Agility and Dexterity

I just read that Pathfinder allows for the possibility of splitting Dexterity into two characteristics: Dexterity and Agility (AC, Stealth, Athletics, Dexterity Saving Throws). How feasible would it be to implement this change in various editions of D and D? This would, I suppose, just be an additional characteristic.

Balanced and Complex Fantasy and Science Fiction RPGs

There are really two questions at play here. 1) Which games are the most balanced, i.e. which games make the character options—usually classes—as comparable to one another without sacrificing thematic appeal, and without making them all broken in the process (if everyone can end a fight with one word, you have balance in one sense but not the other)? Which games allow for the greatest degree of character customization and reward your thinking about your build for a long time?

Ideally a game would be both balanced and deep (and tactical!)—but not all good games are. And let me stress: homogenization is not the same thing as balance! I love distinct classes.

I am happy to receive whatever suggestions you have; games about which I know something include the later editions of D and D—starting with 3.5–Pathfinder, Starfinder, 13th Age, Mythras, Mage: The Awakening, Mutants and Masterminds, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, FFG Star Wars, Worlds and Stars Without Number. But I don’t know most of these well, so feel free to explain why you like them if they come to mind.

Some notes which may be helpful:

The martial-caster (or the equivalent) debate is relevant here.

I tend to like games with more skills and abilities—why don’t more RPGs distinguish between Dexterity and Agility or proficiency to hit and proficiency to deal damage—but I also like simpler systems.

ADDITION: I should make this clear. I do not want a perfectly balanced game. But I do want a game in which the “broken” options are nonexistent or not especially prevalent (at least at the “strong” level of play rather than the “competitive” one if we make an analogy to games such as Magic) and one in which class pets are distinct. If something is just stronger than other options because what it does is very powerful, that can be fine. We are in a worse position if a certain class does everything better than anything something else. In general, however, if the non-ridiculously optimized builds in a game are interesting and strong, that is reason enough for you to recommend that game.

Aegis Archetypes

I found an excellent old handbook from 2012 on the class, but it doesn’t have any comments on certain archetypes, such as Mecha Sentinal. Is there a more current guide I can review? If not, some general thoughts on all the archetypes of the class would be helpful.

New to the Game: Which Edition Should I Play?

I tend to like systems which allow for a lot of character customization but are also reasonably well-balanced. What are the major differences between the editions? What are the major differences between the editions? I tend to like combat-focused classes, though magic-users are also fun (can I play as Iron-man)?

What Team Should I Support?

I have never watched much football before. Which team should I support? I prefer defensive and possession-based play. For context, my favorite basketball team is the Spurs and my favorite NFL team is the Patriots. I care about winning, but will never shift allegiance once I’ve decided on a team. So I would probably prefer to support a team with a history of winning that is good now, but if that team performs poorly, I will not abandon it.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Clubs

I have never watched seriously. What are the main characteristics of the five major leagues? What are some of the styles of play manifested by teams in each league? I want to choose a team to support.

First PC

So people have given me helpful responses to previous writings and I now have a better sense of price.

I want to buy my first PC in order to play some older RTS games (StarCraft II, Dawn of War). I’d also like to use this as a general work device. The price range is $300-$1500; ideally, I don’t want something too large. I realize that more money may be required after receiving many useful replies to earlier questions. Any advice is appreciated! If the range of quality is from, “bad and cheap” to “good—but cheap” to “not too expensive and good” to “good” to “great” to “excellent” to “professional,” I guess I would like something that doesn’t make one think I seriously compromised basic quality for prize. As I said, size is very important to me—I don’t want something too big. I am buying from the U.S.

I should say that I will never play ant narrative games or non strategy games (non RTS or turn-based games).

I apologize for the similarity to my previous post, but I wanted to add some more information in a new location.

First Desktop

I want to play some older RTS games (Dawn of War, StarCraft II). What sort of desktop do I want? Will a Dell Tower work? I don’t know anything about computers—what should I look for when evaluating choices? The price range is $300-$700, although I could be persuaded to buy something more expensive if it is special. I really do not want something too big; the size of the actual box should not be large if at all possible; but I do want a good quality product, not a product which makes one think, “that is good—for a budget.”

Finger Strength and Flexibility

Hello,

I recently decided to start playing RTS games (StarCraft II) and have quickly learned that my finger strength and flexibility are sorely lacking. (This video shows the kinds of motions required: https://youtu.be/glSiSoAounY?si=-8qyiiZd4WWP62AE.) For example, I type with my index fingers only, and you need to be able to press shift and control and shift with just your pinky, and control plus a number with your pinky and fourth or third finger. When I try to type with all fingers, I have difficulty finding the third, fourth, and pinky fingers.

What can I do to improve finger strength and flexibility? I would like a detailed daily routine of exercises. How can I learn to move my fingers as demonstrated at 4:21 in this video: https://youtu.be/RtHZPZM5gtU?si=5ZH6iLOePC5oxKhK.

I am twenty-four, male, 6’0, in good health, do not smoke or take medication, and do not have adverse medical history.

Thank you!

Fingers and Difficulty

I have a very difficult time using all my fingers. I type with index fingers and my other fingers are weak. In particular, it is difficult and painful for me to press control with my pinky and a number key with a different finger. What can I do to improve my typing for Star Craft? This may sound odd, but if I could see videos of how people use their fingers and images indicating which fingers cover which keys, that would be very helpful.

Typing

I realized there is a major issue that I face as a beginner. I type with my two index fingers and do not feel comfortable at all using more fingers. How do I train so that I can overcome this limitation and play Star Craft successfully? Are there images which associate fingers with certain keys that I can look at?

Terran Build Orders

I just started playing. It would be useful if I could see some of the basic build orders in a list with some analysis.

What is the precise timing of generating workers?

Final Questions (for now)

I have been asking a lot of questions; here are the last few for a while.

  1. Is there a list of key manipulations I can look at? By “key manipulations,” I mean things such as how to move and army and also transform tanks, how to use shift to give multiple orders, etc.
  2. How do I learn about macro cycle? How do I develop a feel for when to check on building types and their development?
  3. What tricks should I know (moving the rally point of the first worker farther away so that it can build more quickly, for instance)?
  4. Which of Pig’s Terran’s guides is better for a defensive play style?
  5. How does production work if I use control groups? If I train marines with four barracks, how are the troops distributed?
