Looking specifically for Native Alaskan cultural input

Good morning my fellow Alaskans, I have a question. My husband is Inupiaq and I’m Muskogee Creek (from Oklahoma) In my culture we smudge new homes to remove espookies and bad energy, do Native Alaskans have something like this in their culture? My husband grew up in Oklahoma and isn’t familiar with his culture unfortunately and we would like to learn more about it.

Hair loss post-op

All the ladies who had their ovaries removed, what are we doing for hair loss? I’m doing HRT but it’s still thinning rapidly and I’m only 12 weeks post op. I’ve had a gastric bypass so I’m already thin, I can’t afford to lose much more.

Treg…

I swear the more I see this man’s political ads the more I want to vomit. The sad thing is he’s saying things they all want to hear, keep Alaska Alaskan, keep the lower 48 bs out..but hey look at me I want to keep girls sports, I mean sure I think women are just meant for breeding and shouldn’t really make their own choices but SPORTS!!

11 weeks post op and I did it!

Finally had “relations” with my husband last night and cried afterwards, not because of pain but because THERE WAS NO PAIN!!! For the first time in 20 years sex didn’t hurt! So for all the ladies who are deciding whether it’s worth it or not this is just another lovely after effect that truly makes it all worth it. Thanks for attending my Ted talk as I’m not willing to shout this from the rooftops to my friends and family lol.

Should I find a different artist?

So I’ve spent a while researching my next tattoo and finally picked an artist that I feel does the kind of work I’m looking to get. This is a picture of the rough idea of what I want to get. My main focus is the raven reading a book with some other details. When asked what size I was wanting I said between 5-6 inches and she told me “you won’t be able to get hardly any detail you want in something so small” I’m doing upper arm and I don’t want a huge piece, do you think maybe I should find another artist? Or is she right that this specific tattoo would need to be larger?

ETA: Thank you everyone for calming my fear of just having an artist upsell me on a larger tattoo. I now know it needs to be larger and that’s ok.

I absolutely hate my birthday

My birthday is Tuesday and I’m already dreading it. My dad’s birthday was the day before mine and he passed 9 years ago. I feel like I can’t even enjoy mine anymore because the man I shared a birthday party with every year is no longer here. Also a bunch of small stuff, I didn’t get a birthday card from my job (they hand them out at the beginning of the birthday month with everybody’s well wishes on them) It’s something so small but it made me feel insignificant and sad. My darling husband waited until today to even order my present (but it’s the thought that counts, right) I wanted to go to this restaurant we went to back in February only to find out it’s permanently closed…just stupid stuff but oh I’m over it. Yes I’m sure I sound like a whiney brat with 1st world problems but it just sucks when the one day that’s just yours doesn’t go the way you hoped.

How do you stay sympathetic to a friend who makes horrible choices?

My best friend and I have been friends for close to 30 years and she is the most amazing person ever. With that being said she has absolutely the worst luck with men. At this point I think she’s purposely picking the ones who will screw her over. She lives in a rural area so she doesn’t exactly have a large pool of options so she ends up using dating apps and long distance relationships.

How can I remain sympathetic when each one crashes and burns, I’m really just out of things to say. I’m always supportive and try to reassure her that it isn’t her but secretly I just want to scream quitting picking the first guy who pays attention to you. If I had a dollar for every time she’s said “this is the one” I’d be rich.

Maybe I’m being a bad friend for even thinking this but I just want to know what you all would do in this situation.

Companies that prey on the elderly.

My mom will be 77 this year and has the early stages of dementia and it absolutely pisses me off that she gets no less than 20 spam calls a day. How the hell did people even get her number, she never uses the internet so it’s not like she put her phone number somewhere online. It seems to me there’s a leak somewhere in the social security/Medicare systems because 99% of them started when she started to get it.

She asked me yesterday if she had Medicare A&B and I asked why “someone called the other day and asked”. I know their crap because I work in medical billing and I hear from patients all the time that they never agreed to switch their insurance but do remember someone asking questions on a phone call. At this point I’m going to have to restrict her call settings to only contacts and I feel it’s stupid that I have to do the things I do for my child to protect my parent.

Hello Darlin’ shop in Wasilla

I’ve never visited this hair salon in Wasilla but it absolutely disgusts me to see their social media post shaming a homeless man sleeping outside their shop. Yes I know we are facing a problem with our homeless population but publicly shaming them isn’t the answer. This to me is not the Alaska way, I really hope the owner of the shop learns a very humbling lesson for their bad choices.

Fried potatoes w/onions

Ok I need guidance, for the life of me I cannot get a single batch of fried potatoes done properly. They either burn or turn out all mushy and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I don’t have an exact recipe I just go by what my mom did.

3 pounds peeled Yukon gold potatoes cut into about 1/2 inch pieces.
1/2 of a jumbo sweet onion
Roughly 1 teaspoon each of salt, pepper and garlic powder
Enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of the pan.

Ok so here’s where it all goes wrong. Most recipes I have seen says let oil heat until rippling then add potatoes-ok I got this, let cook 10 minutes then add onion and seasoning-ok I can do that- flip and cook another 10 minutes or until done. Nope I don’t have this and it’s horrible every time!! Can anyone help me out?

Advice needed!

I have 2 pups, Samson is 2 1/2 and Georgie is about 5 months old. We’ve had our big guy about a year and the baby about 2 months. Things are going pretty good but my question is how to deal with the jealousy. It doesn’t matter who is getting the attention the other one loses their shit. We make sure to love on and play with each of them individually to give them their own special time, we actively play with them together and it’s just not getting better. This morning I was petting Georgie and 95 pound Samson launched himself into my lap to get in between us. They never fight each other physically it’s just attention seeking behavior. Is this a common dynamic in the beginning or is there something I’m doing wrong?

People underestimate the power of a good fruit cobbler.

Growing up my dad made cobbler all the time and seeing as I was his shadow I learned the recipe and have made it all my life. I grew up in OK but moved to AK 2 years ago and so many people have never even had it! So I got to thinking maybe others haven’t as well and I’d share my dad’s recipe.

1 cup self rising flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup whole milk
1/2 teaspoon of salt
4 tablespoons of melted butter
Frozen fruit of your choice (I love peach the most and if you do too then definitely add a touch of cinnamon)
Additional 1/4 cup of white sugar.
Mix all ingredients minus the fruit and 1/4 of sugar. Pour into a well buttered 9x9 dish, place fruit evenly on top (batter will rise up between it while cooking) sprinkle the 1/4 cup of sugar on top of the fruit. Bake for 50 minutes at 350° or until the top is brown. I vary here a little from dad as I will sprinkle a tablespoon of cinnamon sugar on top in the last 5 minutes and turn the oven to broil.

Lord of the Flies

(Not sure if pop culture flair is appropriate) Ok so I’m pretty sure every GenX had to read this book in school right? Anyone catch the Netflix series? It took me down a rabbit hole of what all books we had to read have been turned into movies or series.
