This substitute today was something else...

After over two decades, I thought I had seen it all with substitutes.

Our school has a new rule this year about phones. Kids are to have them turned off and put away. They have been great about it – I’ve only had to confiscate two phones this year. Also – our discipline numbers are better, as kids aren’t organizing fights over text message during the day and such. No stupid bags to lock them up in or anything - we expect them to follow the rules and issue consequences when they don't. Making the parents come pick them up if they are confiscated is working. Anyway...

Today, two of my girls were very late to my class. When they got here, I asked them what was up, then confirmed their story later with the dean. They had a sub today in math class prior to my class. The sub thought they were hiding a phone in their laps, and told them to “open their legs so he could look.” These are two 12-year-old girls we are talking about. Even if they were 18-year-old seniors it wouldn’t be appropriate. Knowing these two, they probably did have their phones, but still – that is so wildly inappropriate.

So when they got to class and were telling me this, I see one of them is visibly upset. “Are you OK? Do you feel safe in here? Can I do anything for you?” She said she was OK, and the girls sat and did their work. I know the administration and guidance is on this, so I’ll let them deal with it. I don't care if those girls were hiding anything or what it might have been. How stupid can you be?

This clown is likely going to be fired, and deservedly so in my opinion. With that, imma have a drink – it’s been a long week and we have 8 school days left.

The best Teacher Appreciation Week gift. Two of my students are twins, and they have chickens. All of their teachers got a dozen fresh eggs today. Best gift ever in my 23 years. They are sweet girls too, I'm going to miss them next year.

It beats the hell out of the cereal and granola bar layout we got from admin. I wish I was kidding. Yesterday was doughnuts. Talk about a lack of imagination.

This boy this year and his friends are *feral.* I haven't had kids quite like this in 23 years.

Jimmy transferred in from another school halfway through the year. He transferred in with F's. Since then, he has earned a 32%. I reached out to Mom the other day about his behavior:

* Jimmy was suspended 10 days after picking up his classmate and attempting to slam him on his head and neck on the floor (Coded as a fight, even though I told the dean it was attempted murder in my view)

* Mom had no idea he was failing all of his classes (Yeah, right)

* Mom had no idea he had been suspended seven times this year (Every suspension requires the dean to speak to the parents and note that in the referral which they did)

* Mom says I have a problem with her son because I yelled at him for taking free time after he was done with is work. See above - he has a 32% and is NEVER done with his work. He goes home and lies.

I have another kid whose father says "he can't fail" because he has an IEP, and that if he does fail, it's my fault. Dad picks him up early every single day, if he is there at all, and the kid never does his work.

18 days can't get here soon enough. I'm so done this year.
