To generalize quite a bit: elderly women had it straightened or blow-dried, but black elder women always keep their hair straightened and tied back. Middle-aged women either had their hair straightened or braided, sometimes use a cheap looking wig. But young women, teenagers, and children all wore their hair natural, often quite long. And there was none of that frizzy unkempt hair; it was all perfectly cared. There was one young woman with an insane ginger afro. A huge contrast to just a few years ago, when only the occasional brave soul wore an afro, and wavy hair was seen only on those who clearly didn't care much about their appearance—the tomboys.

The book is Coisa de rico: A vida dos endinheirados brasileiros (Rich Person’s Thing: The Lives of Wealthy Brazilians), written by sociologist Michel Alcoforado, in which he describes the experience of researching the lives of the Brazilian elite.

The scene is as follows: he is in Geneva, interviewing a wealthy, middle-aged Brazilian woman who lives there. They had just finished lunch, and she invited him to join her for the next part of her day.
