Wouldn't free Open Source software be mandatory in Galaxy wide expansion?

Wouldn't free Open Source software be mandatory in Galaxy wide expansion?

I was thinking about Space Westerners like my favorite, Lone Star Planet. The idea of people expanding out into space akin to westward expansion, people expecting to live "Off the grid" and away from large population centers on the frontier of space, Wouldn't free Open Source software be mandatory?

To have proprietary software that can lock you out of features or the whole thing because you don't have a connection to a server or the license expires or worse it bricks itself cause you modified it to fit your needs better does not seem viable for living on the frontier.

Even to get a licensed technician out there could take months or years depending on how easy it is to get there if one will be sent at all.

If an irrigation system has to have an OS, would not something like Linux mint or other versions be needed? It runs on older hardware and is not demanding. You can copy and paste a whole OS onto a flashdrive and even go as far as to have a live OS (Runs off the USB) so a farm hand can go from machine to machine and use the USB like a key.

an Asteroid mining operation would not want to pay out some licensing fee to a company that provides no support on a software glitch when they can train their own staff on how to troubleshoot the problem.

Even when it comes to entertainment, A Saloon could have its music playlist running off a built in music player in linux. Heck have an Arcade setup with all the games playable on a single drive.

In terms of education, the school house teacher could use the same PDFs for text books every year and not pay an arm and a legs for the latest edition. The Library or book stores just has ebooks that anyone can get onto their tablets or PCs and not have the fear that if the book will be deleted from their collection.

All this came to mind as a future proofing of science fiction and that i have not really seen an science fiction work tackle this kind of world building. Though knowing science fiction or the real world, companies will try to convince people that their product is better then the free software despite all the downsides.

So yeah Wouldn't free Open Source software be mandatory in Galaxy wide expansion if not for practical reasons then convivence?

Has anyone played the Badab war out in the Rogue Trader era rules?

I own PDFs of the 1st edition rules but has anyone played the conflict out with the rules at the time. I would like to play one of the chapters like the Tiger Claws or Raptors and learn how 40k was in the 1st edition days. Is it fun and worth the time?

Any Examples of fictional stories about real people while they were alive in the Public Domain?

I watched a cartoon from the 90s called The Legend of Calamity Jane. An episode with Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (Wife of FDR) as a child brings stories about her adventures and life. I looked it up to learn Calamity Jane was a real person and that the stories brought up were the deadwood dick dime novels that have Calamity Jane as a character.

I looked at the dates and Jane was alive at the time the novels came out. Completely fictious and not based in reality. Are there other examples of this thing happening in the public domain? People writing fanfiction of living people, making up stories about their life and turning a profit from it?

The Show is kinda guilty of hiding it's LGBTQ+ story behind social media/ the 11th hour

The ending plays "Isn't she lovely" to suggest that Jax is a trans woman but does not outright say it in the text of the show. It was later stated on GW's social media. The show is kinda guilty of hiding it's LGBTQ+ story. For years many had complained about TV Shows and movies not showing their LGBTQ+ cast on screen until the end or after on social media.

One of the shows guilty was Legend of Korra. In the last 20 seconds of the show, it shows that Korra and Asami are dating. To people watching, it came out of nowhere and felt like a cheap move for brownie points.

More recently, the creator behind Star Vs. The Forces of Evil more or less confirmed that Marco is BI by them replying to fan art.

Many have called this "Hiding your Gays". For years, Hollywood and media networks had a ban on LGBTQ+ storylines as they would be called not for kids, inappropriate, or a financial risk. When they were shown it was typically in a negative light or used as an insult.

Things started to change when same sex marriage was legal in the US. Shows like Steven Universe & She-ra (2018) to some extent were able to show off more of these themes openly though SU had it's own issues with that. As of late though, that has shifted, so things are less likely to show it off in the text of the work.

Indie works like animation was suppose to be the light in the darkness that is the business of entertainment. Being indie means you don't have to pull punches and can be free to show LGBTQ+ characters without fear of backlash for the whole length of the story. Hazbin Hotel has been that way since the time it was just a web comic.

Jax having the suggestion of being trans in text and the confirmation on SM is what was done in the old days that people got upset about. I'm one that thinks external media having valuable information is fine but not when it comes to stuff like this.

Imagine in 20-30 years from now, people will come across Digital Circus and think that it was just a song used in a bitter-sweet moment. The social media accounts could be gone in that time and leave future generations without the full context. For me, I didn't think Jax was trans for moment cause I viewed it more as a struggle to define his manhood, is he the jokester or is he the responsible one. Going over how they harmed their mother and it shaking his understanding of what it means to be a man, be abusive like his father or take the harsh words of a loved one and let it go.

I'm not saying everything needs to be spelled out, but when it comes to things like LGBTQ+ storylines, its more likely then not to be made ambiguous. Like MLP FIM, Rainbow Dash & Applejack's relationship is "Left open for interpretation" is just a cop out to avoid ruffling feathers.

With GW dropping the show, there is no chance at this point at the moment to make things clear in text, leaving everything to be Left open for interpretation by the text of the story. Such storytelling is right out of the corporate playbook and indie animation is suppose to be better then that.

Idea for a WWTA One-Shot. Would it be lore accurate?

An O'Tolley's location is being built on a Forrest edge a little to close for comfort to a Garou den. To ensure their home is left undiscovered, the pack apply to work at O'Tolley's. 4 players would be needed (3 if one is a DM PC). P1. handles the front counter, P2. Is the cook, P3. is deals with the drive through, and P4. is monitoring the security cameras and also the janitor.

The day manager on staff is a sweet lady but goes on and on about there being talking Rat people in the woods. She has a bunch of trinkets she says can reveal the Rat people. All but one is a real magical item and the players have to avoid her when it's out or get rid of it somehow to prevent her from finding out who they really are.

The night manager is a Retired Army Ranger and he runs the store like a military base. When he arrives, the players see on the hood of his F1-50 is a logo for a major hunter organization. The players have to avoid long periods with him as he could smell they are not human. He would pull one aside to tell war stories that would either be fake, exaggerations, or adlib versions of his hunts.

The players would need to avoid showing their werewolf side while dealing with the normal issues of fast food. Rude Customers, Equipment Breakdowns, Teenagers, and corporate nonsense.

Would this One-shot be lore accurate or what would I need to change and where?

What we should all say when we adapt public domain stories and pass them off as our own

This was from an episode of Futurama. The Borax Kid replaces Buffalo Bill's Short Stories with himself. As someone that likes efficiency in writing and loves the public domain, you are legally allowed to do this. So take something off Project Gutenberg, edit the names and publish.

While I would remix the story and add my own flavor, people can and have done this.

What is the real Matilda like?

From what we've seen before, Matilda is a calm and well spoken person but in the recent chapter she's quirky and manic. She says she hates language but then when it's a serious moment, she's speaks in a normal tone, no gimmicks. Is she playing a game and wants to have fun being a quirky, manic wolf girl or is she putting on a hard act being serious. From what Amanda said about her, was what she told truthful or a rehearsed line?

Thoughts on publishing a short story collection?

I've been taking advantage of my free time after college to try and write a book but as soon as a I start getting into it I come up with something else, Stop, write that and repeat.

I've listened to Public Domain short story collections from Librivox and thought making a short story collection would be a great start as I can put my ideas out there from Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Each story would not be a huge commitment and can hit the story beats I want. Over time completing the story while giving the reader variety.

Would this be the best path and are their examples of writers on here that have done the same?

What Fantasy writers say when they copy religious stories

I like the Public Domain, and religious stories are Public Domain. Fantasy writers take stories, concepts, and characters and remix them. Like I don't believe in X religion but the stories sound great let me make it better. Like Noah's ark but in space. Even DOOM was made by atheists, they just thought fighting demons off with a shot gun was cool.

Is there any faction that deals in Aquatic warfare?

I've watched a few videos about Kitbashing Quar and would like to get into it. From the lore or any background info, are there any Quar that deal in Aquatic warfare. Those that use Aquatic camo for swampy jungles or combat on the coast. Or going as far as submarine and torpedo combat?

Thoughts on limited animation

I'm already finishing a visual audio log with very limited animation (visual emotion change on a photo) but I'm not sure it counts as Indie Animation given its 99% power point slides with audio attached. I was inspired to make it based on Hunter: The Parenting audio logs. Next i want to move on to something a bit bigger but I'm 1 person with little animation experience and only open source/free software with a very very limited budget.

Years ago I watched Epithet Erased and loved the use of moving PNGs for animation. The characters came off as more dynamic and expressive in comparison to industry animation. Studio Trigger in the past with shows like Ninja Slayer from Animation and Kill La Kill used PNG animation for moments of comedy. More recently I found out about an animation of the Hobbit from the 1960s that used Limited animation to 1. Save on the budget & 2. Fulfill a contract before losing the rights. Thought the film has bad reviews for its IP, I thought it was good. If your Story is good limited animation either doesn't hurt or can make it better.

I've been making Pixel art for a few weeks and thought about making a limited animation work to tell the stories I want told. Would you consider a work like that even at the speed of a power point slide to be Indie Animation or not?

Pulp is the old school term for "Slop" and it's funny

As of late, people have been calling media "slop". "Disney Slop", "Filoni Slop", "Indie Slop", "Art Slop". Claiming that the work is just low effort mindless entertainment. Weird tales & Amazing Stories are 2 among several magazines containing speculative fiction from Fantasy and Science Fiction. From the time these were seen as low effort mindless entertainment made for simple consumption. The reason these magazines got the label "Pulp" is due to publishing houses using the cheapest and thinnest paper on the market. The woks inside didn't get high praise from mainstream publishing houses because it was thought to have nothing of value that anyone would get attached to but given what we know now it was short sighted.

To boot, a lot of these magazines didn't bother to renew the copyright of the published material, lapsing into the Public Domain because either they simply forgot, wasn't worth the money, or the company was defunct letting more people rework these stories and characters into something else.

The works of HP Lovecraft gave the world his mind bending stories that would be a staple in horror like Cthulhu today because of so many would remake, adapt, and repurpose elements for their own thing . or the architype of the hardened action hero like Conan the Barbarian being like the John Rambo of the day. When it comes to science fiction, it set the stage for stuff like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Warhammer 40K. It would even combine genres that we consider normal today like Science Fiction Westerns through stuff like Lone Star Planet.

The label of Slop in the future could come around to be a good thing in the future. Works that are accused of being low effort can inspire future creators to make milestone works of art if not be milestones themselves. Vivienne Medrano being the Indie darling (or boogey man) was inspired by Public Domain works of Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno, The Lesser Key of Solomon, and Gnostic texts filtered through a edge lord "Slop" deviant art lens to become smash hits that everyone talks about or has seen a little of.

Bloodborne is more or less Lovecraft meets Dark Souls in the Victorian Era. Concepts like the Werewolf being the result of people drinking the blood of Lovecraftian Outer Gods called The Old Ones is a remix of his works. Bloodborne to this day is seen as one of the best games to play.

[Very Rare Meta Trope] Fanfiction so good it becomes canon

[Not the copyright clamed means it's canon Trope] The only few example I know of is the Astartes animation from a few years ago. Syama Pedersen made the animation in his spare time to show off his passion for Warhammer 40K with his Homebrew chapter in animation. Overtime Games Workshop the owners of Warhammer 40K saw the traction his fanfiction was getting and how people were getting into the hobby because the animation looked good.

GW had animations for 40K but it was trash in comparison to what Syama did with consumer level software and equipment on a shoe string budget over professional hardware with a successful company's deep pockets.

GW eventually tracked him down and more less told him to hand over the Astartes animation and sign a contract that he'd make animations for them. Afterword the animation was placed on Warhammer+ and his homebrew chapter had been placed in official products with an Astartes 2 being made.

Lancelot - King Arthur Folklore: The character was written by the French poet Chrétien de Troyes. Lancelot was more or less his OC self insert fanfiction of King Arthur Folklore from the older English and Welsh versions of the stories. Lancelot's story Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart became so popular that it merged with King Arthur Folklore in retellings. Today you cant have a King Arthur story without Lancelot being somewhere nearby as if he's apart of the original cast like Elmo in sesame Street

Can Formatting of a Public Domain Film or Show be copyrighted?

I randomly was watching a trailer for Loki episode 2 by Rebel Taxi and he said he's making a "Pan and Scan" VHS copy of the 1st episode. It got me thinking about Formatting of a Public Domain Film or Show and can it be copyrighted. I know film restorations can be but what of video framing. If one takes the film All Quiet on the Western Front or Metropolis and makes a "Pan and Scan" or widescreen version, can that be copyrighted?

How a conversation goes when I tell people to read the Star Wars Novels

This is the reaction I get online when I tell people that glorify the EU novels to read the new novels when they question the Story gaps in the Sequel Trilogy and the rest of the Disney Era.

Like asking how the New Republic let the 1st order happen, I tell them to read the novels. Or more recently people asking how is it possible to have trained non-Jedi/Sith force users in the upcoming starfighter film, when the high republic novels and comics showed the Convocation of the Force that featured.... trained non-Jedi/Sith force users.

Just Finished Halo Renegades 8.5/10

i'm new to the Halo IP and understand very little outside of fan works to I got this Audio Book of Halo Renegades. It was very good and I have a better understanding of the Halo story. Fallout like Public Domain works?

Just finished the short story The courts of Jamshyd by Robert F. Young. The world is described as having been full of life until man turned it into dust. Saying the characters live near Ruins full of buildings. This description of the world sounds like the Fallout wasteland. Any other PD works that has this type of post nuclear war setting?

How do I make a Star Wars opening Crawl in openshot or other free software?

I've been working in Open Shot for a few months now with basic still frame editing. I want to be able to do more and make Parodies of stuff. Is there a way to make a Star Wars opening Crawl natively in Open Shot or any other free software. I've tried looking but everything came up as either paid software or something so old that my PC cant run it without crashing like Movie maker 2.6 for example.
