Car radio and antenna setup inspiration?

As I study for my Technician license, I'm also dreaming about how I'll set up radios/antennas as I climb the ham ladder. I am renting in an HOA, and I do a few long driving trips each month, so I'll probably spend the majority of my ham time in the car.

While daydreaming about this, where are some good places/who are some good people to look to for sturdy, clean, practical (hatchback access, quick removal for parking garages, won't get ripped off in the car wash, controls within easy reach while driving, etc.).

My daughter has Pinterest boards for her interests. Maybe I should look there? :-)

Can't wait to talk/chat with mobile users about their experiences setting up their vehicles!

Camp David Party?

I lost count of how many Blackhawk helicopters went north and south, back and forth today between what must be Camp David and somewhere down south (Andrews AFB? Davison AAF)?

Anyone have an idea about what was going on? The activity was from this afternoon through about 22:00.

Tracking unlicensed transmitters

I just started studying for my Technician license, and I'm reading a lot of posts about ham radio. There are a lot of comments and statements (mostly related to the bands I'll have access to with my Technician license) about unlicensed users.

Is this a serious issue? What makes it a serious issue (other than the penalties in the regulations)? Are there governments in countries where certain agencies monitor the airwaves and locate unlicensed users? How would one ham know that a broadcaster is not licensed?

As I write this, I'm thinking, "Oh, great, this smacks of 'I'm asking for a friend.'" So let me be clear that I'm asking this question out of curiosity and a desire to learn. I do NOT have any equipment that I am using illegally. Really!

New to JetPhotos-will these pass?

I'm looking for feedback here because I'm new to submitting photos, and I have a few issues with the guidelines, but... whatever.

If I think like a reviewer, there may be one or two guidelines these are on the verge of violating, but can you help before I submit?

Thanks

Motive?

What exactly is JetPhoto's own motive? What are they trying to accomplish with their guidelines? It really feels like it's just about documenting aircraft because I don't see interesting or creative aircraft photos.

For example, in the guidelines documentation about cropping, there's a very good photo of an airliner landing or taking off. The photo is taken from the pilot's 10:00 or 11:00 position, and the frame is filled with the nose, some fuselage, etc. It's a great shot of a particular aircraft. As a user, I would like to see not only the typical, boring whole-aircraft image, but also some close-up images.

Best book to LEARN Technician content?

Nearly every post I've read about the technician license focuses on the best way to study or cram for the exam. What is the best book or video for really learning the math and science behind the test questions? I want to understand the material not just regurgitate it for the test.

Livery is only for airlines?

I'll resubmit my photos, but I'm a little surprised (maybe not since the rejection rate seems so high). My flying club's airplane got a new paint job. Very different from the original paint color and scheme, so when I saw there was a quick review for changes in airline livery, I thought this concept would apply to GA (PA28).

The aircraft in question is already in their database with the old paint job (and, frankly, in a photo that I think does not meet current qualifications, but I digress). I didn't check the change in livery box because that's for airlines. I checked "Other" and noted that this is a change in paint color and scheme.

The photo was rejected because it wasn't a change in "airline livery." Well, yeah, that's why A) I didn't note it as such, and B) I explained it in the comments box.

I guess I will resubmit since I think the photos are ok otherwise.

Was I wrong to approach it the way I did?

Recommended Logbook?

Is there a standard logbook for A&P time?

I spent a few weeks helping a local mechanic do annual and 100 hour work, and he said that he would be happy to enter my time in a logbook in case I wanted to pursue this further.

Anything in particular that I should buy to document my time?

Manual iPad photography?

I will be teaching an introductory photography course to kids this summer. I was supposed to have access to old DSLRs, but now I don't. I could get an iPad for each student though.

Is there any kind of app that will allow the kids to simulate changing shutter speed, aperture, and ISO?

I'd like them to see how, for example, taking a photo at 1/30 is different than taking the same photo at 1/1000; how depth of field changes with aperture; how ISO affects exposure settings and image quality; etc. Is there a way to do this or simulate it effectively with an iPad app?

▲ 3 r/AmericanHistory+1 crossposts

I'm looking for a "playlist" of movies that would give homeschooled teenagers a good overview of American history.

This is, naturally, a potentially long list, but I am curious about reading one or creating one based on responses here.

The movies need to be accessible (library or streaming-I don't want to hunt down an old VHS tape on eBay), and they need to provide a reasonably accurate picture of the historical events in the story.

One that comes to mind is the older HBO John Adams series, but would The Patriot also be worth a watch?

This is meant to provide a fun weekly movie night that will enrich their knowledge about the nation - and, yes, this is motivated by the 250th anniversary.

It would be cool to have a resource that included a short description of why the movie is good as history infotainment as well as where liberties were taken with the story or facts.

I am teaching a summer class for kids ages 10-13 in July. When I signed up to teach, I thought my budget would be $2500. It is now $500. The class is already full, so I really want to find the money.

Where are the best places to post links for a Go Fund Me or Donors Choose type request for donations? I see that most subreddits don't allow links for funding requests.

I'm trying to sell a building that started life as a Victorian house in the late 1800s. At some point in the last 50 years, it became commercial office space with first floor as one unit, and second floor as the other unit. A full renovation was done about 15 years ago. The place is beautiful.

An investor/contractor is looking at it, and our agent thinks he's going to ask for owner financing. Probably three years before a balloon payment.

The investor has a good track record in town, but I'm wary of the idea because I worry about a default or any other problem that could come up that I would not consider.

What kind of person or team do I need if I want to do owner financing, or should I avoid owner financing?
