I just bought this Mew and people had said it looks better in person but wow… It has so much shine I have a slight headache after looking at it 😅 (not kidding)
Won this Houndoom at auction on eBay recently. Paid ~$2k. Thoughts on long-term potential?
Recently added this skyridge kabutops to the collection. Love the design of this card 😮💨
These are some of my favorite vintage cards. Cool background story too.
Among the earliest and most iconic releases in Pokémon’s long history, few sets carry as much intrigue and nostalgia as the Japanese Masaki Promo cards. Released between 1997 and 1998, these exclusive promos tell the story of Pokémon’s beginnings, creativity, and the unique fan engagement that defined the TCG’s first generation.
The Origin of the Masaki Program
The “Masaki Campaign” (まさきのふしぎなカードキャンペーン) was named after the in-game character Masaki, better known to Western fans as Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon Storage System. The promotion was run by CoroCoro Comic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, and it offered fans a chance to obtain special evolutions that could not be pulled from any standard booster pack.
How the Promotion Worked
To participate, collectors had to mail in specific cards—typically basic Pokémon that could evolve through trading in the video games—along with a small form from CoroCoro Comic. In exchange, the Pokémon Company would mail back an evolved version of that Pokémon, printed as a Masaki Promo card.
This mail-in campaign was both innovative and risky: players had to physically send in their cards, making it a challenge for today’s collectors to find mint-condition versions that survived the process.
The Pokémon Lineup
A total of five Pokémon were released through the Masaki campaign:
Alakazam (Masaki’s Trade Promo)
Machamp (Masaki’s Trade Promo)
Gengar (Masaki’s Trade Promo)
Golem (Masaki’s Trade Promo)
Omastar (Masaki’s Trade Promo)
Each card features the unique “Trade Evolution” theme, directly referencing the game mechanic where these Pokémon evolve through trading.
Design & Artwork
The Masaki Promos use the Original Japanese Base Set layout, complete with the old-school yellow borders, bold fonts, and the classic Pocket Monsters logo. They also include a small “Masaki” identifier mark in the corner, distinguishing them from standard printings.
Notably, each card features distinct artwork from illustrator Ken Sugimori and others from Pokémon’s earliest design team, making them historical pieces of TCG art.
Rarity and Value
Because the promotion required mailing cards back and forth, many submissions were damaged or lost, and mint copies are exceptionally rare today. The Alakazam and Gengar are the most sought-after, with PSA 10s fetching thousands of dollars due to their low population counts.
Authenticity is crucial — counterfeit Masaki cards exist, especially on the secondary market. Serious collectors often verify PSA or BGS certification before buying.
Legacy and Cultural Impact
The Masaki Promos are remembered not just as rare collectibles, but as a snapshot of Pokémon’s earliest fan interaction. They represent a time when Pokémon’s creators were experimenting with engagement ideas that blurred the line between the video games and the TCG.
These promos predate modern digital events and reflect a hands-on, physical connection between players and the brand — something that’s almost unimaginable today.
Final Thoughts
The Japanese Masaki Promos are more than just cards — they’re a piece of Pokémon’s living history. Their unique distribution, nostalgic artwork, and connection to the core concept of “trading” make them an essential highlight for any serious collector.
Owning a Masaki card isn’t just about value — it’s about holding a tangible artifact from Pokémon’s earliest and most creative era.
Can someone help me understand why this card got a 3? There must be a crease or major dent somewhere I am missing? Or is it something else? Just trying to learn what to look out for in the future. Thank you!
Love this card and surprisingly didn’t break the bank!
Just added this iconic vintage card to the collection 🍾
Aside from the left to right centering it is a very clean copy.
I think these 2 are my all-time favorites. Comment your favorite card/set of cards.
Considering selling some of my childhood collection. I’m trying to list this one honestly. I am thinking “excellent” on eBay and leave someone room if they want to send straight to grading. I think it gets a PSA 5-6. Open to others thoughts but it feels like it’s in better condition than a lot of the raw cards I see.
Appreciate any and all feedback.
Hey all, I am considering cross grading this card to PSA with a minimum grade of 9.
Given all subgrades are at least 9 do you think it has a decent chance of being successful?
Any tips to improve my odds of success would be appreciated as well! Thanks in advance.
Working on completing this set. I think it may be my favorite outside of OG base set.
Anybody know what is going on with this card? A PSA 8 sold for $2,500 recently.
Received some new additions to my vintage collection today! Love the nostalgia these cards bring.
It doesn’t get much better than these 3 from the original base set 🤩
The rainbow effect on the holo makes me think it is fake?
