Banh Mi

So I have this obsession with finding the best, or my favorite vegan banh mi in NYC. Banh mi Sandwiches are my favorite sandwich type around.

I’ve been just about everywhere in Manhattan so far, including the all vegan Vietnamese spot. And most have been great.

This one isn’t from an all vegan restaurant but damn…if it isn’t the best one in Manhattan I don’t know which one is.

V-Nam Cafe on 1st Avenue. Soy Protein Banh Mi, ordered with no mayo.

I wanted to like the Banh mi sandwiches from the all vegan places more but this one is just special. I think they let the soy protein marinade for a very long time. It’s like a spicy BBQ flavoring and they put a lot of it on the sandwich. Great flavor and texture. Bread is crisp on the outside, vegetables are fresh tasting. 10/10

I’m upselling this. Need this place to stay busy so I can buy this forever.

Favorites so far

Go Brewing - Watermelon Wheat - Favorite so far. Can drink 100 of these. Watermelon tastes like actual watermelon, and I’m biased since that’s my favorite fruit. Great after a long day of work. Perfect amount of sweetness, solid aftertaste. Just a perfect balance of sweet and refreshing. Store near me ran out because I kept buying them.

Go Brewing - Pineapple Yuzu - Undeniable quality, great flavors. Only 2nd place because I prefer watermelon and can find Pineapple too sweet in general after 2 or 3. The Yuzu does balance out the pineapple sweetness.

Chouffe - Belgian Near Brew - This one just is a bit on the expensive side. But found myself wishing there was more. I killed the bottle in like 2 sips. I love Belgian style beer, and that sort of beer I think lends well to the non-alcoholic market due to the flavor undertones. Notes of orange peel you get from Belgian style pop more without the alcohol. I generally prefer the fruit flavored / sour stuff when doing non alcoholic. This is my favorite more traditional beer in non alcoholic so far. Just expensive next to the rest of these.

Go Brewing - Salty AF Chelada - If you want to drink nonstop this one works well. But for the same reason I didn’t enjoy as much as my top 2 from Go Brewing. It’s no doubt very high quality, and if you want citrus flavor but not too much of it, it’s very great. I love this one, but during a session of different flavors I end up preferring the more balanced flavor of the Watermelon. If I only had this one though I’d still be very happy.

Athletic - Lime & Salt - I really love this one. My favorite from Athletic so far. I can drink this one nonstop as well. The lime really pops and the salt balances out the lime really well. It’s very very refreshing.

Athletic - Lemon Radler - Delicious and has more sweetness than the lime. I do think if it had a little saltiness it would be as refreshing as the lime. But if you prefer a little more sweet, and a sweet/ almost savory flavor that lasts long, you may prefer this one to the lime. They both pop but the lime flavor doesn’t linger as long as the lemon. Up to preference and I love both.

Athletic - Paloma - An awesome I think limited edition flavor. I hope it sticks around and that the price drops. At stores near me it’s $4.79 a can, and even at Trader Joe’s- they only carry 4 packs and they cost as much as a 6 pack of the Lemon Radler/ Lime & Salt. There is a bitterness in the aftertaste that some may not enjoy, but it’s not usual for grapefruit- so some may love that. But it’s nonetheless very refreshing, and I’d still buy more if the price came down.

Guinness - Guinness 0 - Guinness has always been my favorite big brand beer. Can’t say much else. It reminds me of an actual Guinness, though like some of the other beers I think without the alcohol the flavor pops more. If I can only get this I’m still very happy.

Flvr - Chocolate dark brew - I found this one interesting. It reminds me of a sparkling Yoo-hoo but healthy. I enjoy dark chocolate a lot, and I can’t get along well with sugary drink. This is like chocolate minus sweet, while still tasting very nice. Would prefer it during cooler seasons. So far it’s the only flavor from this brand I’ve enjoyed. I’ve found the rest of their lineup to not be as good as Athletic and Go Brewing, but more expensive.

Recommendations welcome !

Bad Cat Mod Shop Hot Cat 50

This amp looks super promising. I was originally looking to get a Friedman Plex but after hearing the demos I’m torn.

Has anyone played one? Does anyone here own one ?

Cleans and high gain sound great in demos. But can it do the Variac’d Plexi thing. Wondering if this can do everything the Plex does, but with reverb, clean and effects loop on a top.

Also has anyone played one live? How well does it cut? And is the feel dynamic/ touch sensitive?

Oldschool quality

Hey everyone,

I’m a lover of cigars, have tried many great ones. Various Padron, authentic Cohiba/ Partagas Lusitania, Liga Privada etc. I have a friend who is in his 70s, who I’m trying to find a cigar he would actually like. I’ve smoked many of the ones mentioned with him and several more. We went to Davidoff and purchased some expensive ones. Everything he’s had recently he says all suck next to cigars from the 80s and prior. He’s smoked with Zino Davidoff back in the 70s. Also says even a $5 Te Amo Mexican cigar from the 80s is vastly superior to the expensive ones we have tried.

I’m looking to find something that will surprise him. He says cigars back then used to taste better as they burned. I enjoy the cigars I smoke, he tells me I just don’t know what I’m missing lol. Is there something you guys can recommend me? Willing to order online. I’m looking at the Fabrica005 website, is this a good place to start ? We have tried nearly every local cigar shop in NYC as well as some in PA and NJ. Would love some recommendations.

Is he right ? Or are his tastebuds fried? Help me shut this guy up lol

Cheers,
Rob

Show injuries

This should be fun. What are your best, I mean worst injuries from hardcore shows?

I’ll start.

  1. Tossed into the PA and my thumb got pushed in when I tried to block my head from hitting it. Permanently have limited range of motion. Sick of it All show.

  2. Back fist to the eye, eyelid turned inside out. Kept signing along and slamming with a leaking eye. Breakdown show.

  3. Kick in between the legs, it swelled up like the eggplant emoji. Fury of V show.

  4. Several kicks to the face, cut between the eyes. Neck whiplash and concussion. Youth of Today.

  5. Fell from the stage straight onto the back of my head. Such a bad concussion I was scared to go to sleep because everything was spinning and hearing was off. Dillinger Escape Plan.

*bonus* Circle pit…was going in a circle and a drunk fat guy was going the opposite way. His belly collided with my head so hard my neck got messed up. He was laying flat on his back after, and people were dancing in circles around him. He was pulled out of the venue. Glassjaw

From when I was fostering a baby Ornate. Wanted to give him privacy but still allow him to peak out of his enclosure. Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti fulfilled the task.

Gloves

Thought it would be cool to have sort of a glove love thread. Share your favorite 16oz gloves.

  1. BoxeoTM - my favorite all around glove. Protective with pop. Good for sparring, good fit for a perfect fist, smooth liner.

  2. Custom Salvador HH - Metallic, liner not as smooth as BoxeoTM but has a great fit. Took forever to ship but worth the wait. Use for light sparring, not much else since the metallic finish flakes off lol.

  3. Classics Mexicombate - tight, compact fit. Has a long break in period. I can see these being good for tech sparring since the profile is so small. Also good for if you want to use 16oz on the bag and mitts.

Cheers
- Rob
