Trump-Backed Republicans Lose Florida Primaries as GOP Voters Reject Two Candidates

President Donald Trump's endorsement was not enough to save two Republican congressional candidates in Florida's primary elections Tuesday, while longtime Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz won her own hard-fought primary after a campaign marked by controversy over race and redistricting.

Republican Congressman Cory Mills lost his bid for a third term in Florida's 7th District to former television anchor Ryan Elijah. Mills has faced a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of se*ual misconduct and campaign finance violations, along with a separate Justice Department investigation into his finances. He has denied wrongdoing. Trump endorsed Mills in February but left him off a list of endorsements for Florida Republicans posted just before the election.

In a separate race for the seat being vacated by Congressman Byron Donalds, who won the GOP primary for governor the same night, Trump-backed candidate Catalina Lauf lost to businessman Jim Schwartzel. Trump endorsed Lauf only days before the election, and she could not close the gap in the crowded, ten-candidate Republican primary.

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a former chair of the Democratic National Committee, won her party's nomination in Florida's 20th Congressional District. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and state Republicans redrew her previous district into a Republican-leaning seat, prompting her to run in the 20th District, a seat long represented by Black Democrats.

Her decision drew frustration from Black Democratic leaders and rivals, including former Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who resigned earlier this year after being indicted on charges of stealing millions in Covid relief funds and also ran for the seat.

Wasserman Schultz called the new congressional maps a "brazenly illegal Republican gerrymander." She will face Republican nominee Brent Andersen and independent candidate Kedner Maxime in November.

A 19-year-old bride ended her two-year relationship on the spot after a guest from the groom's family struck her dog at the altar

At 4 in the morning in Fatehpur, India, 19-year-old Tanu Kesarwani was in the middle of her wedding ceremony when her dog began to bark. The animal was tied near the altar, but his noise became a target. A guest from the groom’s family, 25-year-old Sumit Kesarwani, struck the dog to force him into silence. That sparked an immediate confrontation. The wedding transformed into a chaotic brawl as both families began fighting. By the time police intervened to restore order, five people were injured. Tanu and Sumit had been together for two years and had already held a previous marriage at an Arya Samaj temple in Kanpur. Yet, the actions of the groom’s family changed everything in an instant. Tanu did not hesitate. She refused to move forward with the formal ceremony, returned her jewellery, and ended the relationship on the spot. It is a striking decision that forces us to look past the venue and the dress. As Tanu noted, anyone who does not respect an animal does not respect anyone.

Fourteen days alone, and nobody came for her

This 40-year-old parrot waited by herself in an empty house, weak and struggling to eat or drink, with no idea her person wasn't coming back. Her owner had passed away, leaving her behind with no one checking in. Rescuers didn't even know she existed until someone finally reached out on her behalf. When they broke through and lifted her out of that cage, she could barely stand. Two weeks of holding on by herself had drained nearly everything she had left. Now she's in the hands of a team determined to help her heal, with a padded enclosure, gentle warmth, and someone checking on her every single day. Her recovery is slow, but she's not alone anymore, and this time, someone's staying.
