Mrs. Chippy (circa 1914)
Was a ship carpenter's cat. 'Chippy' was slang for carpenter and Mrs. Chippy was in fact a boy cat.
He accompanied the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Ernest Shackleton. Their ship, The Endurance, got stuck in the pack ice and crushed. When the crew abandoned the boat for the frozen surface of the ocean, Shackleton ordered all dogs and Mrs. Chippy shot (for survival purposes).
His bronze sculpture is on the grave of the carpenter, Henry McNish.
