given I wasn't a big fan of TTYD but it did surprise me. This game has a lot fun chapters, but the battle system is obviously inferior to its successor in most ways.

I need to give Watt the MVP. Her Electro Dash piercing through Defence was so useful, plus Turbo Charge boosting Mario's attack? Made a ton of fights infinitely easier.

My current ranking of all the Mario RPGs I've played is:

  1. TOK (It would take a herculean feat of music, visuals, and writing to top this for me)

  2. Sparks of Hope

  3. Dream Team

  4. Brothership

  5. 64

  6. Superstar Saga (though I haven't finished that so we'll see if this changes)

  7. TTYD

That last Paper Mario I can play (through legal means) is Sticker Star. I will play it, and I feel like I'll probably enjoy it. Maybe.

Turning Frosted Glacier from NSMBU into a settlement

I honestly think this world is one of the less visually interesting places in NSMBU, so I focused more on the Cooligans and the slopes they slide down (hence the houses themselves being slopes), and the pipes they come in and out of.

Also Birdo is here. Why? Why not?

What are some of your headcanon relationships between characters?

I've said and shown this before, but I love the idea that Rosalina tries to make Nabbit a more responsible person through... slightly concerning methods, like making him take care of Baby Rosalina. This headcanon has actually kind of made me come around on Baby Rosalina.

KIND OF.

(OC) Turning another NSMBU world into a settlement

I was mostly inspired by the giant rock pillars you see in the background of Rock Candy Mines levels. I also imagine there are other cities on other pillars. Also also, after drawing the little Dry Bones conductor, I realize why Odyssey Central likes those guys so much.

Hot take: I kinda want Things to return.

Gameplay-wise, they might've been horrid (at least, so I'm told, I've never played SS and I played about 10 minutes of CS 7 years ago), but conceptually, not only are they really funny, but the idea of your super attacks being collectibles has a lot of potential for exploration. Maybe they could work like Crystal Star attacks where they have unique action commands. To be fair, they are way more Things then Crystal Stars, so maybe they should be more like Star Spirit special moves.

On a final note, I think it would be funny if the Things had super overdramatic names like Treasures in Pikmin. Call the Jackhammer the Planet Splitter or smth idk

If you're wondering where so many 64 and Super characters are, I've only played about half of 64 and never played Super, so I could really rank the guys I knew a lot about through playthroughs online.

I honestly think that Acorn Plains is the most aesthetically pleasing NSMBU area. I like how it uses cooler blues and greens than other "Grassland" worlds in Mario, plus the weird rocky structures are very striking. I like it so much I came up with my own fanmade center of populace for it.

I'm not even talking about this from a "gender norms" angle, I'm just mad that every time I want a shiny Gallade (a Pokemon I like infinitely more than Gardevoir), I either have to find a way to hunt him specifically, or catch a shiny Ralts and pray to God I won the coin flip (of which I have lost multiple times before).

It's worse because it feels a lot less justified than others. Combee makes sense to only evolve into Vespiquen if female because only female bees become queen bees. With Gallade, you already have the criteria, just make it so that a Ralts only evolves into a Gallade with a Dawn Stone.

A part of me wishes that Dry Bowser was his own characters and not just Bowser with his skin burned off.

It's mostly because you have to switch to Goombario/Goombella to use it. It means that every single time to you encounter a new enemy, you to:

  1. (if you weren't already using the Goombas) waste a turn and switch to them

  2. Waste another to do the Tattle

  3. Waste YET ANOTHER TURN to switch back to the partner you actually wanted to use.

I know there's that one badge in TTYD that allows you to switch without using a turn which definitely helps, but if the next game brings back Tattle, I'd rather the game does it automatically after defeating an enemy, or at least make Quick Change a build-in feature. For now, it's probably my least favorite part of the "Stage" battle system.

Again, if you're unfamiliar, this post and this post should clear things up.

I'm very proud of my idea for the Scriblings because it's doing my favorite thing about the modern games (turning mundane, paper-y things into more fantasy concepts), but in a slightly less "HaHa FuNnI pApEr!!!11!" way that people seem to not like.
