How do you defend against the “why draw the line there?” argument?
It’s easy to say “I don’t want to hurt animals”, but meat eaters will just say that we hurt animals too by simply existing. We can come back and say only as far as practicable and possible, but if that were completely true we’d be living in huts and growing our own food or whatever (crop deaths are a non-issue because again, impracticable, but things like overeating, certain products like avocados, pet food, etc).
The only real response I have to them is that Tu Quoque (saying “well you do X too on a smaller scale so I don’t have to stop doing X on a large one”) is not a valid defense, but then we end up arguing over whether my use of streaming services, buying cat food, and having a front lawn is as bad as their use of animal products and it starts to become a giant mess of “look everyone draws the line somewhere, you just happen to dislike consuming animal products, meanwhile I don’t drive, so if you drive you’re worse than me” etc.
