Behringer Pro 800 advice: seriously considering getting this (along with 3U rack ears). I’d be very interested to hear how other Pro 800 owners have found this synth.

I’ve been finding my Rode NT-1 5th gen very harsh and bright on podcasts. I then found an old Oktava MK-319 and A/B tested them. The Oktava sounds so much more rich and more low end. However I have no other condenser mic to compare it to. Anyone here in this kind of situation?

I’m also keen on knowing if anyone has the Oktava MK-319 and how they rate it? I hadn’t used mine for around 6 years and bought it around 20 years ago.

My recording studio/podcast/YouTubing space. Wide angle shot - it’s a small space!

Gear:
Roland RD2000EX stage piano
Arturia Minifreak synth
Moog Subsequent 25 synth
Roland SH-01 Gaia synth
NI Kontrol 61S Mk3 controller keyboard
Roland TR-8S drum machine
Tascam Model 16 mixer
Sony ZV-10 camera
Neewer lighting & stand
Rode NT-1A for podcast vocal
Oktava MK-319 for lead vocal
Behringer Virtualiser 3D outboard fx
Alesis Quadraverb GT outboard fx
IConnectivity MioXL MIDI interface
MacBook Pro deliberately not pictured so as not to offend DAWless Reddit snark(!)
Monitoring: Genelec 8020Ds (wide angle shot, other monitor out of shot equidistant L/R to chair)
Grenadier alto saxophone 🎷 (couldn’t get it in pic)

How Modern Love changed so much for Bowie. Here’s a piano breakdown showing how the song works

u/DannyTheGekko — 9 days ago

Question for dawless purists…

My setup (Minifreak, Roland RD2000EX, Moog Sub25, TR8S, Kontrol S61 with V-Collection and Gaia SH-01) are all connected with a MioXL MIDI interface. The audio is via the Tascam Model 16 (also running aux sends to an Alesis Quadraverb GT and Behringer Virtualiser).
I love the immediacy of one-off improvisation jams. I have found that using a MacBook which also controls the V-Collection on it and runs live on 4/8/12/16 bar empty loops to trigger the gear live is easier and more effective than any hardware sequencer (eg Keystep Pro).
I also don’t like the Digitakt, besides which it is insufficient in its sequencing power. You could call it a hybrid setup then. And if I’m not actually recording on Logic but it’s just the clock running live loops, this still brings the spontaneity of a DAWless jam. Anyway, was interested in what this community thought of similar hybrid setups - and any suggestions.
Discussion please; no Reddit snark, or ‘just make music, that’s all that counts, man!’ responses!

I’m obsessed with the song My Computer. I’m also fascinated by Prince’s creative partnership with Kate Bush

I think My Computer was inspired by Kate’s Deeper Understanding from her superb album The Sensual World. Yet there’s no documented evidence of this causal track link. I know Kate contributed vocals to this underestimated track off Emancipation.
My Computer is moving as well as having a wonderful Rhodes riff. Any more info on the background to how this collaboration would be appreciated? I feel that, with more production, this could have been a great single. It presages the internet in a beautiful way. And to find ‘funny and bright’ people on the internet these days isn’t easy!
Also Kate and Prince collaborated on ‘Why Should I Love You?’ off The Red Shoes. They clearly admired eachother. I cannot think of two more talented solo artists. Save perhaps Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and David Bowie.
The thought of both in the studio riffing off eachother’s talent is basically a creative wet dream 😅.

There is something about the digitalisation of Countdown To Ecstasy that suits it more than the vinyl analog. I’ve A/B tested them and definitely prefer the former. Feel free to disagree!

Also I’d read that Donald hated the Katy Lied production due to the DBX tape noise reduction system being off. So he must also have preferred the CD remaster of that too.

Any other of you face this dilemma? I need to upgrade to a digital mixer. I’m running out of line inputs on my Tascam Model 16 for my dawless/hybrid setup. Too many synths, samplers, drum machines, outboard aux returns and mics all of which constantly in use. I also podcast so need preset mixes…

However the spend increase is big. I’m looking at three options: the Behringer Wing Compact, the Midas M32R Live and the Allen & Heath SQ5. I’d be interested in hearing from anyone here who’s had to make that upgrade. This is for studio and not live use. Thanks for your time.

Is there another solution? The Dark Side of a keyboard and mouse stand dilemma. Floyd be damned. And no, my legs won’t fit under a slideable keyboard tray. Been there and, painfully, done that!

All other reachable and playable gear in monitor reflection, which also shows the big Velux windows which certainly couldn’t mount a suspended monitor. No other wall available in this small space, also used for piano & music theory podcasting.

Listening again to Your Gold Teeth II - again. Jeff Porcaro’s drumming is phenomenal on this track. Swings perfectly, just ahead of the beat. What a guy to have in the studio.

I’ve read DF saying that he was such a great motivator, full of energy.

On not finishing songs: isn’t the fun just getting things talking to eachother - efficiently? Isn’t it exploring the possibilities of the kit you already have?

This in itself is as valuable as an endless remix or aimless DAWless jam (that few realistically will listen to in an age of free, non gate-kept content). As a career pianist, the technical aspect has always been a parallel source of endless learning that started with my JX-3P (PG1000 programmer), Fostex A8 and Akai S900 back in 1983. The scene has NEVER been more vibrant than it is now.

Phenomenal songcraft. Amazing piano playing too. Listening to it makes me all the more in awe.

A Keystep Pro to complement my MPC One?

I’m considering adding a Keystep Pro to my setup, mainly because MPC One Song mode is so fiddly and there’s a spontaneity to track chaining on the KSP that’s immediate and has a nice looper workflow.
Also I’m making 4 min songs with intro, verse, chorus etc - then pulling some of that arrangement into Logic later.
However on the MPC-plus side, I still love the sampling and drums on the One. I’m wondering if any others of you have been in a similar dilemma - either creatively, technically or both.

An updated Keystep Pro?

Anybody heard any rumours of a souped-up Arturia KSP with more parallel sequencers and larger keys?
